When Porsche returns to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in search of its 17th overall victory in 2014 the famed German sports car maker could rely on hybrid power to do so admits motorsports boss Hartmut Kristen.

Commenting in a release issued by Porsche on its return to the top-tier of sports car racing and the future of the program, Kristen said that, “the integration of our hybrid technology in the vehicle concept is one possible option.” Kristen is cautions, however, admitting that the entire plan would rely on exactly what the rules allow, but you can be certain Porsche is already lobbying the sport’s governing body.

Currently the LMP1 class is dominated by Audi’s R18 diesel race cars, with the only serious rivals coming from Peugeot with diesel technology as well. The reason for their success is fuel economy, with the diesels taking fewer pit stops to refuel. Porsche has already proven with its GT3 R Hybrid race car that it can achieve similar success using hybrid technology, taking the overall win in round four of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship by requiring one fewer pit stop than the rest of the field. the GT3 R Hybrid uses a modified version of the original GT3 R hybrid powertrain, making 470-hp from a naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine, with an additional 200-hp of electric boost available on demand.

Baring a miracle breakthrough in internal combustion engine technology between now and 2014, look for Porsche to take to the the LMP1 class with a hybrid race car.

Perhaps the bigger question would then be who Porsche will compete against. While Audi is the dominant force in the series right now it’s unlikely the two will square off on the track, considering they are both owned by Volkswagen. Does Porsche’s LMP1 success depend on the end of the Audi program?

Audi R8 Limited Edition Le Mans 01.jpg

To celebrate its 10th win at the 24 Hour of Le Mans, Audi has announced a new Limited Edition version of its R8 exotic sports car. Complete with plenty of standard equipment, like the magnetic ride suspension, Bang and Olufsen audio system and  navigation, what really sets this R8 apart is the custom interior and an exclusive paint option.

The cockpit is decorated with Black Nappa leather with crimson red accenting. Red stitching is also used on the seats and flat-bottom steering wheel, while plenty of crimson red leather is used to decorate other cabin details. Also included are custom floor mats, aluminum pedals and illuminated door sills with the R8 logo.

Outside, owners can opt for a special Titanium Matallic paint (at no extra cost), while other upgrades include 19-inch wheels, similar to those on the R8 GT, with red brake calipers. An exterior Carbon Package can also be added.

The Limited Edition model will be available only as a V8 with the 4.2-liter engine making the same 430-hp, with a 0-60 mph time of around 4.5 seconds.

The famous 1991 24-Hours of Le Mans winner, the Mazda 787B will be featured at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Ex-Formula 1 driver and Le Mans veteran Mike Wilds and current Mazda works driver Mark Ticehurst will be racing the 787B up the hallowed Goodwood hill for the festival this weekend. The race car returns to mark the 20th anniversary of its famous victory in the demanding 24-Hours of Le Mans.

The 787B will race brands like Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus and BMW in this year’s Britcar Dunlop Production GTN Championship.

Mazda’s 787B made history in 1991 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by becoming the first Japanese car to win the event. It’s victory lap was also its last as after 1991, rotary engines could not participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Mazda is still the only Japanese car manufacturer to win Le Mans.

The 787B is powered by a 700-hp rotary engine which has a top speed of 210mph.

The 787B will also join the MX-5 GT race car which is powered by a 275-hp 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine featuring a six-speed sequential paddle-shift gearbox, carbonfibre doors and polycarbonate windows. The car has a kerb weight of just 850kg and can accelerate from 0-60mph in just three seconds.

Automotive giant Toyota has achieved just about everything it has ever set out to do, however there is one goal that has eluded this Japanese car firm thus far, winning the Le Mans 24-hour race.

Since this famous, annual race began in 1923, Mazda is the only Japanese car company to have won this prestigious race (in 1991). Toyota had tried to conquer the ‘Circuit de la Sarthe’ in both 1998 and 1999 with the GT-One (pictured), and while they had an extremely quick race car, its fuel consumption and some technical issues prevented it from getting to the top of the podium.

The latest rumors now suggest that Toyota will be back at Le Mans next year with a new LMP1 category racer, and it will feature hybrid technology. Race car constructor Dome is said to be building the car for Toyota.

There is no official word yet on Toyota’s entry and all Vincent Beaumesnil (sporting manager of Le Mans and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest) has said thus far is:  “We are in contact with many manufacturers who are interested in LMP1, not just Toyota.”

So only time will tell if Toyota truly is once again going after the Le Mans crown. We’ll keep you posted on this developing story.

