If you thought Toyota’s crazy Camry drag car from SEMA two years ago was strictly for show, think again.
At the 2014 SEMA Show, Toyota unveiled the Sleeper Camry, which retained all four functional doors, the stock body and even factory wheels. Powered by a supercharged 5.7-liter V8 engine borrowed from the Tundra, Toyota said at the time the Camry pushed 850 horsepower and was capable of doing the quarter mile in just 9.8 seconds. Since then, however, the Camry hasn’t made a whole lot of noise, until now.
In a new episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, the former Tonight Show host once again called on old friend Tim Allen to do a fierce drag race battle. This time around, both were supposed to bring entirely stock cars, but Allen’s entry hardly fit the bill. So Leno decided to bring the ultimate sleeper to the race, Toyota’s Camry.
It’s nice to see that the Camry is more than just a show car, and, hopefully, it will make it rounds to various drag races around the country in the near future.
