We recently caught the Audi RS4 Avant doing some testing in southern Europe and managed to snap some spy photos of the high performance German station wagon. The new Audi looks a little meaner than its predecessor thanks to some new angular headlights and an aggressive grille with wide and low flared front fenders.

Audi seems to be defying the current trend of turning to turbochargers over added cylinders with the RS4 by sticking a 4.2-liter V8 FSI motor teamed exclusively with a seven-speed S-tronic transmission in the upcoming highest-performance A4 model.

The new RS4 will only be offered in station wagon form, not a surprise when you consider that the RS4 wagon has always outsold the sedan variant. The V8 that has found its way into the newest RS4 also powers Audi’s RS5, and puts out 444-hp and 317 lb-ft of torque in that model. The RS4 Avant will bow at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show, at which time we should find out for sure whether the powerful station wagon will be offered in the States.

It seems that many manufacturers are leery of selling wagons in America because they tend to pull low sales numbers. Hopefully the power house of an engine and the mean looks will make the RS4 Avant an attractive enough offering that Audi will decide to offer it in the U.S.
