After impressing us during a comparison test earlier in the year, we get our hands on a 2014 Mazda CX-5 for an extended test drive. Over the next three months we will put this vehicle through a barrage of tests and situations to see how well it stacks up during everyday life.

The AutoGuide family is constantly growing and we would like to welcome our newest family member. No, we haven’t hired another caroholic into our ranks. This new addition is a little more mechanical, it is the 2014 Mazda CX-5.

FAST FACTS
1. Power comes from a 2.5 L four-cylinder engine that makes 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque.
2. Our all-wheel drive test vehicle is officially rated at 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
3. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission available with the upgraded 2.5 L engine.
4. Our fully-loaded long-term test vehicle comes in at $31,590 after destination charges.

Being the first compact crossover Mazda has designed independently, and the first vehicle to both wear the KODO design language and be built from the ground up with SkyActiv technology, this is a very important automobile for the company. And it’s our new long term test car.

Since coming on the scene last year, the CX-5 has received praise from us for its efficient operation, good dynamics and great looks. The only real weakness we found with the 2013 CX-5 was a lack of power, especially when loaded up. For 2014 this was addressed with a larger engine that pumps power up by 29 hp.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Upon its release, we immediately threw the 2014 CX-5 into a comparison test earlier this year against the all-new 2013 Toyota RAV4. The Mazda came out on top and we were so impressed by this compact crossover that we wanted to see how it would stack up over the long haul, during normal, everyday life. To do this, we rang up Mazda and asked if could borrow a CX-5 for the next three months. Foolishly, they said yes.

The model we chose to evaluate is the fully loaded 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring technology package with AWD. It comes equipped with items like adaptive HID headlights, rain sensing windshield wipers, heated mirrors, power sunroof, push button start, an eight-way power driver’s seat, Tom-Tom navigation, 19-inch wheels wearing 225/55R19 all-season tires and Mazda’s city safe braking system. With every option box checked off, this CX-5 comes in at $31,590 including destination charges.

See Also: 2014 Mazda CX-5 Review

By selecting either the Touring or Grand Touring trim levels, the base 2.0L four-cylinder engine is dropped in favor of the all-new 2.5L four-cylinder motor that makes 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the only down side to the upgraded engine is that it cannot be paired to a manual transmission like the base engine can; a six-speed automatic is the exclusive transmission for the 2.5L unit. Our all-wheel drive test vehicle is expected to achieve 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. We will regularly update observed fuel economy over the coming months.

GOING TO BE PUT TO THE TEST

During a regular road test, we are only allotted a week or so behind the wheel of the evaluation vehicle. Although it does give us a good general feel, it is hard to test a car in every possible scenario a potential owner would. But with this CX-5, it will run the complete gauntlet of tests. It will be taken on family road trips, weekend getaways and staff business outings. It will endure daily rush hour commutes through total gridlock, evening grocery store runs and weekend hardware store ventures.

But the toughest test of all may well be when we give it to our video editors. Becoming the official camera support vehicle, the CX-5 will need to be able to go where ever the vehicle being shot does. That means it could end up on racetracks, off-road course, city parking lots or urban streets.

See Also: 2014 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2013 Toyota RAV4 Comparison Test – Video

After having the crossover for only a few days, our opinion on it hasn’t changed much. It is currently achieving decent gas mileage, has some serious handling prowess for a crossover and looks great; especially in soul red. The 19-inch wheels really set off the exterior and the CX-5 achieves a somewhat aggressive look despite being a compact crossover. The HID headlights illuminate the road very well at night and add a classy touch to this family hauler.

SMALL ANNOYANCES

So far, the CX-5 has easily handled having two child seats installed for a 700-mile family road trip and the 34.1 cu.ft. trunk accommodated all the associated luggage with ease. The soft touch dash and simple control layouts make it easy to operate even if the telescopic steering wheel does not come far enough out for some of our staff.

Another issue some staff members have found with the CX-5 has to do with the transmission. It seems to hold gears, both high and low, too long during normal operation and on long drives can become quite annoying. But power is no longer an issue with this vehicle thanks to that bump in engine size.

THE VERDICT

But, the long-term testing has merely begun. Over the next 90 days we will continue to put the CX-5 through its paces and report back how it handles the daily grind. Do you have any questions about the vehicle or how it handles specific scenarios? Ask away on our Facebook page, Tweet us, or post below in the comments section. We would love to hear from you.

It’s a dangerous world out there. Buying a new vehicle has more perils and pitfalls than the Atari game of nearly the same name. Instead of swinging from vines or jumping over obstacles, car shoppers can skip the aerobic workout by simply visiting AutoGuide.com. We’re here to help and we’re glad to do it.

This week Lindsay virtually reached out to us through the tangle of tubes that comprise the Internet. She’s in need of a new vehicle and wants a capable, comfortable SUV to replace her aging Mountaineer. Prior to owning Mercury’s midsize utility she had a number of Ford Explorers. Like a true patriot she prefers to buy American, but she’s not opposed to owning a fo’rin vee-hick-uhl.

When it comes to features Lindsay would love a sunroof and a great sound system. Navigation is a must. Leather, heated seats and a backup camera as well as power windows and door locks are practically required. She’d also love a 100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. In the financial department she has up to $30,000 to spend. Paraphrasing her e-mail, can she drink champagne on a beer budget? Well, technically no because that’s drunk driving, but we’ll do our best to help.

Suggestion #1 – 2013 Ford Escape Titanium

Since Lindsay likes to support America our first suggestion is red, white and blue, Blue Oval that is. The Ford Escape is built in Louisville, Kentucky by a proud domestic automaker. It doesn’t get much more American than that.

Neatly dovetailing with her 30-grand budget is a front-wheel-drive Titanium model. Including destination and delivery charges the window sticker for this vehicle should be right around $29,995. At that price it comes with a variety of must-have features including leather seats, dual-zone climate control and a power liftgate.

