10. Mini Cooper S Clubman

Cars can be bad for your health, and we’re not just talking about tailpipe emissions. The Ecology Center has published a list of the least and worst toxic vehicles from 2011-2012 after testing 205 different models with the aid of an x-ray fluorescence analyzer.

The tests consisted of scanning interior components such as the seats, dashboard, carpets, headliner, and door trim, and identifying the elements in each material. Based on the size of the item and the amount of contact a person would have with it, the numbers were crunched and the car given a score from a scale of 1-5, with a low score showing the chemicals being tested for weren’t detected, while a 5 would indicate high levels of the chemicals were detected.

Items commonly found in car components include elements like bromine, chlorine, antimony, mercury and lead.

Coming in as the 10th worst pick is the MINI Cooper S Clubman with an overall score of 2.84. The Cooper S Clubman is the MINI for those that wish to have a little more room than the standard Coopers. The Clubman is 9.4 inches longer overall than the standard MINI with a 3.2-inch longer wheelbase.

Danny White of Washington D.C. has a sense of humor. He loves the Redskins, loves his Chevrolet Avalanche, and loves a good joke. Unfortunately, getting a vanity plate that says “NO-TAGS” (hilarious) is proving to be an expensive joke.

Since White’s plate says NO-TAGS on it, every time the city finds a vehicle that has been abandoned or is missing its plates, parking officials  enter, well NO-TAGS in place of the normal number-letter combo. That routes the ticket over to White’s Chevy Avalanche. The poor guy said he’s received over $20,000 in tickets – none of which are even his.

Fortunately every few months he’s able to take time off work to go to the courthouse to get the tickets dismissed, but the ones that are made out for a Chevrolet become a tough sell. It’s become so problematic for White however that he can’t even renew his license or registration at the DMV.

An exception to the rule is being made thanks to local media coverage. A notice went out to all the different D.C. agencies that write tickets. The new protocol instructs officers to not write “NO TAGS” or “NONE.” Instead, they record the last six digits of the vehicles VIN and mark the state as “XX.”

White stands by his plate and refuses to change it. Unfortunately DMV director Lucinda Babers is considering recalling any confusing vanity plates altogether.

5. Nissan Frontier 4.0 2WD: 17 mpg

Trucks aren’t known for fuel economy, but finding a pickup that isn’t a gas hungry beast is a top concern for many truck shoppers. So if you’re looking for a good way to save money, both in terms of overall vehicle cost and especially at the pumps, check out this list of our Top 10 fuel friendly pickups.

The six cylinder Nissan Frontier can achieve a solid 17 mpg when packaged up with the either transmission, or drive-train. That’s right, it doesn’t matter which model of the 4.0 Frontier you choose, you’re looking at exactly the same EPA numbers: 16 mpg city, and 20 mpg highway. That V6 gets 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. The V6 Frontier starts at $22,620 and while it’s not the most fuel efficient, most powerful, or cheapest car on this list, it does offer a nice balance of the three.

Ever wondered what a Cruze would look like if it had some more trunk space? Today, Chevrolet has revealed its Cruze station wagon before its official appearance next month at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show.

These pictures show the wagon with the same clean looks that the Cruze sedan and hatchback have, and sporting a new set of alloy rims. Also new for the station wagon is the optional 1.7L diesel engine with start-stop technology.

Unsurprisingly, at 184.2-inches long, the Cruze station wagon is bigger than both the Cruze hatchback (177.5-inches long) and the Cruze sedan (180.9-inches long.)

Trunk space is what talks in the world of station wagons, and Chevrolet says if you pack the trunk up to the window, you’re looking at 17.6 cubic feet of trunk space. If you still need more space in the back, you can drop the back seats and enjoy a total space of 52.9 cubic feet of space.

The full reveal of the station wagon will take place at the Geneva Auto Show, where Chevrolet will show us updates to the Cruze’s front fascia, and interior. Also, hopefully Chevrolet will comment on the Cruze station wagon’s availability in other markets than Europe.

As of now there is no talk of bringing the stretched out Cruze to North America.

As if winning Super Bowl XLVI and becoming the MVP of the game wasn’t enough, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was also handed the keys to a 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Convertible Centennial Edition.

