Here are the facts: the Ford Mustang will continue into the future and there will be a Shelby GT500 version available with the redesign. Beyond that, details are foggier than a seasoned weatherman’s report. 

Still, we know that the Mustang hasn’t been selling well recently. In fact, it’s been out-sold by the Chevrolet Camaro for two years running. Speculating far into a car’s future is difficult if not downright silly, but people probably wouldn’t have predicted such a fall from grace.

Remember the Ford Mustang SVO with it’s turbocharged engine? The Blue Oval might just dust off that old badge for a new forced induction ‘Stang, but it won’t be a turbo 4-cylinder. In fact, with earlier confirmation that the Mustang will get an Ecoboost engine, it might not be a version of the SHO’s twin-turbo 3.5L V6 either.

Instead, there’s another option for Ford, with an announcement that the company’s Lima, Ohio, engine plant will build a small displacement V6. But an EcoBoost V6? Perhaps.

While Ford won’t confirm any details the new mill is expected to be in the 2.5L to 3.0L range, with power around 300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. After all, output would have to sit somewhere between the EcoBoost 2.0L with 247-hp and 266 lb-ft and the 3.5L V6 with 365-hp and 420 lb-ft. Along with the Mustang, the new small EcoBoost V6 could replace all 3.5L and 3.7L V6 engines in everything from the Fusion to the Taurus, as well as the Edge, Explorer, F-150 and yes, even the Mustang.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, an all-new Ford Mustang will go on sale in early 2014 as a 2015 model year car indicate recent reports. This will coincide with the timing of the original Mustang’s on sale date back in 1964.

Big things are reportedly brewing for the Mustang and its rumored to finally get an independent rear suspension. In addition, look for a smaller rear-drive platform that could help the Stang shed some weight, further transforming it from a muscle car to a true sports car. While still not a global car, look for Ford to further expand sales of the Mustang, with a model planned for right-hand drive countries like the UK, Australia and Japan.

As for the look, Ford chief designer J Mays has previously indicated it will be something new, and not just an evolution of the current retro-themed model.

Until then, look for an updated Mustang to bow next year as a 2013 model year car, with the 2013 Shelby GT500 reportedly getting 650-hp from a turbocharged V8.

The folks over at InsideLine have received a few interesting pics of a Ford Mustang test car, speculating that it could be an EcoBoost GT model. There are good reasons for the story, but there are stronger reasons against it.

For: The car sports a front bumper that looks designed to work with an intercooler. Inside the car there’s a “premium fuel only” sticker and a tachometer that stops at an alarmingly high 9000 rpm. Plus, Ford has said the EcoBoost technology will end up in almost all of its vehicles, and they already have a rear-drive versions – as found in the current 2011 F-150.

Against: The biggest fault with the EcoBoost V6 suggestion is that it would never hit 9000 rpm. Currently, in cars like the Taurus SHO it makes peak power of 365-hp at just 5500 rpm.

While we don’t want to ignore the intercooler idea, might we suggest an even higher revving 5.0-liter V8, pushing power closer to the 450-hp mark.

Ford is likely to deliver an EcoBoost Mustang, but it will likely be as a third option, sitting between the traditional V6 and V8.

The next-generation Mustang, that’s set to debut in 2013 as a 2014 model and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic American sports car will leave behind its current styling in favor of a bold new direction says Ford‘s global design boss. In a recent interview with Mustangs Daily at the launch of the new Focus ST at the Paris Auto Show, global design head Jay Mays hinted at the progressive new styling planned for the “pretty cool” new Mustang.

“It can’t lose the Mustang DNA, but it will have to signal that Mustang has another 50 years of life left in it,” he said. “In order to do that we’re going to have to take a bit more of a stretch with the car.”

Mays wouldn’t comment further, but did say the Mustang, like the F-150, would retain its own styling direction apart from the rest of the global vehicle lineup.

Hinting at a more future-proof design, it’s also believed the 2014 Mustang will feature an independent rear suspension that would take the already best-in-class package to a whole new level.

Report: 2014 Ford Mustang to Get Independent Rear Suspension

Future Mustang may go global targeting cars like the BMW M3

Ford is planning an independent rear suspension (IRS) for the next-generation Mustang. Due out in 2014, this next model will celebrate 50 years of the iconic pony car.

The news comes from Motor Trend after discussions with several Ford execs and one unnamed company insider. It is also based on several assumptions, which include the fact that a new global independent rear end platform is in the works after Ford canceled plans for a different rear-drive independent platform that was to underpin the Mustang, next generation Ford Falcon (in Australia) and an upcoming Lincoln model.

A new Mustang-based IRS platform would mean that the Falcon and Lincoln models would be canceled – which Ford has indicated is already the case for the Falcon, a model that has seen sales slum considerably over the past several years.

In order to make a new IRS platform affordable, Ford would have to take the Mustang global. While this does meet with Ford’s new One Ford approach for global platforms, in our recent discussions with Ford marketing boss Jim Farley, he indicated that the Mustang wasn’t likely to ever become a global seller.

Many of the details are still unclear and the report suggests the next Mustang may simply be an evolution of the current car or that it may go in two other very-different directions. The first would be along the lines of the BMW M3, shrinking the size of the car and using a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. The second would be to take the car to an almost exotic level and take on cars like the Nissan GT-R.