It’s got her tech fix, too. The Titanium-trim Escape features the company’s temperamental MyFord Touch navigation and telematics system. High-end Sony audio is also part of the package. Other niceties include fog lamps, heated mirrors and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Under the hood this compact crossover is powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. It delivers a full 178 horsepower with impressive turbo torque, 184 lb-ft at just 2,500 RPM.

Based on the company’s fun-to-drive Focus small car the Escape is entertaining on a twisty road. It’s got a nice interior and does very well in crash tests. There are a lot of plusses to this vehicle, but as with anything there are some minuses as well.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Ford Escape Review

The Escape has been on the receiving end of a number of recalls, plus Ford has been slammed in recent quality surveys. Adding insult to injury the company’s fuel-saving EcoBoost engines don’t deliver the economy they promise, and that’s a real problem. According to the EPA it should manage 23 miles per gallon around town and 33 on the highway, scores that result in a combined rating of 26 MPG. Good luck getting that.

Suggestion #2 – 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Matching the fun-loving Ford in driving dynamics is the Mazda CX-5. It’s every bit as enjoyable on a curvy road as its domestic competitor, and maybe even more. The range-topping Grand Touring model should deliver the goods Lindsay is looking for.

Under the hood this zoom-zoom-certified crossover is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder. At 184 ponies it puts out a skosh more power than the Escape’s small-displacement EcoBoost engine; torque weighs in at 185 lb-ft. And just like the Ford it’s matched exclusively to a six-speed-automatic transmission. This powertrain combo works very well and delivers more than adequate acceleration.

Under their hoods the CX-5 and Escape are essentially equals, and that parity continues in the content department as well. The Mazda comes with leather-covered seats, tukus toasters, a premium Bose sound system and TomTom navigation. It also comes with a sliding sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, heated side-view mirrors and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Pricing is always an important consideration when purchasing a new vehicle, but luckily for Lindsay the Grand Touring CX-5 fits her budget perfectly. Optioned with the features she wants including the technology package it stickers for $30,040, including shipping and handling fees.

SEE ALSO: 2014 Mazda CX-5 Review

Beyond pricing, performance and features fuel economy is yet another area where the Escape and CX-5 are within spittin’ distance of each other. The Mazda model stickers at 25 miles per gallon in the city and up to 32 on the highway. It does a couple MPG better than the Ford around town but slightly worse on the open road. In reality there’s likely a significant difference between the two as the CX-5 will probably deliver what it promises.

Suggestion #3 – 2013 Honda CR-V EX-L

Suggestion No. 3 has giant chrome “H” badges on its grille and tailgate. The CR-V is a Honda from stem to stern. This compact crossover is rife with clever engineering, solid construction and a lot of likeable features.

Right off the bat it nails the price point we’re chasing. According to Honda the top-of-the-line EX-L model is worth $29,875, including destination fees. At that level it comes with dual-zone climate control, a navigation system, power windows and locks, cruise control and a multi-angle backup camera. Leather-covered seats are also included, as are heated front chairs. Check, check and check.

Powering the CR-V is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Matching our other two vehicular suggestions it delivers a solid 185 horsepower with 163 lb-ft of torque. However, one downside to this and other Hondas is found just aft of the engine. It’s got an anachronistic five-speed automatic transmission. We live in a time where seven, eight and even nine-speed gearboxes are becoming the norm; a five-speed just doesn’t cut it anymore. On the bright side it’s responsive and smooth.

When it comes to fuel economy this Honda does surprisingly well, given its antiquated drivetrain. The CR-V stickers at 23 MPG city and 31 highway, resulting in a combined score of 26, which is identical to the Escape. Like the Mazda (and unlike the Ford) it will likely deliver on that promise.

Along with its transmission, driving dynamics is another area where the CR-V comes up short. It’s a perfectly fine vehicle but it’s not as engaging as the CX-5 or Escape. This Honda is about reliable, efficient transportation, not carving corners, which is fine because Lindsay is not looking for a sports car, she wants a comfortable replacement for her aged Mountaineer.

SEE ALSO: 2012 Honda CR-V Review

Fun-to-drive may be a trait the CR-V lacks, but it makes up for that in another area: quality. Honda has a reputation for building some of the most reliable vehicles in the world and this compact crossover should deliver the goods. We expect the CR-V to be the most reliable of this trio.

DISHONORABLE MENTION

Another vehicle worth considering is the 2013 RAV4. Like Honda, Toyota also has proud heritage of quality, and the company’s RAV4 should deliver decades of faithful service. It also offers the features Lindsay is looking for and an affordable price. But there’s one knock against it, leather seats are NOT AVAILABLE, even on the top-end Limited model. Buyers have to make do with SofTex imitation animal hides. For shame, FOR SHAME!

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is another vehicle that finds itself in Ask AutoGuide’s Dishonorable Mention category. The vehicle delivers a decent driving experience, is well made, attractively styled and comes with a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. It has no real knocks against it, except one. It costs too much! Appropriately optioned it’s more than two grand too expensive. Since when can Hyundai get away with charging premium prices?

THE VERDICT

So, what’s the perfect replacement for Lindsay’s Mountaineer? Honestly, just about anything. In all seriousness between the Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V, which is the right crossover for her? Each vehicle has its strengths and weaknesses but after carefully weighing these attributes we recommend the Honda CR-V. It’s practically guaranteed to deliver years of trouble-free service, it’s also efficient, quiet and safe; it’s even affordable when loaded with the options Lindsay is lusting after.

As always, good luck Lindsay in your quest for a new car and thanks again for taking the time to Ask AutoGuide.

Crossovers are all about fuel efficiency and family functionality. They blend attributes of cars with traits of traditional SUVs to create vehicles that are neither fish nor fowl; they’re the undecided voter of the automotive world, essentially the state of Ohio. Is it going red? Will it be blue? One thing’s certain; it’ll never go to the Green Party.

