Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed when pinned under his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles now says it will conduct an inquiry into the death of the Star Trek star. The Jeep Grand Cherokee in question was involved in a safety recall, which may have led to the accident.
According to Los Angeles police, Yelchin was pinned against a fence by his own vehicle after it rolled down a steep driveway. The actor died of his injuries at the scene. Suspicion has fallen on the gear shifter of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee which may cause the vehicle to roll away even when drivers believe they have placed it in Park mode. The gear shifter on the model is more akin to a joystick than a traditional shifter used for automatic transmissions.
Fiat Chrysler issued a recall in April for more than 1.1 million vehicles worldwide which have the same electronic gear shifter found in the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee after numerous complaints and accidents. Problems with the gear shifter have been linked to some 700 reported incidents, including 212 crashes and 41 injuries. Fiat Chrysler sent a letter to dealers in May saying it would have a software fix for the problem by July or August at the latest.
A Fiat Chrysler spokesman said there would be a “thorough investigation” of the accident.
Yelchin has had numerous film roles in his career and most-prominently appeared in the rebooted Star Trek film series, portraying the character of Chekov.