The MVP Award winner was chosen through a media panel and fan vote on www.superbowl.com during the game, and those that watched the events unfold during the big game probably knew the younger Manning would be MVP once the game was over and the Giants had won. Now he’ll get to enjoy the 6.2L V8 with 436-hp and 424 lb-ft of torque in a limited, black-on-black Centennial edition model to celebrate 100 years of Chevrolet history.

Those who watched the post-game ceremony probably got a good laugh at how Manning didn’t seem to really acknowledge that he had won a car. In fact, the announcer had to reiterate a couple of times just to get Manning’s attention to hand him over the keys. But we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt; considering he just won his second Super Bowl, proved he was an elite quarterback and, well, probably didn’t care too much about the Corvette.

Things just got mighty interesting with the Super Bowl ads, with Ford sending a cease-and-desist over to both General Motors and NBC in hopes that the Chevrolet Silverado apocalypse ad won’t air during the big game.

It’s probably too little, too late considering the commercial has already been seen several million times on the Internet, but the impact it could have being played during the big game clearly still worries Ford. The American automaker has asked NBC to pull the $7-million, one-minute ad from the Super Bowl but it appears that NBC will not be respecting that request. At the time of this writing, the ad will still be played and we can’t imagine NBC pulling it at this point in time.

GM Global Chief Marketing Officer, Joel Ewanick, is clearly finding the situation a little on the lighter side, releasing this in a statement: ”We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize,” Ewanick said. “In the meantime, people who are really worried about the Mayan calendar coming true should buy a Silverado right away.”

Ford spokesman Mike Levine has confirmed that Ford did send a letter to Chevy in regards to the ad and that Ford has a gripe with the durability claims that GM is putting out about their products.

In case you’ve missed the ad, check it out after the break.

1975_chevy_vega_cosworth_1.jpg

Now this is a true gem: A 1975 Chevrolet Vega Cosworth with only 291 actual miles on the odometer and is one of just 2,061 produced for the 1975 model year. And it could now be yours for just $37,900.

This is quite possibly one of the lowest, if not the lowest, mile survivor Cosworth in existence and features all original, non-repaired condition body that is still mint thanks to immaculate care and maintenance that was given to it throughout its life. Under the hood is a 2.0L engine with 110-hp, which may not sound like much these days, but made the Vega Cosworth one of the hottest performing cars back in 1975. The classic motor is mated to an original Seginaw four-speed manual transmission.

For wheels, the ’75 Cosworth features 13-inch British-made, gold-painted rollers with Goodyear Custom Steelgard Radials. But what is really telling about the condition of the car is its immaculate interior, featuring an all-black shade with custom bucket seats that show little to no wear. The speedometer tops out at 120-mph while a Cosworth-exclusive 8,000-RPM tachometer can be seen in the dash. Everything inside the cabin of the Cosworth is as expected, given just how little use this vehicle got in its lifetime.

The lucky buyer of this classic will be getting more than just the car and its history, it’ll also come with the original build sheet, two original window stickers, the car’s original owner’s manuals and warranty information, a factory flier, a service and overhaul manual, and a print out of a tech article which discusses the Cosworth and its engine in detail.

10. Hyundai Genesis Coupe 'Think Fast'

The Super Bowl only comes once and year, and it brings with it a heated advertising race between car companies to try and captivate the huge audience that watches the big game with eye catching commercials. These are AutoGuide’s picks for the 10 best commercials of this year’s Super Bowl in order from worst to best. And lucky you, there are so many this year we actually left the bad ones out.

 |  Feb 02, 4:01 PM

You would think with all the damage control Chevrolet has to do after their share of bad press on the Volt that they would be able to come up with a better, more creative ad for this year’s Super Bowl.

Nonetheless, Chevy will be presenting your run-of-the-mill commercial featuring aliens from another planet, or galaxy far, far away that are interested in the technology behind the Chevy Volt. Unfortunately it doesn’t really say too much about what makes the Volt a great, but more importantly safe, vehicle – other than the fact that “it’s electric, and when I need to go farther it runs on gas.”

We have to admit that Chevy is going to have to really step up their game if they hope to change the general public’s perception of their Volt. Aliens just won’t cut it these days.

Check out the odd commercial after the break.

