A Chinese Automaker Might Change its Name Because of President Trump

GAC Motor is worried the “Trumpchi” name won’t sit well with Americans.

Trumpchi is the name of GAC Motor’s flagship brand, which the Chinese automaker hopes to introduce to the U.S. market in the future. Speaking to Reuters, GAC Motor design director Zhang Fan confirmed the automaker is considering a name change now that Donald Trump has been elected president of the United States.

“We saw people were laughing at this and took pictures looking only at this detail, and also put on Facebook or other websites,” said Zhang. “When we read all that feedback, we realized it might not be very positive promotion for the brand.”

The name Trumpchi is meant to sound like its Chinese name, Chuanqi. The Chinese name comes from a play on the word “legendary” and means passing good fortune. Zhang added that any similarity between the brand name and the U.S. president was unintentional.

With plans to enter the U.S. market in 2019, there’s a strong possibility now the name will be changed before it’s introduced. “At first I’d never thought of it, why change the name? It’s the president Americans selected, it’s similar to the president’s name, this has to be good right?” he added. “But in the United States the level of opposition (to Trump) is high.”
