Volkswagen has released footage of its new Golf GTI Clubsport S breaking the front-wheel drive Nurburgring lap record.
The car managed to lap the famous German race track in 7:49.21, just a little over a second faster than the Honda Civic Type R that previously held the record. Behind the wheel for Volkswagen was touring car driver Benny Leuchter.
We see Leuchter hit about 150 mph on the straight aways in the video, while the car pulls up to 1.5 G in the corners and under braking.
Built to celebrate the VW GTI’s 40th anniversary, only 400 Golf Clubsport S models will leave the factory. Each one has been stripped down to the bare essentials needed to be a great track car, while 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque are on tap, sending this 2,833 lb car rocketing up to speed.
