Two very special birthdays are about to be celebrated with the legendary Volkswagen GTI turning 35 as well as 30 years of GTI owner meetups. The double anniversary will be celebrated in some very special ways.

The 235-hp GTI Edition 35 can be ordered now, and the 440-hp all-drive VW Motorsport Golf24 will compete in this year’s 24-hour race at the Nürburgring (23 to 26 June).

VW enthusiasts are assembling for the biggest Golf GTI Meet ever recorded in Wörthersee held from June 1st to 4th.

Because of this very special double anniversary that a second Golf race car will be presented to fans in a debut at Wörthersee. The remarkably restored 1977 Golf GTI 16S  really is a unique car. It may be a classic but this 1.6-liter non-turbo engine can produce 215-hp to the crankshaft and will be raced in the 24-hour Classic (3-hours for distance) that will be held before the main event.

The Golf 16S comes equipped with Bilstein shocks, a 5-speed manual sequential racing transmission, and an 80-liter fuel tank. KWL Motorsport has rebuilt a first generation Scirocco that won two class victories at the 24h classic at the Nürburgring. However this year, the race allows engines with up to 2.0-liters. The VW drivers Patrick Simon and Heinz Stuber are hoping for a third consecutive win for VW after winning in 2009 and 2010.

The limited production Golf GTI Edition 35 produces 235-hp, 25-hp more than the “regular” GTI, and will utilize the engine of the all-wheel drive Golf R.

Over 200,000 VW fans are expected to attend the meet in Wörthersee, making it the largest VW meet ever!

The annual show held at Villa d’Este, the Concorso d’Eleganza is a renowned showcase for some of the most spectacular classic cars. The grounds hosting the Concorso d’Eleganza (sponsored by BMW this year)mixes the finest concepts of the year with the most elegant classics of the last century.

This year, the show will feature an auction for the first time, while Ferrari will be showcasing a new lakeside exhibit alongside the new Audi Quattro Concept. The Infiniti Etherea, the Rinspeed Bamboo and James Glickenhaus’ P4/5 Comptezione will be exhibiting as well. The Super America 45 received its name from the Ferrari back catalog with models based on the 400, the 410 and most recently the new 575M. Supposedly, the one off Ferrari 45, is to be based on the 599 GTB Fiorano and was commissioned by a New York collector. Maranello’s custom orders department will build the car fitted with unique sheetmetal from Pininfarina. It has been suggested that the Super America 45 may receive a six cylinder engine. The last production Ferrari V6 was used 37 years ago in the Dino 246. Regardless of what engine is chosen to power the car, it will be sure to dazzle the crowd. The show will be held May 20-22 so be sure to follow up for the latest news!

Time is getting closer for the official Fiat 500 release on American soil, and everyone is getting excited. So much so that Fiat is looking for every possible enthusiast out there that owns a Fiat 500 or 600 built between the 1950s to the 1970s to display their cars at the world famous Concorso Italiano during the Pebble Beach festivities.

Fiat is requesting anyone who owns one of those Fiat classics to email or call the Concorso Office to receive a “special invitation.” And they don’t care what condition the vehicle is in, they simply ask that you do wash and wax it. This special once-in-a-lifetime display will probably be nice to usher in the new era of Fiat 500s that will be sold late in 2010.

AutoGuide be on hand to cover the event and will be sure to see what fine collection of classic Fiats they were able to gather. Plus, we’ll also be sure to check out the European version of the Fiat 500 that will be on display.

The Concorso Italiano will be at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey, California on August 13th, 2010 from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

In an interesting debate of whether or not two negatives make a positive, Hot Import Nights and NOPI have combined forces for a seven show tour in 2010. While it’s hard to argue that both series have had huge success in the past, business decisions by both companies as separate entities were questionable at best in 2008 and 2009.

NOPI canceled their drag, drift and show series in the middle of the season in 2008 much to the dismay of its competitors and sponsors. Hot Import Nights, riding on yet another buyout in 2009, canceled the last few shows of their season, upsetting many of the competitors that had qualified for the season finale and were relying on the season-end payout to cover their traveling expenses in 2009. Either way, the decisions made by both entities when they were ending their respective seasons were abrupt and offered no consolation to their sponsors and competitors.

But if there’s anything we know about the sport compact industry it’s how quickly people tend to forget, especially those that weren’t affected. It will be interesting to see how the joining of these two forces will work out. On paper, there is a recipe for success if the joining of these two minds are on marketing and conducting a proper show series. On the other hand, certain sponsors and competitors must be hesitant to be signing back on board. Only time will tell how successful the HIN NOPI Super Show tour is.