There are literally dozens of different crossovers on the market today. Car shoppers eyeing this vehicle segment can feel more than a skosh overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available. Venturing out into the automotive wilderness alone to hunt for one is foolhardy at best. Dealerships are unforgiving to shoppers unprepared. Like recreational prostate exams the outcome of these endeavors is rarely good, as such it’s wise to ask for assistance.

This week Greg sent in an e-mail requesting aid. He wants a new set of wheels and has a little more than 40 grand to spend. He’s after a crossover but is not necessarily opposed to large sedans. Presumably of the gangly persuasion, he said front and rear-seat legroom is a top priority. He also mentioned space for five passengers is essential. Additionally Greg wants something that handles well, offers the cargo room of a small SUV and gets at least 24 miles per gallon combined.

Spoilers, tacky plastic add-ons and anything “redneck” are forbidden. Needless to say we won’t be suggesting Truck Nutz. Perhaps he’s interested in a pair of more subtle of Auto Ovaries.

What vehicles fit Greg’s requirements without shattering his budget like Evil Knievel’s skeleton after a botched motorcycle jump? Multi-talented AutoGuide staff members have crunched the numbers and generated a short list of recommendations.

Suggestion #1 – 2013 BMW X3 xDrive 28i

The BMW X3 should check at least one of Greg’s boxes, after all it’s an “Ultimate Driving Machine.” This crossover delivers an engaging on-road experience but does it meet any of his other criteria? Surprisingly, yes.

The xDrive 28i model may be saddled with a dreadful name but the vehicle itself is anything but a clunker. Aft of its iconic twin-kidney grille is a modern marvel of motor-vehicle engineering. The X3 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 240 horsepower mated to a quick-witted eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s smart enough to be on Jeopardy but since gearboxes can’t talk, write or make a wager it will have to sit this one out. Additionally, all-wheel drive is standard, which should deliver confident handling in all weather conditions.

Fuel economy was another one of Greg’s big concerns. Can a sporty BMW possibly deliver respectable mileage? Remember, things aren’t always as they seem; serial killer John Wayne Gacy was a clown. There’s nothing funny about murder, nor the X3’s EPA scores. This highfalutin crossover should get 21 miles per gallon in the city and up to 28 on the highway, which makes for an average of 24 MPG in mixed driving.

In his initial correspondence Greg mentioned he prefers cloth seats but in the luxury segment you pretty much two choices: leather or simulated leather. The X3 comes standard with some sort of fancy vinyl but genuine animal skins are $1,450 more. If it’s a big problem Gregory can always grab a couple seat covers. They’re constructed of numerous materials from imitation chinchilla fur to wooden beads.

The X3’s combined fuel economy score is spot on and so is its pricing. The xDrive 28i model starts around $41,000 including shameful destination and delivery fees. That leaves a little bit of budget to play with. For guaranteed driving fun Greg can step up to the dynamic handling package, which is $1,400. It includes variable sport steering and something called “performance control.” Basically this alters the all-wheel-drive system’s torque balance to send more power rearward.

SEE ALSO: 2013 BMW X3 xDrive 28i Review

We considered suggesting the cold weather package because it offers niceties like heated front and rear seats as well as an electrically warmed tiller, all for only $905. But there’s a catch, it necessitates getting leather seats, which cost a bunch more. For this reason jettisoned the kiester toasters. Germans love to play pricing games like that but we refuse to stay at BMW’s hotel on Boardwalk.

Speaking of sneaky things, BMW charges an additional $550 for a metallic paint job. And how convenient for them; almost all of the colors offered cost extra. If you want to avoid paying more for paint you’re limited to black or white.

In any event the 2014 BMW X3 xDrive 28i should push all of the right buttons by offering a spacious, comfortable interior, decent fuel economy and an engaging driving experience. With a non-metallic paint job, “leatherette” seats and the Dynamic Sport Package its out-the-door price should be a whisker less than 42 grand, perfectly in line with Greg’s budget.

Suggestion #2 – 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC 4MATIC

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are fearsome rivals. When one of these companies introduces a redesigned vehicle or brings a new technology to market you can bet the other will soon follow. Predictably, the Volk in Stuttgart are not about to let their Bavarian colleagues go uncontested in the luxury crossover segment. The X3 is a solid vehicle but Mercedes has its own ideas of how things are done.

You say potato, I say potato; Mercedes says “Rudolph,” BMW “Otto.” The X3 runs on gasoline but the GLK250 features an ultra-efficient 2.1-liter diesel engine. With twin turbochargers this compression-ignition wonder delivers 200 horsepower, which is not an overwhelming amount by today’s standards, but it more than makes up for any deficiency with torque. This little monster puts out 369 lb-ft of twist. That’s more than a Ford Expedition with a 5.4-liter V8!

Handling all of that torque is an efficient and effective seven-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four corners via standard all-wheel drive.

So, what’s the benefit of that BlueTEC diesel? Well, the GLK250 is rated at 24 miles per gallon in the city and up to 33 on the highway, figures that blow BMW away like a blade of grass in a hurricane. But that’s not the whole story. In real-world mixed driving AutoGuide extracted some 35 MPG from a GLK without even trying!

However, there are two caveats. Diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline, typically by around 15 percent. Additionally, to meet U.S. emissions requirements the GLK needs a special fluid that cleans up the engine exhaust. Periodically this solution, called “AdBlue” has to be replenished, which is another expense.

Base price for the GLK250 BlueTEC 4MATIC is $39,495 out the door including $905 in protection money… we mean shipping and handling fees. That’s with ZERO options added, but to be fair Greg isn’t looking for any electronic gadgets or anatomically correct additions to his trailer-hitch.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC 4MATIC Review

At that price buyers are treated to standard HD radio, a 10-way power driver’s seat and bovine-approved MB Tex seating surfaces. Bluetooth is also included at no extra charge.

Like the X3 Mercedes’ GLK250 is a very premium vehicle with a nicely trimmed interior and an attractive body. It’s kind of like actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie, beautiful inside and out. Our next vehicle has its strengths but is not quite as breathtaking.

