Honda Civic Hatchback Spied Testing, Expected to Debut in October

3

After capturing the attention of enthusiasts worldwide with a concept, Honda is now testing the production Civic hatchback.

Caught by spy photographers in the Alps, the new Honda Civic hatchback is expected to make its debut later this year at the 2016 Paris Motor Show before it goes on sale as a 2017 model. This particular prototype appears to be the less powerful offering, since it is missing a center-exit exhaust, so it’s likely that there is either a 1.0-liter or 1.5-liter turbocharged engine under the hood. Despite wearing plenty of camouflage, we can see the full LED headlights up front.

It’s still unclear which powerplants Honda will use for the new hatchback model, but a safe bet are the engines found in the Honda Civic coupe. In the U.S., that is either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque or a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 174 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. More importantly, however, is that a new Civic Type R will arrive with this hatchback model and it has been confirmed for the North American market.

The new Civic hatchback will be built in the U.K. at Honda’s Swindon plant.