One of the most hallowed racetracks in the world recently got an electric shave, and not just from a weedwhacker. The Nissan Leaf NISMO RC, which debuted at the New York Auto Show a few months prior, finally got a thrashing around the Circuit de la Sarthe. It was quiet, yet not entirely unexciting.

Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer Carlos Tavares was behind the wheel of the electric race car, for an event called the “Le Mans vers le futur” that attempts to take the oxymoron out of the phrase “electric race car.”

Click the jump for the video, and skip ahead to 3:00 where things really start to get lively. And if you’re wondering, it took Tavares 22 minutes to lap the track, or about the same about of time it took Duncan Hamilton to get completely smashed on brandy Alexanders.

Marking the 20th anniversary of Mazda‘s victory in the world’s most demanding endurance race, the 24 Hour of Le Mans, Mazda has brought the winning Mazda 787B back from the dead.

Mazda’s 787B made history in 1991 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by becoming the first Japanese car to win the event. It’s victory lap was also its last as after 1991, rotary engines could not participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Jonny Herbert, who was behind the wheel 20 years ago, donned his nomex and racing helmet once again to hit the track. Mazda racer and TV star Patrick Dempsey also got a chance behind the wheel. This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans has only just finished (and what a race it was), but some teams are already making plans for 2012. No, we’re not talking about Audi or Corvette Racing, but a newcomer to the series, GreenGT. And the team won’t just be piloting a new car, but a whole new method of getting around the track, with the GreenGT LMP H2 race car an electric vehicle.

The ACO (Automobile Club de L’Ouest), which is responsible for the Le Mans race, has confirmed the car will compete in an experimental race class, meaning it won’t be up against the top dogs, but it will be racing, using a hydrogen-powered electric engine which is expected to make around 402-hp and what will likely be more torque than the whole rest of the field put together.

Unconvinced? Check out the video of the car testing on track after the jump:

Audi has re-affirmed its dominance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, clinching its 10th overall victory at the race, with all of those titles coming in the past 12 years. Rather than the outright mastery we’ve seen in the past, the odds were against Audi this time around with two-time champ Allan McNish ending his run at the title just an hour into the race with a spectacular crash. (Watch the video here).

During the 8th hour of the race near-tragedy struck again for Audi with the No. 1 car driven by Mike Rockenfeller careening into a guardrail in an impact so violent it split the car in two. In fact, it brought out a two hour caution period as teams worked to reconstruct the track’s safety barriers.

For the next 16 hours the Audi Sport Team Joest No. 2 car driven by Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer held off a trio of diesel-powered Peugeots to take the win, with the nearest Peugeot crossing the finish line 13 seconds behind the lone Audi R18.

In the hotly contested GTEPro class, it was Corvette Racing rising to the challenge. The No. 74 Compuware Corvette C6.R took the lead in the first hour of the race and held onto it until a crash in with under six hours to go. The crash placed AF Corse’s Ferrari F458 Italia in the lead, which was then overtaken by the No. 73 Corvette with three hours to go. Driving duties were shared by Antonio Garcia, Tommy Milner and Olivier Beretta – with this latest victory at Le Mans being his sixth.

In case you missed it, check out the video of Allan McNish’s crash after the jump:

Allan McNish’s chances of a third overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans were over in the first hour of the race, after a spectacular crash destroyed his car and looked to have perhaps ended his driving days forever. Miraculously, however, McNish managed to walk away from the incident seemingly unharmed. The same goes for bystanders who avoided the flying shrapnel of the Audi R18 race car as it slammed into the tire wall after clipping a Ferrari on the Dunlop Curves.

Honda is truly out to prove a point that CR-Z owners can have their cake and eat it too. This isn’t the first time we’ve spotted Honda’s CR-Z Racer, created by Honda Performance Development (HPD). The vehicle debuted at SEMA 2010 and hit the track at the Thunderhill 25 Hours. And now it’ll show its stuff in front of a huge crowd at one of the most famed races in motorsports, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The CR-Z Racer still features the standard 1.5L hybrid powerplant but HPD has added a turbocharger giving the CR-Z 200-hp and 175 ft-lbs of torque. Clearly Honda’s goal is to market the CR-Z to both performance enthusiasts and those looking to save money with maximum MPG while still having a stylish coupe. This HPD CR-Z racer truly shows off some racing solutions specifically targeted towards hybrid vehicles. We’ll be very curious to see how it performs out at Le Mans in its demonstration laps.

Several weeks back Mazda announced it would return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, showcasing its 787B race car, which took the overall win back in 1991.