Suggestion #3 – 2013 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

So far we’ve compared two midsize luxury crossovers. They each have their strengths and weaknesses, though both offer a premium experience. However, if Greg wants a little more room and an extra row of seats these two aren’t going to cut it, but Toyota’s Highlander Hybrid could be just the ticket.

With its aft-two rows folded this husky family hauler offers 94.1 cubic feet of storage space. That’s quite a bit more than served up by the X3 and GLK; in fact it’s nearly twice as much. Another thing that’s sure to please Greg are the seats; cloth is standard!

The Highlander Hybrid is hauled around by a 3.5-liter V6 that puts out 231 horsepower, but that’s not the whole story. Of course the internal-combustion engine is augmented by bunch of hybrid wizardry. With an onboard battery pack and torque-rich electric motor net system horsepower is a more appropriate 280. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) serves as the ratio swapper.

What does all of that rich, nougatey, gasoline/electric goodness get you? About 28 miles per gallon. The Highlander Hybrid is a triple threat, delivering the big two-eight on all three driving cycles, city, highway and combined. As always your mileage will vary, but with this hybrid it shouldn’t be by very much.

So, this Toyota is spacious, efficient and comes with fabric-covered perches, what else does it offer? In the amenities department fog lamps, intermittent wipers and cruise control are all standard fare. Rear-seat air conditioning and a navigation system are also included.

In the pricing department this vehicle is actually right in line with the BMW and Mercedes. With no options it’s just about $41,000. That’s a lot of greenbacks for a mass-market Toyota.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Toyota Highlander Review

When it comes to downsides there’s one major drawback to the Highlander: driving dynamics. It’s bigger and hundreds of pounds heavier than either the X3 or GLK, plus it’s saddled with a hybrid drivetrain, three things that result in copious precipitation on your carnival procession. This car will never drive as well as its smaller German competitors.

But making up for that shortcoming is one major trump card. Quality is the right bauer in the automotive euchre deck, it has the ability to take down all comers and level the playing field. Toyota’s legendary reputation for reliability earns the Highlander back some points it lost in the dynamics department.

DISHONORABLE MENTION

One vehicle that could have been a strong contender in this crossover quarrel is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It’s got a lot of check marks in its “plus” column including handsome styling, good road manners and a beautiful interior that’s probably nicer than the cockpit of the BMW X3. But subpar fuel economy deflates an otherwise excellent package. Even with a V6 engine, two-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission it only averages 20 miles per gallon, which is 20 percent short of what Greg wants and 100 percent rules it out.

The Lexus RX is also an intriguing option. It’s high on luxury and design with even better quality than Toyota. But the F Sport version, which is probably the only model worth owning starts at more than $47,000! The RX is knocked out of contention without a shot being fired. Is it Japanese or French?

THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Each vehicle in this week’s installment of Ask AutoGuide has its strengths and weaknesses. With a potent gasoline engine and an eight-speed gearbox the BMW is almost certainly the most fun to toss around. Unfortunately its interior is a bit disappointing and it’s not all that fuel efficient.

The Mercedes GLK250 is the economy champ with its torque-rich diesel engine. But that advantage comes at a price, namely more costly fuel and extra maintenance in the form of exhaust after-treatment fluid that needs to be replenished.

Lastly there’s the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, a vehicle that’s a size class larger than the BMW and Mercedes. It’s got the most interior room, a third row of seats and it gets pretty good fuel economy. But it’s kind of pricey for what you get and it’s no fun to drive, plus a brand-new model will launch shortly. It’s probably best to wait.

Choices, but which one is right for Greg? Well, after carefully weighing all of the options we’d recommend the BMW X3. It’s luxurious, fun to drive and just efficient enough; it’s a jack of all trades and a master of fun.

Hyundai delivered its first line-produced hydrogen-powered car today in Europe.

Actually, it delivered its first 15 to the city of Copenhagen for use in a municipal fleet. The hydrogen-powered ix35 fleet was turned over during a ceremony opening Denmark’s first hydrogen refueling station. While hydrogen vehicles are already available in North America, these are the first for Europe.

The car can travel at up to 100 mph and the automaker says it can travel up to about 370 miles on a single tank.

North American customers can expect to see the Tucson FCEV available in 2015. When that happens, the brand is aiming to sell roughly 1,000 units annually and hopes to expand sales to 10,000.

Doing that will require new fuel infrastructure and Hyundai is working with the Department of Energy in a private-public partnership to make stations more available. Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Nissan are all part of the program.

Hydrogen vehicles could offer a more practical green transportation alternative to electric cars because they can be refueled in about the same time as a gas-powered car.

Since all three vehicles will be built on a common platform that the American automaker shares with Fiat’s Alfa Romeo Giulietta, it simply made sense to move production from Toluca, Mexico where the current Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont are produced. Meanwhile, production of the Dodge Avenger will cease at Sterling Heights.

You’ve been lusting after if for two long weeks, suffering for want of that which keeps you going. The withdrawal symptoms have probably been unbearable; we’d hazard to bet you’re shaking like a James Bond martini still in the mixer. You’ve been patiently waiting and finally we’re happy to oblige your carnal yearnings… but for God’s sake leave your trousers on!

Due to scheduling issues the world-famous Ask AutoGuide feature had to skip a week, but believe us, we weren’t happy about the situation. We’re sadder than a cartload of kiddies smashing a piñata only to find it full of math homework and broken promises about summer camp. Maybe next year, son.

But that was then and today is now, for the time being at least. Ask AutoGuide is back for another riveting installment and this week Kathy reached out for some car-buying advice. She’s on the prowl for a super-affordable vehicle with all-wheel drive. Of course reliability and fuel economy matter, as do features. Styling is irrelevant to her, but she did say she preferred the look of cars to crossovers.

Two things she desperately wants are heated seats and remote start. Kathy lives in a northern climate where the winter winds sting like the tip of a bullwhip. Rumor has it her home is the fictional ice-planet of Hoth from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, except there aren’t super-sweet snow speeders and tauntauns. Han Solo could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he just drove a crossover instead riding on top of a bipedal, goat-like alien critter. Have you driven a Harrison Ford lately? Without further delay, here are this week’s vehicle recommendations for Kathy.

