“Soon” is quite possibly the least satisfying answer possible, yet we hear it countless times about exciting new cars.

Some get a green light and others are shelved in order to make resources for a variety of reasons. Here’s our list of cars that we’ve been hearing about for years only to be left twiddling our thumbs. Automakers swear they’re coming, but we just don’t know when.

AutoGuide hot-shoe Dave Pratte is headed to Newfoundland, Canada in September, piloting a Scion FR-S with fellow Speed.Academy Editor Peter Tarach during the grueling Targa Newfoundland tarmac rally.

In partnership with Scion Racing, Dave and Peter are rebuilding a hand-me-down FR-S from Scion Canada’s Tuner Challenge program, starting with a complete redo of its roll cage (the car was otherwise stock when they adopted it).

According to Dave, “Competing at Targa Newfoundland has been a long-standing dream of ours, and we’re doubly excited to be taking on this unique motorsports adventure in what we consider one of the top handling sports coupes on the market, the Scion FR-S. We’ve also partnered with some of the best performance parts manufacturers and distributors in the business as we prepare the FR-S for the extreme conditions it’ll face in Newfoundland, including KW Suspension, Rays Engineering, Whiteline, Recaro, Takata, Motovicity, Essex, SPEC, Tomei, Downforce USA, Spyder, and Alpinestars.”

Best of all, Dave and Peter will be installing all of the high-performance goodies themselves and documenting the entire process in a series of stories and videos here on AutoGuide. You can also check out their progress in the build thread they’ve started on FR-Sforum.com, and on their own website, Speed Academy.

As Peter put it, “Driving flat out on twisty public roads in a Scion FR-S is truly the stuff that car-guy dreams are made of. The fact that we get to modify our loaner FR-S ourselves also means we’ll be able to dial it in to our specific needs and style while forming that special man-and-machine bond every gearhead can relate to.”

As you’ll see in the first of their build videos, they got off to a bit of a rough start, but there should be smoother sailing (or wrenching) ahead. So stay tuned as these two grassroots speed junkies prep their FR-S for Targa Newfoundland, one of the toughest tests a road car is ever likely to face.

When these spy photos hit our inbox, we were skeptical right away.

In the photos we see a Toyota GT86 fitted with a carbon fiber hood, roof and trunk as well as a set of lightweight Volk wheels.

It certainly doesn’t look like any sort of production car and Toyota was quick to calm any suspicion. “I’m checking into this and will let you know if we can get any more specifics, but at this time, it’s not an official prototype,” Toyota spokeswoman Nancy Hubbell told us via e-mail.

However, our spy photographer has confirmed that the DAU 0684 plates are the official testplates that Toyota uses and that the car was spotted during an official test session for the car industry.

The Scion FR-S will return to this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Last year, driver Ken Gushi won the Exhibition Auto Class behind the wheel of the Lexus IS F CCS-R, but this year he’ll be driving into the cockpit of the Scion FR-S built by the GReddy Racing team. Gushi is familiar with the FR-S, as he professionally drifts the rear-wheel drive sports car in Formula Drift. This is the second appearance for the FR-S at Pikes Peak and it will be competing in the Time Attack 1 Division for production-based two- and four-wheel drive vehicles.

In the offseason, the Pikes Peak-bound FR-S has received numerous upgrades with the powerplant now producing 500 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the suspension has been retuned and new safety components have been added.

“No race on earth is quite like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and I can’t wait to conquer it in a car I love: the Scion FR-S,” Gushi said. “Every turn of this course requires the best performance out of the driver and vehicle, and racing fans will love what they see.”

The 92nd annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb starts on June 29.

Though it could improve performance, a Scion FR-S hybrid is unlikely.

Speaking in an interview with Autocar, Toyota marketing director Fabio Capano stated that the Japanese automaker can surely create a GT86 (FR-S) with hybrid technology, but such a model “needs to make proper business sense.” In other words, Toyota believes an FR-S hybrid doesn’t speak to the majority and would be a poor seller on the market.

As a result, Toyota will be focusing its efforts elsewhere, rather than investing into creating an FR-S hybrid that would ultimately appeal to a small market while incurring quite a bit of cost.

Hybrid sports cars aren’t entirely out of the picture however, as the company is co-developing a larger sports car with BMW that will likely take advantage of a Le Mans-derived hybrid powertrain to enhance its performance.

Toyota’s struggling Scion brand will soon get some much needed new product, with an insider confirming a new hatchback will be added to the lineup as well as a product the brand has never before offered, a sedan.

The hatchback, AutoGuide has learned, is likely to be a version of the Toyota Auris. In many ways this function-focused hatchback will be a spiritual successor to the Toyota Matrix.

The second generation Auris was introduced to the European and Japanese markets in 2013 and is available with all-wheel drive as an option.

Perhaps more surprising is the addition of a conventional sedan to the youth-focused brand’s lineup. That car will actually be based on the upcoming next-gen Mazda2 platform.

Past  reports have indicated the next-generation Yaris will also be based off the Mazda2 and will even use a Mazda engine. Production of the next-generation Mazda2 will begin at the company’s new plant in Salamanca, Mexico in mid-2015.

Our source also confirmed that there are more new products in the pipeline beyond those, with continued rumors pointing towards a small crossover. A convertible version of the FR-S has also long been reported to be in the pipeline.

Scion execs have repeatedly been clear that new Scion models will not necessarily be a replacement of a current model but could be entirely new products while older nameplates, like the xB or xD could be shelved entirely.