Now the Japanese automaker has announced that driving the car will be done other than McDreamy himself, Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey. While best known for his acting, Dempsey is more than just a gentleman racer having competed in motorsports for years and even founding his own racing team. While rumor is his Grey’s days are over, perhaps he should look to a full time career in motorsports, after his third place finish at this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona showed just how skilled behind the wheel he is. Dempsey will squeeze the “at speed” laps into his schedule, racing his Dempsey Racing Mazda RX-8 at Watkins Glen the week before, and then heading to Watkins Glen for the next round of the Grand-Am series.

“I’ve been a member of the Mazdaspeed family since 2007,” said Dempsey.  “I race a three-rotor RX-8 in Grand-Am GT competition, and Mazda allowed me to drive the amazing RX-792P at Mazda Raceway last year. I love the heritage of the sport, and to be given the chance to drive THE car that scored the highest-visibility win in Mazda’s storied racing history is indeed an honor.”

With that win back in 1991 Mazda became the first Japanese automaker to win outright at Le Mans, a record Honda, Toyota or Nissan have yet to match.

In addition, Johnny Herbert, who helped drive the 787B to victory in 1991 will also take laps in the 700-hp four-rotor race car.

Possibly one of the most infamous Porsche race teams in the world, Flying Lizard has paid homage to Porsche racing history with their newest livery on their first-ever two-car line up for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. Their #80 911 GT3 RSR will be campaigned in the GTE Pro class while their #81 car will be in the GTE Am class. Three drivers will be appointed to each vehicle for the 24 hour race with Jorg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Lucas Luhr in the #80 car while Darren Law, Seth Neiman and Spencer Pumpelly will be in the #81 racer.

The livery was done by Troy Lee, famous for amazing paint styles on helmets and sports an orange-and-blue scheme that pays homage to the 1970 J.W. Automotive Gulf 917 Kurzchecks that were made famous by Steve McQueen’s Le Mans. Unique to the scheme are the names and flags of all the drivers who have taken overall victories at the famed Le Mans race while campaigning a Porsche.

Overall the scheme is very eye-catchy and should look great out on the track. The contrast of the two race cars is a real nice touch.

Marking the 20th anniversary of Mazda‘s victory in the world’s most demanding endurace race, the 24 Hour of Le Mans, Mazda has brought the winning Mazda 787B back from the dead.

Since winning in 1991, the Mazda 787B has been on display at the Mazda Museum in Horishima, Japan. The car has been carefully restored since its last 1991 post race overhaul, to open for the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans. The 79th annual race begins Saturday June 11 at 3 p.m. Additionally, the 787B will also take part in the Driver’s Parade through the Le Mans City center on Friday 10.

The 787B was powered by a four-rotor rotary engine that produced 700-hp. The 787B was the first and only Japanese car to win the 24 Hour of Le Mans. After 1991, rotary engines could not participate in the 24 Hour of Le Mans.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, members of the 1991 Mazda team will also return to Le Mans. The winning driver Johnny Herbert (England) will be joined by 1991 Mazda drivers David Kennedy (Ireland), Pierre Dieudonné (Belgium) and other team members.

With the anticipation growing for Audi‘s R18 LMP1 race car to hit the track competitively, Audi is probably wishing it’ll happen sooner themselves. After losing out at the 12 Hours of Sebring, Audi may be looking forward to getting the R18 out on the track in order to replace the current R15 race cars.

Two of the R18s were first test-driven at Sebring along with an R15 as a control car and all ten Audi racing drivers were involved in the testing program. Currently they’re on their way to Europe and will be torn apart and analyzed by Audi Sport in Ingolstadt.

Their next appearance will be at the famous Le Mans racetrack and will compete for the first time in the six hour race in Spa-Francorchamps.

Official press release available after the break.

Nissan fans will rejoice at the brand’s return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans race this year.

The Japanese automaker has just announced a partnership with Signature Racing out of France that will see the team use Nissan Motorsports (NISMO) 4.5-liter V8 engines in high-level LMP2 prototype cars.

But before the big race in France, Nissan will debut the car at the 12 Hours of Sebring, in Sebring, FL on March 19th. The car is also set to return to our shores for the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta later this year.

With Mad Men setting off a slew of imitators producing 1960′s period pieces on network television, Ridley and Tony Scott, the two brothers collectively responsible for works like Top Gun and Gladiator, are apparently forging ahead with plans for a movie set in the 1960s, but with a motor racing theme.

“I grew up in the North of England at a time when Stirling Moss was a hero.Everyone wanted to be a racing driver. This is a hugely ambitious project and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tell the story of these iconic and legendary men who risked everything to win at Le Mans. It’s an epic story of courage and ambition and a history of racing which has never been told on such a grand scale,” Ridley Scott told Deadline.