Suggestion #1 – 2014 Jeep Patriot

When it comes to value the Jeep Patriot spells it out with a capital “V,” in neon colors and 1,000-point font. Base price for an all-wheel-drive version of this “Trail Rated” utility is just $19,190 including $995 in shipping and handling charges (excluding any rebates). That’s a SCREAMING deal by today’s standards, where the average new vehicle probably costs around 30 grand. According to parent-company Chrysler this the best-priced 4×4 in America.

At that level the Patriot comes standard with niceties like cruise control, fog lamps and side airbags. Crank windows and manual door locks are also included, though hardly worth shouting about. Notice anything missing? Oh right, heated seats and remote start. To get front-row bun-warmers Kathy has to level up to the pricier Latitude model, which starts at $24,390. Regrettably remote start is not offered on the Patriot, though she can almost certainly purchase an aftermarket unit.

Behind the vehicle’s iconic seven-slot grille is an efficient four-cylinder gasoline engine. Displacing 2.4-liters it delivers a respectable 172 horsepower with 165 lb-ft of torque. On the entry-level all-wheel-drive Patriot it’s matched to a five-speed manual transmission.

If a self-shifting gearbox is mandatory a brand-new six-speed unit is available for the 2014 model year; a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is still offered as well depending on trim level and equipment. Surprisingly the entry-level five-speed unit is the most fuel efficient. According to the EPA it delivers 23 miles per gallon in the city and up to 28 on the interstate.

SEE ALSO: 2010 Jeep Patriot Review

The Jeep Patriot delivers off-road capability that’s perfect for people living on a glacier, it’s pretty efficient and it has great crash-test scores. This little truckster earned “Top Safety Pick” honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). If Kathy can live without heated seats she can get one for peanuts.

Suggestion #2 – 2013 Nissan Juke

Well, she said style didn’t matter; we’re going to find out if that’s true or not. Our second recommendation is the otherworldly Nissan Juke, a subcompact crossover that looks like it fell off the alien mother-ship when they abducted Courtney Love and took off with her sobriety all those years ago.

To make a food analogy “Juke” is the “chitterling” of the car world; if the latter were called “hog rectum” nobody would eat it. If the former were named “styling disaster” nobody would buy it… oh wait, hardly anybody does, which is a real shame because Nissan’s littlest crossover is actually a very capable vehicle.

Kathy can net herself an entry-level Juke with all-wheel drive for less than $22,000, including destination and delivery fees. That’s a great price for a reliable, fun-to-drive vehicle.

All Jukes are powered by a turbocharged, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine brandishing direct fuel injection. Output is an impressive 188 horsepower with 177 lb-ft of twist. A CVT is the only “gearbox” available with the exception of the performance-oriented NISMO version, which is offered with a proper six-speed manual transmission.

Despite diminutive dimensions the Juke is a “Top Safety Pick,” just like Jeep’s Patriot. Also mirroring the Chrysler crossover you have to climb the model lineup to get sought-after features. Heated seats are only offered on the range-topping SL model, which carries a base price of $26,780. Unfortunately remote start is not offered at any price, so put your checkbook away.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Nissan Juke SL AWD Review

With a small, forced-induction engine and miserly CVT you’d expect the Juke to impress at the fuel pump, and it does. Even with the extra friction and weight of all-wheel drive it delivers 25 MPG in urban conditions and up to 30 on the interstate. That’s not too shabby for a fun-to-drive vehicle, though the CVT does detract from the party. These transmissions always feel like they’re slipping and they often exacerbate the noise and vibration issues inherent in small engines. Still, the Juke is a winner that should deliver a youthful experience, good fuel economy and long-term quality.

Suggestion #3 – 2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport AWD

And last but certainly not least in this week’s Ask AutoGuide salvo is the Mazda CX-5. This Zoom-Zoom-infused crossover is far and away the most sophisticated and most enjoyable of the trio; and of course it’s also the most expensive.

Prepare to pony-up some buckaroos because an all-wheel-drive Sport model starts at nearly $25,000, including extra charges. At that price it comes with power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a cabin filter, 17-inch alloy wheels as well as a host of airbags. And here’s a shocker (not really), it’s also a “Top Safety Pick.”

Regrettably heated seats are only offered on the Grand Touring model, which costs thousands of dollars more than the CX-5 Sport. One consolation is the availability of remote start. It’s a mere $525 option and is available on all models. Here’s to side-stepping frostbite!

As you’d expect from Mazda this family-friendly vehicle is surprisingly fun to drive. It almost feels like a high-riding Miata, and that is an accomplishment for an all-wheel-drive utility. Hopefully Kathy lives near some curving roads so she can exercise this vehicle’s chassis.

Under the CX-5 Sport’s snout is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Unfortunately it only delivers 155 horsepower, which is not very much for a vehicle of this class. In all-wheel-drive trim it’s matched exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. A larger, more muscular engine is offered on higher-end models, which makes up for the power deficit.

SEE ALSO: 2012 Mazda CX-5 Review

That little four-banger may be a bit overmatched when it comes to hauling the CX-5 around but there is a beneficial tradeoff: improved fuel economy. This crossover delivers the best numbers of the bunch; it’s another case of getting what you pay for. Tooling around town Mazda’s smart-sized utility ought to stretch a gallon of gasoline 25 miles. On the highway things only get better, improving to 31. That makes for a combined score of 28 MPG, small-car territory from just a few years ago.

DISHONORABLE MENTION

So far we’ve presented three different vehicular options for Kathy to mull over. Each product has its strengths and weaknesses, but they’re all pretty good choices. However, the crossover market is HUGE. In fact it’s probably the most vibrant segment in the automotive industry today. There are literally dozens of other vehicles worthy of her consideration. Here are two value-conscious options she may not have thought of.

