Those nostalgic for bench seats and pavement-crushing suspension can now rejoice: Cadillac will build a flagship worthy of the Standard Of The World.
GM had been toying with the idea for months, but now it’s official: Cadillac is finally approved to develop a sedan based on a new rear-drive platform, known internally as the Omega. It’s an offshoot of the Zeta platform that underpins the Holden Commodore and more relevantly, the Chevrolet Camaro. But instead of the Australians working on this one, or GM China, the North American division will handle lead development.
Unlike those Cadillac land yachts of yore, however, the new flagship will feature aluminum construction and either a small-block V8, or a hybrid system.
And we don’t know when we will see the new Cadillac, but sources say it will hit the great American roads by 2015 at the earliest. In the meanwhile, we’ll just have to make do with the front-drive XTS, which is just that—a stopgap.

With Cadillac set to launch its top-level XTS luxury sedan in the next few years, the big saloon won’t be the company’s flagship for long. According to a report by Car & Driver, GM’s luxury brand is already planning a new model to slot in above the XTS, offering seriously big luxury and a rear-drive setup. (The XTS will only be available as front or all-wheel-drive).
Unfortunately there isn’t much concrete info beyond that and we have to doubt C&D’s ponderings that it will be based on a stretched version of the CTS platform. The outlet does, however, say the go-ahead for the project came from none-other than GM CEO Ed Whitacre.
The Cadillac brand looks to continue its reinvention over the next few years with a spate of new models. Recently we reported on the upcoming ATS (BMW 3 Series fighter) which is set to come standard with a turbocharged 4-cylinder. The CTS is also do for a remake in a few years and along with turbocharged 4s it will get GM’s upcoming twin-turbo V6 that reportedly displaces 3.0-liters and is set to rival Ford’s EcoBoost V6 motor. There are even rumors of a new 8-speed transmission for both models.
A suggested timeline for Cadillac’s product lineup will have the ATS Sedan launch in 2012, followed by an ATS Coupe and new CTS in 2013, with an ATS Convertible later that year. GM will most likely move ahead with plans for V versions of both the ATS and CTS but don’t look for them until at least 2014. There’s no word on when the new rear-drive flagship could arrive.