Considering the uber-high production values and budgets that usually accompany one of the brothers movies, we literally cannot wait to see what transpires. The 1960′s were some of the best days of motorsports and played host to the infamous Ferrari/Ford rivalry among other legendary battles. Hopefully this one doesn’t languish in development hell.

Porsche Works driver Timo Bernhard has just earned his place in the history books, becoming the first driver to ever win all four major endurance races. Bernhard completed the “motorsports grand slam” this past weekend, racing not for Porsche, but for Audi in one of the new R15 race cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 2008 Bernhard won the 12 Hours of Sebring and back in 2003 he topped the podium at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Possibly even more impressive is that Bernhard has won the final race, the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, a four consecutive times from 2006-09.

“Even as a child I dreamt of one day admiring the overall winner trophies of all four long-distance classics in my display cabinet at home,” said Bernhard. “Now, bringing home overall victory in Le Mans, I have made this dream come true.”

Check out the gallery of Bernhards cars and victory celebrations below.

Audi‘s podium sweep at this years 24 Hours of Le Mans might just be the last time diesels dominate the series. The Automobile Club de L’Ouest (ACO), which runs the endurance classic, has announced rule changes for next year’s season that will see the elimination of the GT1 Class and changes to the LMP2 class, with all three levels allowing teams to run hybrid powertrains.

In 2009 Corsa Motorsports ran a hybrid LMP1 racer while the ACO monitored the car and now teams who wish to compete with hybrid power will be able to. The change of rules likely came with pressure from Porsche, which displayed its GT3 R Hybrid at this year’s Le Mans race but which wasn’t allowed to race. Porsche recently proved the capability of the car at the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race after leading the race outright for eight hours before an engine failure caused the team to retire.

Additional rule changes for the combined LMP class include a maximum engine size that is limited to 3.4-liters for naturally aspirated powerplants and 2.0-liters for turbocharged units, regardless of whether they are gasoline or diesel.

It is expected that the new ACO rules will be adopted by the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) for next year.

When the clock struck 12 today at Le Circuit de La Sarthe, Audi took home a stunning sweep of the podium at this year’s running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the Peugeot 908′s showing considerably more pace during qualifying, not even Audi Motorsports boss Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich would have predicted a 1-2-3 finish for their R15 TDI diesel-powered LMP1 machines.

According to Ullrich, “At the beginning it was a little unlucky for us but at the end it all worked fine. It’s a great reward for all the work that everyone [at Audi Motorsports] has done. I think this has to be the hardest Le Mans we’ve ever done.”

Dr. Ullrich was congratulated by his counterpart at Peugeot, Director of Motorsport Olivier Quesnel, straight after the race. Ullrich returned the favor by paying tribute to Audi’s arch rival Peugeot by remarking on the camararderie between the two teams. “In sport when someone wins then someone else loses, but when the loser comes and congratulates the winner it is all very sporting. That is what we did last year and that’s what Peugeot has done this year. It has been a fantastic battle, we’ve invited the Peugeot guys to a party tonight and we hope that  they will all come”.

For Audi this is their 9th victory at Le Mans, tying them with Ferrari as the second winningest team in history (Porsche having 16 wins to their name). The winning #9 Audi, driven by Mike Rockenfeller, Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard, also set a new distance record by completing 397 laps at an average speed of 225.228 km/h.

This was also Michelin’s 19th Le Mans victory and the 27th time the race has been won by a German car.

One of the toughest and most prestigious endurance races in the world, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has officially begun, with the third and final qualifying session running last night. Peugeot and their diesel-powered 908′s put on a dominating performance, claiming the top four spots on the grid and leading the way amongst the LMP1 group that was once owned by Audi.

Frenchman and former Indy Car champ Sebastien Bourdais led the way for Peugeot, claiming pole position for the French manufacturer and no doubt delighting the home town crowd in the process. Local fans were probably just as pleased to see Frenchman and former F1 driver Olivier Panis’ independent ORECA Team Peugeot Matmut qualify 4th just behind the three factory Peugeots.

Audi, who’ve owned Le Mans with their LMP1 machines over the last decade, claimed the next three spots on the starting grid with their trio of R15 entries, giving diesel-powered cars the top seven spots. Audi’s Allan McNish made a late charge during the final qualifying session to close the Audi-Peugeot gap to 2.5-seconds a lap, but over a 24 hour period Audi has to hope for superior fuel and tire economy if they’re to have any chance at defeating the quicker Peugeots.