Mostly forgotten, Mitsubishi does peddle an intriguing crossover in the form of the Outlander Sport. For less than 24 grand Kathy can get a small utility vehicle with 148-horsepower, a thrifty CVT and remote start, which is part of the $755 all-weather package. Downsides? For starters it’s a Mitsu; the company could be just seconds away from going out of business. Nobody wants to buy a car from a brand that’s been Oldsmobiled.

Of course if she likes Japanese vehicles Kathy could always take a peek at the Subaru Impreza. This small car is offered in both sedan and hatchback body styles, plus all-wheel drive is STANDARD. With an optional CVT and the $500 all-weather package, including heated front seats, the Impreza sedan stickers for right around $22,000. If you want more information on this car you can go read just about any one of the preceding installments of Ask AutoGuide because we’ve covered the Impreza in practically every one; the only reason we didn’t recommend it this week is because we’re thoroughly tired of mentioning it!

AND THE WINNER IS…

So many good choices, so little time. Here’s our final advice to Kathy.

The Mazda CX-5 is far and away the nicest crossover mentioned here. It’s fun to drive, highly fuel efficient and is built for the long haul. Unfortunately it’s quite pricey. Kathy is on a budget and the CX-5 just broke it.

Like the Zoom-Zoom CX-5 Nissan’s Juke is also fun and functional, plus it’s as far from a box as you can get. But it may be too small for normal use and the design is just plain weird. Even with all-wheel drive on board it gets a passing vote.

And that leaves just one vehicle: America… we mean the Jeep Patriot. It really won us over with its extreme value, something Kathy was looking for in a new vehicle. Of course it’s also available with all-wheel drive and seat heaters on higher-trim modes. It’s efficient, reasonably roomy and safe. Even though Chrysler may not have a strong track record of quality this little truck has been on the market for a number of years so any major issues should have been ironed out by now. We recommend the 2014 Jeep Patriot; the money saved can go towards heating pads and an aftermarket remote starter.

As always, good luck Kathy in your quest for a new car and thanks again for taking the time to Ask AutoGuide.

If you need a little assistance shopping for your next vehicle feel free to do the same. Send a short message to ask@AutoGuide.com. Let us know the basics of what you’re looking for. How many seats do you need? What size of vehicle do you want? How much are you willing to spend? With some of those fundamentals out of the way we’ll get busy to come up with two or three must-see vehicles that you’ll have to put on your test-drive list.

Owners of the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are reporting issues with their new crossovers described as “shuddering” and a sudden loss of power.

Some owners have taken their vehicles back to their dealerships with one mechanic’s report saying the vehicle was hesitant upon acceleration from a stop. The Japanese automaker has been contacted in regards to the issue and hopes to have a fix in June.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Currently, Nissan is telling owners that the vehicle is safe to drive, but owners experiencing the issues disagree. Some owners are so concerned that they’re negotiating a buyback with their dealerships, which is understandable considering some have fewer than 1,000 miles before exhibiting the problems.

The shuddering sensation is being described by some forum members as “driving over a rumble strip” and typically occurs between 20 to 40 mph and the power loss lasts for three to four seconds.

Infiniti is considering an entry-level crossover that would slot below the current EX model and could be based on the Mercedes MFA platform that underpins the new CLA.

The crossover would sport the QX30 moniker if it comes to fruition and would resemble the Etherea concept. Given the Japanese automaker’s new nomenclature, the QX badge would be a fitting for the small crossover, rather than Q30 which was previously reported.

SEE ALSO: Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Formalize Platform Sharing, Small Car To Be First

Now, Mercedes-Benz’s MFA platform will also underpin its upcoming GLA, so it would be a natural fit for Infiniti’s entry-level crossover. It’ll be a relatively high-sitting car with a hatchback and would head to America if it’s produced. Rumor has it that Infiniti plans to build it at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK with a projected 60,000 units a year.

Viable powerplants include the 2.0-liter, turbo-four engine from Mercedes that is used in the CLA. Don’t be surprised if Infiniti tweaks it however, much like it did for the European-spec Q50.

Infiniti is working on an all-new Q30 model, which is expected to be launched in the next two years.

According to global boss Andy Palmer, the Q30 will sit “between the Audi A3 and Audi Q3″ landing it in a niche market made possible by a three-way adjustable ride height system.

One thing Palmer stressed however is that the Q30 won’t be a rehashed variant of the Nissan Qashqai (sold in Europe), but rather it’ll be a “car that can span established brackets within the market.” The Japanese automaker will base the Q30 off its Etherea concept (above) which debuted at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and proves that Nissan and Infiniti will continue to enjoy success in cross-established car segments.

In the same intervie, Palmer also revealed that Infiniti has no plans to build a flagship sedan larger than the current M model.

It may not be perfect but the United States is a great country. America has her share of problems, both past and present, but for the most part this nation is pretty sweet; when it comes to being awesome we’ve done better than most.

This land is your land, this land is my land; it’s home to freedom and possibility, abundance and Coney dogs. Hundreds of years ago the U.S. was courageous enough to stretch clear across an entire continent, bold enough to caress two oceans at the same time and smart enough to never let the other one find out.

That intrepid, flirtatious attitude is alive and well today. Americans boldly go where others refuse and tackle issues no one else will; we even tolerate hipsters and live-action roll-playing. If this roiling kettle of patriotism gets any closer to boiling over the AutoGuide Oracles’ ocular organs will erupt with tears of pride and thankfulness.

America is a land of endless expanses, suburbia and the open road. Our Interstate Highway System connects small towns with major population centers; it’s like an asphalt internet, an analog Cyb3rw3b. Thankfully the real net isn’t constructed of crumbling bridges and potholes.

Bumps, cracks and frost-heaves are an unfortunate reality of motoring in ‘Murica. With miles and miles of miles and miles it’s not always easy to maintain our infrastructure the way it should be. This necessity was the mother, or at least the wet nurse of invention; it spurred the wide-spread adoption of smooth-riding, comfortable cars. Traversing disintegrated pavement in a rough-riding sports car is hardly enjoyable, nor is having your adiposity quiver like a Doberman’s dewlap, hence the need for smoothness.

