Audi officially unveiled its 2013 RS4 Avant today at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

The powerful-but-practical station wagon is powered by the same naturally-aspirated 4.2-liter V8 as the RS5 coupe, making 450 hp and 317 fl-lbs of torque. The car’s top speed is intentionally limited to 155 mph, though customers may request that be raised to 174 mph in case they’re worried that time for grocery runs may be short.

The RS4 Avant comes with permanent Quattro all-wheel drive, as is true with every car bearing the RS badge, though the rear wheels get more power via a 40:60 ratio to deliver a sportier feel.

Audi used aluminum in much of the chassis to save weight, including components in the five-link suspension and trapezoidal rear-link suspension.

Customers may choose between the standard 19-inch wheels or the 20-inch versions shown above.

It wasn’t so long ago that such numbers would drum up serious excitement, but the RS4 will probably face stiff competition in the near future against the BMW M3. The two cars have similar power ratings now, but the Bimmer is close to a refresh and likely to get similar turbo-treatment as other cars from the Bavarian automaker have recently received.

Then again, the more conservative nature could easily be more appealing to mature clients who crave power and family compatibility all in one car.

Yesterday, the new Audi RS4 Avant leaked on the Internet ahead of its 2012 Geneva Motor Show debut, and now the German automaker has made the new high-performance wagon official along with its specifications.

The third-generation RS4 Avant will come with a 4.2L V8 powerplant with 450-hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. It is confirmed that it will come mated to a seven-speed S tronic transmission with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. It’s the same powerplant that can be found in the current RS5 Coupe with a 0-62 mph time of 4.7 seconds and a limited top speed of 155-mph, that can be raised to almost 174-mph upon request. According to Audi, the 4.2L V8 will get 25.7 combined miles per gallon.

Standard on the RS4 Avant will be polished 19-inch wheels while 20-inchers will be available as an option. The front receives 14.4-inch rotors with eight-piston calipers giving it astonishing braking performance. An option is available with 15-inch carbon fiber ceramic discs with six-piston anthracite gray calipers.

Compared to the standard A4 Avant, the RS4 is 0.79-inch longer, 0.94-inch wider, and 0.79-inch lower. Eight colors will be available, one solid, one metallic, four pearls, and two specially pigmented crystal-effect shades. For the interior, Audi has adorned it completely in black save for the roofliner that can come in an optional Moon Silver.

The RS4 Avant is scheduled to hit dealerships in Germany starting in fall of 2012 with a starting price of $100,300 (€76,600) based on today’s conversion rates.

The new Audi RS4 Avant wasn’t meant to be seen until the upcoming 2012 Geneva Motor Show, but photos already leaked onto the internet, big surprise.

Much of the wagon’s styling is what we can expect from Audi’s design language, with an elegant yet sporty design. It sports an updated front end featuring a honeycomb grille and larger air intakes.

In the rear, Audi equipped the new RS4 Avant with a tailgate-mounted spoiler, a new rear bumper with a diffuser sporting a pair of exhaust tips. As expected, it also comes with LED-equipped headlights, high-performance brakes, matte aluminum accents, and 19-inch wheels.

It appears that the interior will come with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, carbon fiber trim, and aluminum pedals.

It’s expected that the Audi RS4 Avant will come with a 4.2L V8 powerplant with 444-hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, mated to Audi’s dual-clutch S-tronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive system. Our biggest question, however, is still unanswered: will it come to the U.S.? German companies are often hesitant to bring their hatchbacks to American soil, and this doesn’t have much of a reason to be different, but we’re paying attention nonetheless.
