At the recent Montreal International Auto Show, Kia Canada rolled out a new turbocharged version of the Sportage crossover.

Currently available in only LX and EX trim levels, this new SX model uses the same 2.0L turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine found in the new Hyundai Sonata Turbo. No engine specifics have been provided, but in the Sonata it makes 274-hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, which should help this compact crossover really fly.

In the Sonata, that engine makes 22/33-mpg (city/highway) so we expect similar numbers in the Sportage SX.

Standard equipment on the SX trim includes items like a Smart Key Push Button start, Panoramic Sunroof, 18-inch wheels, Driver Ventilated Seat, EVO Infotainment System, 7-speaker audio system and SX Leather Seating.

Arriving at dealers soon, the Sportage SX is priced from $36,995 in Canada. We expect a U.S. version to arrive soon, and this also raises the possibility that the Tucson will get the 2.0T engine.

Mercedes C63 AMG Affalterbach 01.jpg

Mercedes has just announced a new limited edition version of its high-performance C63 AMG model at the Montreal Auto Show. Limited to just 30 units, the C63 AMG Affalterbach Edition was designed at AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany.

Finished in a unique MAGNO Allanite Grey (matte gray), the C63 gets custom black AMG 19-inch wheels with red AMG brakes, as well as carbon fiber mirror housings and a rear lip spoiler on the trunk.

Inside, the interior gets reworked with custom leatherwork with the Affalterbach logo on the headrests, while red stitching adds even more style to the Nappa leather sport seats. There’s an Affalterbach logo on the gearshift, plus an AMG carbon fiber package, not to mention special AMG floormats. And of course, each model gets its own Affalterbach Edition badge identifying exactly which of the 30 it is.

The 6.2-liter V8 gets the AMG Performance Package, upping power to 481-hp and delivering a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds, while also adding on a limited slip differential and deleting the top speed limiter.

The price of $81,500 (CDN dollars) seems hard to swallow at first when you consider the base C63 costs $63,600, when you add on that AMG Package plus the included Premium Package and you’re already at 76,900. So really, it’s a small price to pay for some nice paint and a lot of exclusivity.

2012 Hyundai Accent_14.jpg

Hot on the heels of the debut of the Veloster at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Hyundai has unwrapped the all-new 2012 Accent at the Montreal Auto Show. This comes as a surprise as Hyundai Motor America had said the car wouldn’t break cover until the New York Auto Show in April.

A vehicle that made its name in the industry as being a low cost option for those on a budget, Hyundai aims to keep that price structure while out-doing the competition in every other aspect.

Keeping the same styling seen on the Sonata and the new Elantra, the 2012 Accent is powered by a direct-injection 138-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that makes 123 ft-lbs of torque and according to the Canadian press release gets 4.7 L/100 km highway and 6.4 L/100 km regardless of whether you choose the 6-speed automatic or manual. That works out to an incredible 50-mpg highway and 37-mpg city. (Those numbers are, however, imperial and in the U.S. you’re looking at closer to 41-mpg and 30.5 mpg).

Having grown in size, the new Accent is now 70mm (2.7-inches) longer between the wheels and 5mm wider. This not only makes for added interior space, but the Accent also delivers a sizable amount of cargo volume with 14 cu-ft of trunk space with the sedan and 17.2 cu-ft with the hatch. Despite all this, weight was kept to a minimum, with the new Accent sedan weighing just 2,392 lbs, while the hatchback model is slightly heavier at 2,429 lbs.

NISMO370Z(9).jpg

Sure we don’t get the special edition Mitsubishi EVOs with even more horsepower, or the Civic Type R, but things could be worse: you could live in Canada. That’s right, while many high-performance vehicles have been denied to us, our friends to the North have had to do without Nissan‘s 370Z NISMO.

But that’s about to change with the announcement by Nissan Canada that it will debut the higher-performance Z at the upcoming Montreal Auto Show, going on sale later this year as a 2012 model. The car has already been on sale for a full model year in the U.S.

With 350-hp the NISMO edition car gets an increase of 18 ponies over the stock Z. Torque is also up, but just slightly, to 276 ft-lbs – an increase of 6 ft-lbs. Power is also achieved at a higher rpm with the 3.7-liter V6 strung-out to 7400 rpm to acheive maximum horsepower, as opposed to the stock cars, 7000 rpm max power level. And possibly better than the added power (for those who really appreciate track days) is a standard limited slip differential.

To give the car even better track performance, Nissan stiffened up the chassis with special “body dampers” on the front frame rail and below the rear cargo area. And of course, the car comes with a NISMO springs and a big NISMO strut tower bars front and rear.

Larger brakes are also included and sit inside a set of amazing looking 19-inch NISMO wheels. Manufactured by RAYS forged, the new wheels measure 19×9.5-inches up front and 19×10.5-inches in the rear with front 245/40/19 tires and rear 285/35/19 tires.

As mentioned earlier, the NISMO Z does get some styling additions, although they are more than just aesthetic. The new front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper and rear spoiler are all functional, reducing lift on the front axle and increasing downforce in the rear.

Inside, the NISMO branding is obvious with the name stitched onto the special seats made of a grippy fabric. Also inside the cabin can be found plenty of red stitching and some nice NISMO gauges.

Along with the introduction of the NISMO Z, Nissan will also give both the Leaf EV and the new 2011 GT-R their Canadian debuts at the Montreal show.