This week Bob dispatched a communiqué asking for assistance. He’s in the market for something that at first glance sounds like an automotive paradox. He wants a fuel-efficient large car. Generally big does not equal economical, but thanks to modern technology the two are no longer mutually exclusive.

Robert has between $25,000 and $40,000 to spend. He wants technology, lots of safety features and good fuel economy. Long-term reliability is critical as well since he plans on driving this vehicle into the ground. What’s a sedan fan to do? Where can a four-door aficionado turn for advice? He’s come to the right place.

Suggestion #1 – 2014 Chevrolet Impala

Right now Bob’s vehicular stable consists of a 2005 Subaru Outback and a ’95 Acura Legend. As you can tell he leans toward imported auto-mo-beels but he’s not totally opposed to Detroit iron. The last American car he owned was a ’66 Mustang, which likely provided a flurry of memories, but not necessarily all of them good. Corresponding via electronic mail he wrote he would consider a Big Three car if they really “knocked it out of the park.”

Just like his baseball reference, Chevrolet is about as American as it gets, never mind that it was founded by a Swiss-born Frenchman. Keeping our large-car tradition alive is the Bow-Tie brand’s redesigned Impala.

Long a staple of rental lots this full-size sedan has been completely transformed for the 2014 model year, going from fleet queen to prom queen. The previous car was the potted meat of the automotive world, cheap, mushy and of questionable origin, but the ’14 version is like surf and turf at a fine steakhouse.

The car’s exterior design has gone from anodyne to awesome, its interior municipal to magnificent. But there’s a whole lot more to this vehicle than just handsome styling. To keep up with its competition the new Impala can be loaded with enough high-tech safety and convenience features to make the Bill Gates apprehensive.

While the car has not been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) just yet it comes standard with 10 airbags, so it should be plenty safe. Like many new vehicles it will probably earn at least “Top Safety Pick” status, how could it not? There are more inflatable devices in the cabin than at a balloon-industry convention.

Helping lessen the driver’s burden 2014 Impalas offers all kinds of advanced assistance features. A collision-mitigation system, lane-departure and forward collision warning are but a few of the items available. It also comes with blind-spot alert, a backup camera and full-speed-range adaptive cruise control. If technology and safety are what Bob’s after this car is hard to top.

But wait, if you order in the next 15 weeks they’ll throw in six months of OnStar service, ABSOLUTELY FREE!

SEE ALSO: 2014 Chevrolet Impala Review

While not quite a Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors, buyers have three different options from to choose from in the engine room. The base powerplant is a 2.5-liter EcoTec four-cylinder. It’s thrifty and efficient, delivering 196 horsepower and up to 31 miles per gallon on the highway.

The biggest engine available is a 3.6-liter V6. It puts out a muscular 305 horses but is only slightly less efficient than the four-banger, offering up to 29 MPG on the open road, which is nothing to sneeze at.

For maximum efficiency a thrifty eAssist version will be offered toward the end of the year. The heart of this hybrid drivetrain is a 2.4-liter gasoline engine. Output is slightly less than the base four, but at 182 horsepower it’s not far off.

Where eAssist really shines is in the fuel economy department. Impalas equipped with this drivetrain should manage 25 miles per gallon in the city and up to 35 on expressway jaunts. Small cars from just five years ago had trouble delivering such impressive numbers.

Base price for a 2014 Chevrolet Impala with the 2.5-liter engine is about $27,500. That’s not too shabby for a large car with an attractive design, comfortable interior and 10 airbags. Throw in a ginormous trunk and impressive fuel economy and this Chevy can handle just about anything.

Suggestion #2 – 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “hybrid”? It’s probably Prius, and by extension Toyota. The Japanese auto-giant is practically synonymous with electrified vehicles, selling more of them than any other company.

Just like the Impala, Toyota’s Avalon has been completely transformed, going from dull to dreamy in one fell swoop. Every previous version of the car was critically boring, sleepier than nap time at Golden Sunset Retirement Community, though at least the Avalon’s seats remained dry.

Driving one of these antiquated Avalons was about as enjoyable as birthing a television set; one of those old-school rear-projection behemoths that were terrible at everything except taking up huge amounts of floor space.

Luckily for large-car customers the new Avalon is a revolutionary product for Toyota. It’s actually got swagger and presence; it no longer looks like a watered down Buick Lucerne, one of the blandest cars ever built. It’s the result of the company’s push to deliver more exciting, emotional products, and Toyota deserves a big pat on the back because they succeeded, but they didn’t ruin the car in the process.

Out on the road the Avalon, even in economy-minded hybrid trim delivers an engaging driving experience… for a large sedan. It’s no Scion FR-S, but it’s no longer a snooze-factory, either. The ride is smooth but the car still handles pretty well; it’s a nice balance.

It’s powered by a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that delivers just 156 horsepower, which sounds pitifully quaint, but this vehicle is full of surprises. It’s augmented by a 105 kW electric motor that’s amped up by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Total system power is more respectable at 200 ponies.

Despite its low horsepower rating the Avalon actually accelerates pretty briskly. Merging with fast-moving highway traffic is no problem, but efficiency is the Avalon’s trump card. The car promises an amazing 40 miles per gallon in urban driving and 39 on the interstate – numbers that quite simply destroy the Chevy’s Impala eAssist hybrid.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Review

In the unfortunate event of a crash the Avalon protects its occupants with an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating. The car has not been put through the fear-mongering organization’s new, and very rigorous small-overlap test.

When it comes to standard equipment the Avalon is offered with much of what you’d expect in a modern, large sedan. A moonroof is part of the deal as is a backup camera, rear-seat air vents and dual-zone automatic climate control with an air filter to keep pollution and allergens at bay, or at least out of the cabin.

