Though not as exciting as some of the other wild GT 86 and BRZ concepts that debuted today at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Gazoo Racing Subaru BRZ Race concept does feature a track-ready motif for the everyday consumer.

Instead of going to extremes – as is the case with a lot of Tokyo Auto Salon show cars – the Gazoo Racing Subaru BRZ Race concept features a collection of modifications that any enthusiast could bolt on or have installed without breaking the bank.

Though no engine modifications were done to the concept, it did shed the factory wheels for smaller and lighter 16-inch BBS wheels wrapped with 205/55/16 Dunlop rubber. While all those into the flushed stance craze would cringe at the sight of this BRZ, those that have experience on the track and autocrossing understand the reasoning behind the smaller, 16×6.5-inch wheel setup. A roll cage has been installed in the cabin for extra safety and to help stiffen up the chassis.

The Subaru BRZ may come better equipped than the Scion FR-S, with a few extra features, but even then the cabin isn’t exactly what you would call luxurious.

As a sign that Subaru feels buyers would be willing to pay a few extra coins for even more luxuries, the Japanese automaker has unveiled what it’s calling the “BRZ Premium Sport Package Concept” today at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Exterior highlights include a subtle yet race-inspired matte-black painted aero kit, as well as large BBS 19-inch wheels in black, hiding some rather massive brake upgrades. Other details on the car have received the black treatment as well, including bumper detailing and even the side mirrors. But the biggest feature is easily the carbon fiber roof.

With the “sports” side of the agreement fulfilled, open the door and its easy to see where the car gets the “premium” in its name. The seats, steering wheel and more have been coated in a rich tan leather that looks about as tasty as a caramel pudding.

Subaru has announced its lineup for the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, where enthusiasts will undoubtedly be interested to see its BRZ Premium Sport Package Concept, Forester Sport Concept, and XV Sport Concept.

In total, the Japanese automaker will be bringing 10 items to exhibit, with eight of them being vehicles. Along with the Sport Concepts, Subaru will have a factory Legacy tS model on display, along with a BRZ race car that was built in collaboration with Gazoo Racing. In addition, the automaker will be debuting its 2013 Nurburgring 24 Subaru Impreza WRX STi race car.

The remaining two vehicles that will be present in Tokyo are its GT300 BRZ race car and an Impreza WRX STi four-door car for R4 racing. On display will be a next-generation D-4S engine and lastly is a Turbo “DIT” engine in cut out form.

According to the Japanese automaker, the BRZ Premium Sport Package Concept will feature a carbon fiber roof, 19-inch wheels by BBS, an STi aero kit, custom interior, and a sports muffler. The newly-launched Forester model will also be featured with a Sport Concept package featuring 20-inch BBS wheels and prototype STi parts and suspension components. A similar set of upgrades will also be seen on the XV crossover model.

Subaru is scrambling to keep up with demand for its BRZ sports coupe and will now ship extra units to the U.S. market.

Originally, the Japanese automaker had allocated 6,000 of its BRZs for the U.S., but demand is high enough that the brand will send another 2,000 units to the U.S. over the next four months.

“We are selling all the BRZs we can get,” COO Tom Doll said to Automotive News. “We have been sold out since the car was introduced.”

That boost will double U.S. deliveries of the vehicle from the original 500 to 1,000 per month. Subaru wasn’t sure how the car would sell, and offered a conservative supply initially. Prudent as that move was, the fears proved to be completely unfounded with demand far outpacing supply since the car went on sale in April.

HKS USA may not exist anymore, but that hasn’t stopped its parent company in Japan of continuing to manufacture high-quality performance parts. The long-awaited supercharger kit for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ is now available, though it may be hard to get your hands on it.

Evasive Motorsports made a big splash at the 2012 SEMA Show with its custom widebody, time attack-ready Scion FR-S. Lurking under the hood was an HKS supercharger kit, and the California-based company has finally had a chance to take it to a dyno.

Working off a baseline of 153.9 whp and 128 lb-ft of torque, the Evasive Motorsports FR-S hit 225.5 whp and 182 lb-ft of torque on the dyno while equipped with an HKS GT Supercharger Kit and a test pipe. That’s an impressive increase on the stock motor. According to HKS, its project car has a built motor and has been pushed closer to the 400 whp range, and Evasive plans to do the same for the 2013 time attack season.

It still remains to be seen how reliable forced induction is on the high compression motor found in the FR-S and BRZ, but those interested in more power for their GT86s now have several options. Of course, many will wait for the offering from TRD, since it’ll be a factory dealership option and could very well come with its own warranty.

No doubt it’s a question on anyone’s mind who bought a Subaru BRZ or Scion FR-S this year: when will there be a higher-performing version? 

Both automakers felled rumors about a forced-induction model like an unregulated logging company on a California redwood.

Given Subaru’s history with turbocharging its engines, it’s an easy assumption to make that a BRZ badged as such would get turbo treatment, but that won’t be the case. There isn’t enough space under the hood for Subaru to feel comfortable stuffing an intercooler in from the factory.

