Tesla wants to double the number of Superchargers available in the world by the end of the year.
The American automaker says it started off 2017 with over 5,000 Superchargers globally and will increase that total to more than 10,000 by year’s end. In North America, Tesla plans on increasing the number of Superchargers by 150 percent, and in the state of California alone, it will add more than 1,000 Superchargers. In addition, it will increase the number of Destination Charging connectors from 9,000 to 15,000 worldwide.
Tesla says it’s moving full speed on site selection and many sites will soon enter construction, so that they’re open in time for the summer travel season. Some of the sites along the busiest travel routes will be larger so that they can accommodate several dozen Tesla Superchargers. Many of the sites will also be built further off the highway, so that local Tesla drivers are able to charge quickly when needed, as Tesla hopes to make charging ubiquitous in urban centers.