The first of the new Scion models is expected to make its debut at the LA Auto Show in November.

Toyota is adding some upgrades to the Scion FR-S for the 2015 model year, which will bump the base price up by $200 to $25,655.

To help improve handling, Scion is installing a more rigid front suspension and re-tuning the rear shock absorbers to reduce body roll and increase the responsiveness of the car. A shark fin antenna has been added to improve aerodynamics and the exhaust tips are now larger and are more flush with the rear bumper.

On the inside, a new dashboard panel with a carbon fiber look has been added along with a new key design and automatic headlights.

Despite complaints about lack of power, the engine is still a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine 200 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.

Pricing for the FR-S starts at $25,655 including destination, which gets you a manual transmission model. Bumping up to the automatic brings the price to $26,755.

Rumors of the Scion FR-S (Toyota GT86) family growing are back on the table.

A new report from Motoring.com.au cites unnamed sources in Japan that claim Toyota has put the GT 86 convertible and sedan models back under consideration, along with turbocharged and hybrid variants. Rumor has it that the convertible model will join the lineup as early as this year while the sedan model won’t make its debut until 2016. According to the report, the FR-S sedan will offered turbocharged and all-wheel drive, in addition to a turbo-hybrid powertrain.

SEE ALSO: Toyota FT86 Previews a Scion FR-S Convertible… Again

Since the sedan will be larger and heavier, the Japanese automaker is preparing two powertrains to ensure sufficient performance. The flagship model will utilize Subaru’s Direct Injection Turbo (DIT) engine in the form of a 2.0-liter for Japan and 2.5-liter for other markets. It is likely that the turbocharged engine will be good for close to 300 hp. Toyota could be plannig to offer the turbo powerplant in the coupe model as part of a mid-cycle refresh.

Toyota will supposedly use in-wheel electric motors to power the front wheels to offer all-wheel drive capability and will use a hybrid powertrain that is compatible with Subaru’s direct injected boxer engine but more powerful than the system being used in the XV Crosstrek hybrid.

Scion Canada has just announced a motorsports contingency program for 2014 that’s so aggressive, it will literally pay owners just for showing up.

In anything from drifting, to auto-x to full-on road racing the program will pay between $100 to $800 for a first place finish. But even if you come in dead last, there’s no walking away empty handed. Scion will actually pay Canucks anywhere from $40 to $350 (depending on the event type), just for participating.

To be eligible to receive an award, drivers must compete against three or more eligible competitors. The four types of motorsports that Scion Canada is supporting include: Autoslalom ($40 participation, $100 first place), Time Attack ($125 participation, $350 first place), Road Racing ($350 participation, $800 first place) and Drifting ($75 participation, $200 first place).

This year, drivers can claim up to five payments for first-place finishes and/or participation.

“The Scion Racing Contingency Program has only been in existence for two years, but we have already made a major contribution to grassroots motorsports in Canada,” said Cyril Dimitris, Director of Scion Canada. “We look forward to continuing the momentum in 2014 for this exceptional program. As part of its evolution, we’re pleased to announce changes to the payout ratio to better reward racers who demonstrate a higher level of participation.”

What’s wrong with the Scion FR-S? According to one Nissan exec, it’s too slow.

Hardly the first person to make that statement, it’s always a surprise when an automaker criticizes the products of one of its rivals. In this case it may also shed some light on Nissan’s future sports car plans.

“Do you still think the FR-S is an old man car,” we asked Nissan North America VP of Product Planning Pierre Loing during an interview at the New York Auto Show. A reference to previous comments by the Japanese automaker’s executive vice president, Andy Palmer, who said the compact sports car was a “midlife crisis” car “designed for a 50-year-old,” Loing was frank in his response.

“It needs more power,” were his parting words before scooting off to another interview.

SEE ALSO: More Nismo Models Coming Says Nissan Product Boss

Previous to that, Loing was less than open on the brand’s plans for its next-generation of sports cars, though he did provide some hints at the future. He described the two opposing sports car formulas, the first of being a car with a big engine and equally big horsepower ratings. This concept he referred to as “US centric,” commenting that such a car, “becomes almost unsellable in Europe and China because of CO2.” He even admitted that the appeal of such cars is dwindling in the US saying that, “it still sells in the US, but not in as big of numbers as it used to in the early 2000s.”

Commenting that the big horsepower, big engine philosophy is, “the current recipe of Z,” the alternative is a smaller vehicle with a lower displacement engine utilizing turbocharging. “We are still studying between those two,” said Loing, though it would appear the decision for the latter has already been made.

The next-gen Z car can’t shrink too much, however, as Nissan has reportedly given the green-light to push its IDx concept into production. That car could make use of a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylidner making around 200 hp.

As for the FR-S, Scion has announced no plans to upgrade the 200 hp 4-cyllinder engine in the car, despite rumors of turbocharging and hybridizing, or even just swapping in a larger displacement 2.5-liter unit.

The Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ are all the same car, but each is not created equal depending on where in the world they will be sold.

In the European market, the Toyota GT86 is getting some better suspension parts for the 2015 model year, which may eventually find their way into the North American Scion FR-S.

The improvements include stiffer mounts for the front suspension and rear shock absorbers, along with new rear shocks for improved damping and less friction. Toyota claims that this will give the car sharper steering and less body roll.

These advances were announced specifically for the European market, but Toyota is considering bringing these changes to the Scion FR-S as well. “The European changes are among those being considered for the US model FR-S and we’ll have final confirmation soon,” Toyota spokeswoman Nancy Hubell told Autoblog.