Instead, the car will get a tweaked intake and improved exhaust to bring the car’s power rating to between 220 and 230 hp. According to an unnamed source, the outlet says the tweaked BRZs will begin arriving at Japanese dealers sometime next spring according to AutoExpress.

When that happens, the cars will have a more aggressive body kit including a large rear spoiler, modified grille and front lip spoiler. U.S. delivery is expected to begin shortly after it does in Japan, although exact dates are still undisclosed.

Still, it’s expected to be very much like the concept car that Subaru brought to the 2011 L.A. Auto Show.

In a sea of custom Scion FR-S’ and Subaru BRZs at the 2012 SEMA Show, it’s surprisingly hard to compile a list of the top 10 without some criteria. So to compile our list of favorites, we decided to look at all the 86s and judge based on cleanliness, originality, and functionality – and of course, how it looked on the show floor.

Kicking off our top 10 list is a Subaru BRZ we spotted outside the convention center which to us, defines what a custom daily-driver BRZ should be. Nothing over-the-top, nothing too flashy – just simple and clean, with functional modifications. The Chargespeed carbon fiber lip kit complements the stock bodylines of the BRZ perfectly, while the custom blue Volk Racing TE37SLs pay tribute to a classic wheel that has truly lasted the test of time.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, we have a lot to say on just how popular the new Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ is at the 2012 SEMA Show.

As we walked the massive show floor at the Las Vegas Convention Center, we made a conscious effort to snap a photo of every BRZ and FR-S we came across. The result is over 100 photos of SEMA’s hottest car and we can all say that the aftermarket is more than excited for its arrival.

Rumors of a turbocharged Subaru BRZ are swirling around the internet, but would a turbo version even make sense?

Subaru is developing a turbocharged version of its 2.0-liter Boxer engine, one use of which could be the BRZ. That version will use a twin-scroll turbo system and Subaru-sourced straight direct-injection system rather than the Toyota built injection technology in both the FR-S and BRZ. Automotive News reports that the system, tuned for the BRZ, could make as much as 280 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque which would be a big jump over the naturally-aspirated engine’s 200 hp and 151 lb-ft.

Toyota already said it doesn’t plan to offer a turbocharged version of the FR-S. That combined with the fact that Subaru seems to be working independently on tweaking its engine would support the idea that this won’t mean a factory turbo FR-S is on the way. What about a BRZ?

Subaru spokesman Dominick Infante flatly denied the rumor, saying “we have no plans to offer a turbocharged BRZ.” Instead, he said the engine, as previously reported, is the powerplant being developed for the next WRX.

But with fans brandishing cash, it’s difficult to understand why the automaker would ignore such an eager market segment, when the engine will be ready to transplant. Or is it? Both the BRZ and FR-S are focused on well-balanced driving dynamics. Some worried that 200 hp wouldn’t be enough, but that idea proved to be generally unfounded.

Ramping the car’s power up by 80 hp could improve its straight line performance, but it may tamper with the car’s elegant handling.

Despite the denial, it seems likely that the engine will find its way into other cars. Subaru shared its WRX drivetrain with the Forester XT in the past and it seems logical that the engine would be shared, but Infante said those discussions haven’t begun yet.

Widely thought to preview the next Legacy, reports suggest the next WRX is actually being previewed in the company’s Advanced Tourer concept from the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.

The result of the collaboration between Subaru and Toyota has resulted in a fantastic sports car for the road, but how well is it doing in race car form? The Subaru BRZ GT300 has been racing all season in the Super GT series out in Japan, improving on each race and narrowly missing the podium in Round 7.

Its most recent competition was at Autopolis in Japan, where the BRZ managed to climb as high as third place during the race, but had to settle for a fourth place finish after an issue in the final stage of the race. It’s the best finish to date for the race car, which is impressive considering it’s the first year of competition for it.

“The final result is disappointing, but it’s clear that the BRZ can now fight against the best cars in the world,” said STI General Team Manager Hideharu Tatsumi. “Its strength is not just the handling abilities, but also its lap times don’t go down so much after a long stint. Taking advantage of its strength, we will be aiming for a top position in the next round at Motegi.”

Round 8 of the Super GT Championship will be on October 28th, 2012 at Twin Ring Motegi. Hopefully the team can achieve its goal of getting on the podium for year’s end.

Recently, we caught The Fast and the Furious 6 crew filming in Spain, and now word is that the new Subaru BRZ will star in the upcoming film.

It’s hardly a surprising move by the F&F franchise and the Japanese automaker given how much hype both the FR-S and BRZ has received in the last few months. The biggest surprise is probably that Scion didn’t jump on it first, supplying a few FR-S models to be included in the movie. Subaru gave the movie crew five BRZs to be used in the film, and chances are we’ll see all five of them decked out in aftermarket goods, the only way Fast and Furious can do it.

The Fast and the Furious 6 is due in theatres May 24th, 2013.
