With a recent refresh BMW is already testing its next-generation X5 SUV – or Sports Activity Vehicle as they like to call it. Code named the F15, the new X5 will ride on a modified version of the current vehicle’s platform, although it is expected to undergo significant weight savings. The use of lighter materials is expected in order to drop several hundred pounds and keep up with rivals.

This weight reduction is expected to help cut fuel consumption significantly, as will continually improved engines. Both turbocharged six and eight cylinder engines are expected, as well as a diesel, hybrid and X5 M models. If the weight reduction plan is significant enough BMW may even be able to utilize its new turbocharged 4-cylinder.

Look for the new BMW X5 to head into production at the brand’s Spartanburg, SC plant in late 2013 and hit dealers shortly thereafter as a 2014 model year vehicle.
