FCA is readying a recall for the Jeep Grand Cherokee following the death of actor Anton Yelchin.
The automaker has sent its dealerships new software that can be installed to add a software-based “Auto Park” feature in the 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the intention of preventing the SUVs from moving if the driver’s side door is opened and the shifter is not in park. The company will begin notifying owners this Friday so that they can schedule an appointment with dealers. The software update will be available for 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with either the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine or the 5.7-liter V8. It will not work on the Grand Cherokees powered by a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine or the Grand Cherokee SRT with the 6.4-liter V8. Those vehicles will be recalled later this summer.
The recall comes following the death of Anton Yelchin, known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the latest series of Star Trek films. The 27-year-old was found pinned against the security gate of his Southern California home by a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was still running.
