Since the McLaren P1′s official debut at the Geneva Auto Show, American supercar fans have been clamoring to get a taste of the F1-bred plug-in hybrid, which will make its US debut at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours D’elegance. 

A company spokesman confirmed as much to AutoGuide at a private event today. While McLaren made headlines at last year’s Pebble Beach with the outrageous one-off X1 model, the British company will once again try to steal the show with it’s LaFerrari-fighting P1 supercar.

The numbers still amaze: the combination of a twin-turbo V8 motor and a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and electric engine make a stunning 903-hp, which help blast the P1 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds, and up to 120 mph in 7 seconds. The sprint to 190 mph comes quickly as well, taking just 17 seconds.

Top speed is limited to 217 mph, and the car is also capable of running about 12 miles solely on electric power. McLaren is limiting production of the P1 to just 375 examples, each one costing about $1.15 million.

There’s no doubt that the P1 will look right at home at Pebble Beach, which runs in August this year.

Marrying two of the world’s high-efficiency automotive systems, Land Rover will debut its diesel hybrid Range Rovers later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will be offered with the diesel hybrid system, although neither will reach North America because the diesel engines don’t meet emissions standards. Despite that, the SUVs will offer a preview of what to expect from future products once those standards are on a level playing field.

The product offered to Europeans will use a 3.0-liter diesel engine in tandem with an electric motor that sits between the engine and transmission.

According to Land Rover engineer Stuart Frith, the SUVs will be on sale in Europe before the end of the year. Alongside those, he also said the brand will debut a new diesel V8-powered Range Rover Sport at the show capable of as much as 516 lb-ft of torque.

Aside from that, Land Rover will also eventually offer the Sport with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that currently powers the Evoque — a change made possible by the roughly 800 lbs lost for the 2014 model year.

At the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, Toyota revealed its Yundong Shuangqing II concept, a hybrid sedan that could preview a possible Corolla hybrid of the near future.

Back at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Toyota unveiled the Furia Concept, which previewed the future of the Corolla. Now, the brand has unveiled the Yundong Shuangqing II in China, which appears to be a slightly toned down Furia concept sporting a hybrid powertrain under the hood.

If this is indeed a redesigned Furia, Toyota could be considering a Corolla hybrid, which would directly compete with its Prius family. That may not be a major issue however, as the more traditional sedan styling would target a different consumer group. If it does happen, the Corolla hybrid would probably borrow its hybrid powertrain from the Prius c, which produces 99 hp.

The Maserati Ghibli has made its world premiere at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, making it official that Maserati will have two four-door sedans on sale at the same time in its history.

That’s not the only first for Maserati either as the Ghibli will also be the first Maserati production car in history to be powered by a diesel engine. The 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine has 275 hp while delivering 443 lb-ft of torque allowing it to accelerate to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds.

Ghibli buyers will also have the choice of two 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engines with the more powerful of the two delivering 410 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The other offers 330 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The Ghibli will have its sight set on competing with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, though its pricing will land it as a high-end competitor. It will be available in either rear-wheel drive or Maserati’s new Q4 all-wheel drive system.

At the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, Lexus expanded its GS lineup with the addition of a 300h model.

The GS 300h will target fleet and business customers, powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. It’s the same hybrid setup found in the IS 300h which has a total system output of 220 hp.

Like the IS 300h, the GS 300h won’t be making its way to American anytime soon, but will be sold in all other global markets including China, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

New full-LED foglights will be offered with the GS 300h along with a redesigned, full-color heads-up display.

A similar engine is equipped in the ES300h (which is sold in North America) where it makes 200 hp and a combined 40 mpg.

For the first time in Acura’s storied history, the Japanese automaker has unveiled an all-new concept vehicle outside of North America.

Apart from its design, little is know about the new concept crossover. Acura says it offers the utility of an SUV with the environmental performance of a small vehicle.

Acura plans on turning the concept SUV-X into a production model within the next three years and it will be produced in China and for China.

Honda has introduced a new concept multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show called the Concept M.

The Concept M is developed specifically for the local Chinese market and was designed by the Automobile R&D Center of Honda R&D in Japan. The Concept M features a radical design and the Japanese automaker hopes to “introduce a new-value vehicle that offers the attributes of a passenger car while adding new value through the realization of a comfortable and spacious cabin space made possible by Honda’s packaging technologies, and the fun of driving.”

Honda has confirmed that it’s making progress in the development of a mass-production vehicle based on the Concept M. It hopes to introduce it to the Chinese market next year, though don’t be surprised if much of the radical design has been subdued before then.

Designed specifically to appeal to a new generation Chinese customers, Nissan has unveiled its latest concept car at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the Friend-Me.

The Japanese automaker believes that this new demographic of Chinese youth will soon be the world’s largest customer segment and hopes to lead the way in delivering Chinese customer aspirations. The Friend-Me concept is a four-passenger sedan with a futuristic and sleek style, appealing to a younger, more non-traditional generation.