The Avalon is an excellent large car, but greatness ain’t cheap. Chevy is happy to sell you a stripped-down Impala but the Avalon Hybrid is considerably richer than its domestic competitor. Base price for the car is a few hundred bucks more than $36,000, including shipping and handling. Of course that’s still within Bob’s budget but it’s close to the upper limit. Pricey or not the car does not disappoint.

Suggestion #3 – 2013 Subaru Outback

In an effort to pinpoint Bob’s automotive needs and desires we’ve explored some of the freshest options in the large-sedan segment. The Chevy Impala and Toyota Avalon both offer some compelling plusses and crippling minuses, but now it’s time for something completely different, a product so far out of left field it comes from first base. The vehicle in question is the Subaru Outback.

Toss an extra shrimp on the barbie, this Australian-themed crossover is a familiar option; Robby already has one from the exciting 2005 vintage in his automotive cellar (read: garage).

This crossover is a modern cure for station wagony. If you lust after a spacious vehicle with car-like dynamics this could be the answer to your vehicular prayers. It delivers fryer-basket full of features in a practical, efficient package, all without the stench of burnt oil… at least not for the first decade.

When it comes to schlepping the Outback is ready for action. With the rear seats folded it offers more than 71 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume. The best the Avalon can muster is just 14 cubes for luggage or other sundry miscellany.

Upholding Subaru’s commitment to quirkiness the Outback is powered by one of two boxer engines, a layout not used by many manufacturers. The base powerplant is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that posts 173 horsepower on its stat sheet. A 3.6-liter six-shooter is the up-level choice, delivering 256 horsepower.

To maximize fuel economy Bob has no choice but to go with the base engine and the optional continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is a $1,000 up-charge. On the highway this combo can stretch a gallon of gasoline up to 30 miles, a far cry from the Avalon Hybrid’s efficiency rating. A six-speed manual is the standard gearbox and the enthusiast’s choice.

Base price for an Outback so equipped is a little more than $24,000, making it a very strong value, especially when you factor in the standard all-wheel drive system. Unfortunately it falls short in the opulence department. Sure, it’s got a host of safety features from brake assist to side-curtain airbags, but Bob would probably want to spring for the limited model, which starts around 30 grand.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Subaru Outback Review

One options box he’d absolutely have to check is Subaru’s EyeSight system. This driver-assistance technology incorporates adaptive cruise control, land-departure warning and a pre-collision braking system that will stop the car automatically to avoid a crash. It comes bundled with a navigation system and adds about $4,000 to the price tag.

As for safety the Outback earned “Top Safety Pick +” honors meaning it’s better than the best, if that makes sense, which it shouldn’t since the IIHS is just trying to confuse people.

Unlike the region it’s named after the Subaru Outback is neither vast nor barren. It’s a smart-sized vehicle with lots of standard and optional equipment. G’day mate!

DISHONORABLE MENTION

What installment of Ask AutoGuide would be complete without some Dishonorable Mentions? These vehicles come close to the mark but aren’t quite worthy of a full recommendation. Think of them as good students trapped at community college.

The Ford Taurus is a large sedan with a stylish body and some interesting features. Buyers can choose between three different engines, from an economical four-cylinder to volume V6 to a fire-breathing twin-turbo; there’s something for everybody and every budget. For Bob we’d recommend a bull with the optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost powerplant. It delivers a responsive 240 horsepower and up to 32 MPG. The car is super safe but ultimately it’s let down by its space inefficiency. The passenger compartment is unacceptably cramped for one of the largest sedans on the road. Also, Ford’s fuel economy claims are likely to be bogus. The Taurus is a good car but not a great one.

The Volkswagen Passat is an intriguing option. When equipped with the optional diesel engine and a manual gearbox it delivers and EPA estimate of 43 MPG highway. With an 18.5-gallon fuel tank the car has a theoretical maximum range of nearly 800 miles! Past quality issues and a relative dearth of features hold the Passat back. Like the other cars discussed this installment of Ask AutoGuide it’s also a “Top Safety Pick,” as is the Taurus.

DOCTOR’S ORDERS

Bob is the patient this week and he needs a healthy dose of luxury, safety and long-term reliability. What’s the best car for him? Here’s our final report.

Let’s start with the Outback. This capacious Subaru offers cargo volume, decent fuel efficiency and a proven track record for quality. If Bob lives in an inclement-weather area standard all-wheel drive could be a godsend. But ultimately the Outback isn’t that opulent nor does it feel particularly special, plus he already owns one, so why buy another? It’s a terrific vehicle but we’re pushing for something else.

Unlike the Subaru, Chevy’s Impala is loaded with character. It’s a stylish and spacious large sedan that shares nothing with its rental-grade predecessor. The car’s very newness is highly appealing, but it’s also the vehicle’s greatest drawback. With no medical history on file we have no idea how the Impala will hold up, and Chevy isn’t exactly known for faultless reliability. Also, a full-size car named after an agile African antelope is as inappropriate as it is oxymoronic. This Chevy’s a looker and a great contender.

Of course that leaves one vehicle left, the Toyota Avalon Hybrid. This amped up sedan won everyone over with its combination of emotional styling, spacious interior and unassailable fuel economy. Its combined rating is 40 MPG! Throw in legendary Toyota reliability and you have a recipe for success, and victory in this week’s installment of Ask AutoGuide.

Heading to the show is a BMW X6 M50d designed as a medical car for the racetrack and a BMW X3 as a fire brigade. Those aren’t the only X models in attendance however, an X1 First Responder and an X3 will be on display as an emergency medical vehicle. Joining the SUV and crossovers are a 3 Series touring model as an emergency medical services vehicle, and a 5 Series Touring as a fire brigade command vehicle. There will also be a new F 800 GT motorcycle on display as a public authority variant.

These BMW emergency vehicles are designed hand-in-hand with specific equipment facilities and are carried out in close cooperation with the specialists from the respective public authorities and institutions. BMW technologies such as its ConnectedDrive, Night Vision, and Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) all benefit the services of firemen, emergency doctors, and rescue workers worldwide.
