Smart is looking to expand its lineup after failing to turn a profit in the car business. “Smart was originally established to tackle the need for improved mobility, especially in congested city environments,” a Mercedes-Benz official to England’s Autocar. “Up to now we have concentrated our efforts on four-wheel solutions. The next stage is to looking at how to expand beyond this with other environmentally friendly vehicles.”
The scooter, which could be produced with the expertise of several experience component makers, would likely be built in factories in China, Thailand and India. These are also markets that are ripe for the introduction and promotion of both the Smart and Mercedes-Benz brand, as consumers could move up from a scooter to a Smart Fortwo and then to a Mercedes-Benz.
