Hyundai has teased us with this rendering of its new i40 sedan, scheduled to be introduced at the Barcelona Motor Show on May 12.  This follows on from the i40 wagon, which was first revealed in Geneva back in March.

The i40 sedan has been described as boasting a ‘European’ identity, indeed much of the design and engineering work was carried out in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the home of the company’s European R&D center.

If the name of that town sounds familiar, that’s because it’s also home base to Adam Opel AG, the nerve center of General Motors’ European operations.  Thomas Bürkle; chief designer at Hyundai’s European Technical Center; said of the new car’s styling, we wanted to move away from the typical three-box saloon (sedan) and create a car that was in keeping with the sporty nature of the i40 estate (wagon). By sculpting a low, elongated roof line, we’ve given the i40 saloon a striking coupe-like silhouette.

Whether it will truly be a striking design remains to be seen, nevertheless, the wagon has so far been well received. As for choosing Barcelona as the launch venue for the car, well, there’s some logic to this.

According to Allan Rushforth, Senior V-P and COO of Hyundai Motors Europe, “the saloon market in Spain is very strong, claiming almost 40% of the D-Segment, so the Barcelona Motor Show was the logical choice for a reveal of such importance. We couldn’t be more delighted to be holding the world premiere of the i40 saloon in Barcelona, a vibrant European city steeped in culture and creativity.”

The actual unveiling takes place next Thursday, May 12 at 12.20 pm Central European Time in Hall 8 of the Montjuïc Exhibition Centre, which plays host to the Barcelona Motor Show.