It features a low and wide stance with short front and rear overhangs giving it a chunky, yet aggressive and sporty impression. Inside are four seats with display screens for each individual. Nissan has designed the screens so that each person in the car can share whatever they’re looking at on their smartphone onto the screen of everyone else in the car.

The Friend-Me concept could become a reality fairly easily. It’s based on an existing Nissan sedan architecture and requires a minimum number of unique components. The automaker’s PureDrive hybrid powertrain would deliver more than enough power for local city driving.

“We call our solution Distilled Da Qi,” said Taiji Toyota, Vice President of Nissan Design China. “Da Qi is about casting an aura, about standing out, but at the same time going with the flow, fitting in. It’s a question of balance, and we’ve worked to refine it right down to the essence. The result adds an entirely new and youthful dimension to the sedan category.”

If you’re a luxury automaker trying to be successful in China, you better have a long wheelbase model or two in your lineup.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the long wheelbase variant of its updated E-Class model at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. Designed specifically for the growing luxury market in China, the E-Class long wheelbase has over 5.5 inches more legroom in the rear.

For additional convenience, the front passenger seat can also be electrically adjusted from the rear. And to cater to the growing changes in styling preferences within the Chinese market, the German automaker will be offering two different front ends on the E-Class long wheelbase model. The Sedan will feature the classic, three-dimensional sedan radiator grille in three-louvre look with the Mercedes star on the hood. The Sport Sedan on the other hand will come with the sporty front end with a centrally positioned star to create a distinctive, dynamic look.

The long wheelbase E-Class will launch in China as the E 260 L (204 hp), E 300 L (245 hp), and E 400 L (333 hp).

Looking to grow its sales in China, Ford has revealed an all-new compact sedan at the Shanghai Motor Show, with an all-too familiar name: the Ford Escort.

According to Ford, the Escort concept “is designed to meet the demands of Chinese consumers within a specific subsegment of China’s largest and fastest-growing segments, compact cars.”

On the outside, the Ford Escort concept captures all of Ford’s recent designs, but in a more subtle and simplified fashion. Its signature hexagonal grille is prevalent while LED-equipped headlights and chrome-trimmed foglight housings accent the front end.

Unfortunately, Ford has kept details on the Escort concept light, including what might be lurking under the hood. We expect more details to be released when the Escort gets closer to production form.

As expected, Lamborghini has unveiled a more outrageous version of its Aventador supercar called the LP720-4 50 Anniversario edition, featuring more power, and additional visual and handling upgrades.

Limited to just 100 units world wide, each LP720-4 will have a forged composite badge celebrating the Italian automakers 50 year anniversary.

The vehicle features a special paint finish and a unique interior trim. In fact, the Giallo Maggio yellow paint job is a tribute to the most popular color choice by Lamborghini customers since the Lamborghini Miura. There are also a few exterior bits contrasted with a matte black finish which help show off the supercar’s gorgeous lines.

Under the hood is the same V12 engine used in Aventadors of old, but calibrated to make 20 more horsepower. This means that when paired with the cars four-wheel drive system and ISR transmission, the Aventador can sprint to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 217 mph.

The most noticeable change with this model is the newly designed front and rear fascias. Front air intakes along with an aerodynamic splitter are now larger and extended, and small wings on the sides of the new splitter are there as well. Lamborghini says that the rear end is completely new, and follows suit with the front end with a bigger diffuser and new touches to help with engine ventilation. Overall, the car has improved aerodynamic efficiency, which contributes to greater stability at the extreme limits of the car.

Inside, the car features a new stitching pattern, which is the only highlight inside this Italian masterpiece, and isn’t found on any other Lamborghini out there.

Unveiled today at the Shanghai Auto Show, Buick has revealed an updated version of its Riviera Concept, foreshadowing the future look of the brand’s vehicles.

The fourth global concept co-developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) it is said to herald, “the start of a new chapter for the 110-year-old Buick brand,” said Shanghai GM President Ye Yongming.

Said to be inspired by the “dynamic nature of water” GM VP of global design Ed Welburn commented that, “It is a great opportunity to share Buick’s future design language and technology strategy.”

Both the new front grille design and wing-shaped daytime running lights will become key parts of Buick’s future design DNA.

Powered by a dual-mode W-PHEV (wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) system, the Riviera Concept can act as either an electric vehicle or as a hybrid, and can be charged conventionally or wirelessly. The charge port itself has been integrated into the iconic Buick porthole design.

Technical highlights include four-wheel steering, an air ride suspensions system and GM’s electromagnetic shocks. Looking ahead to the future of safety system it uses 10 high-resolution camera and 18 sensors to watch the road ahead, displaying information on the windshield and making possible a list of features that include everything from blind spot alert and lane departure warning to an autopilot feature.

Buick has made no indication that a production version of the concept is in the works, though the brand did recently trademark the Riviera name indicating that a coupe is set to return to the brand under just such a badge.
