BMW Recalls 189K SUVs to Reinforce Child Seat Anchors

BMW is recalling about 189,000 X3 and X4 models in the U.S. over an issue with the child seat anchors.

According to BMW, certain European-style child seats can damage the anchor bars meant to secure the seats. This is less of a risk in the U.S., as nearly all child seats sold here feature a flexible Latch connector, which negates the problem.

Still, dealers will weld a reinforcing bracket to the lower anchor bars to make sure that damage does not occur.

The problem affects the 2011-2017 BMW X3 and the 2015-2017 X4. BMW first discovered the issue when a European customer reported the damage back in March of 2016.

The recall is expected to begin in the U.S. on July 12.
