The average fuel economy of new vehicles sold in April 2016 dropped slightly to 25.2 mpg.
March 2016 reported a figure of 25.3 mpg, according to researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. The decline likely comes as a result of increased market share of pickup trucks and SUVs. Compared to its peak in August 2014, fuel economy is down 0.6 mpg but is still up 5.1 mpg since October 2007, which is when Sivak and Schoettle first started monitoring the data.
The average sales-weighted fuel economy is calculated based on monthly sales of individual models of light-duty vehicles that include cars, SUVs, vans and pickup trucks along with the combined city/highway fuel economy ratings published in the EPA Fuel Economy Guide.