Rick Hendrick, owner of four NASCAR teams under Hendrick Motorsports, picked up the first Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in person at GM’s Oshawa Assembly Plant yesterday as production of the 580-hp, 556 lb-ft of torque American sports car kicked off.

Hendrick is clearly a die-hard Camaro enthusiast, having purchased the first 2010 Camaro Coupe, the first 2011 Camaro Convertible and now the first Camaro ZL1 available for public sale all through Barrett-Jackson auctions. Even better, all three of his purchases had all proceeds benefiting local charities.

The first ZL1 to ever leave the production line features a black exterior with the optional Exposed Carbon Fiber Weaved Hood Insert and power Sunroof. The interior was packed with black leather with suede microfiber inserts on the seat and dash and also on the steering wheel and shift knob.

“Through a disciplined approach and a relentless focus on execution, the Oshawa team has worked efficiently to ensure a successful, high-quality launch of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1,” stated Dan Hermer, plant manager at the Oshawa Assembly Plant.

The Chevy Camaro ZL1 starts at $58,000.

Chevrolet has been on a marketing spree with their new compact Sonic, pulling off antics left and right including having Rob Dyrdek kickflip a Sonic and taking one skydiving over the Arizona desert.

For this year’s Super Bowl ad, Chevrolet looks to share all of the Sonic stunts it pulled off the past year which ranges from skydiving to bungee jumping to kick flipping and performing with OK GO in creating a music a video. While clearly these stunts aren’t made to inspire you to do wild and crazy things with your Sonic, it does a great job in generating buzz surrounding the new GM compact as an exciting and exhilarating vehicle to own and drive.

Chevrolet will be one of 11 automakers running ads during the Super Bowl this year and is expected to have a total of seven commercials on Sunday. Three will be during the big game, two before and two after. Watch the ad after the break.

Sales of the Chevy Volt are about to spike in California as GM prepares to introduce a new version of the green machine that will gain access to the state’s car pool lanes.

The current Volt does not meet the requirements to qualify for a high-occupancy-vehicle lane sticker, despite having a zero-emissions range of 25 to 40 miles. Beyond that range its gasoline engine kicks in, which the state says pollutes too much to gain access to the lanes, which have historically made exceptions for green machines like the Toyota Prius or fully electric cars. The new lower-emissions Volt will feature modifications to the catalytic converter to help burn exhaust gases more thoroughly.

Much of the success of the Prius in California is believed to come from that fact that it used to qualify for HOV lane status. Chevy is no doubt hoping achieving similar access will boost Volt sales in the state, which currently accounts for roughly a quarter of the 7,671 Volts sold last year. In particular, this convenience feature is expected to attract a new second-wave of buyers.

We first reported on this development back in November, and according to GM spokesman Rob Peterson the new lower-emissions Volts should be in California dealers by March.

Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? This custom classic Chevy Camaro combines vintage good looks with cutting-edge technology, allowing it to accelerate, turn and stop better than the majority of cars on the road today.

This frame-up built Camaro Pro Touring features an LS3 V8 powerplant under the hood and could be yours for the price of $129,900. It only sports 409-miles on the odometer, and its House of Kolor Galaxy Gray exterior is subtle yet classy.

The car originated from Pennsylvania, but was shipped over to The Installation Center out in Cleveland, Georgia where it began its impressive rebuild process. The majority of panels were replaced with high-quality restoration pieces before the vehicle made its way to Classic Cars Southeast in Lebanon, Tennessee where the body was fine-tuned to showroom fit and finish. The Galaxy Gray was then meticulously sprayed onto the vehicle while a set of House of Kolor Laser Red stripes contrasts the otherwise subtle exterior.

Under the hood however is a pristine 480-hp GM Performance Parts LS376/480 Hot Cam V8 powerplant. Cooling on the V8 has been upgraded with a Griffin polished aluminum radiator, an electric fan and fresh new hoses. Ceramic long-tube headers and a true  dual stainless steel exhaust system expels out all the fumes.

The suspension on this retro resale has been overhauled with products from Hotchkis, Chris Alston’s Chassisworks, and Varishock while the brakes are courtesy of G-street. On each of the four corners are 17-inch Foose Nitrous Chrome Legend wheels sporting Fuzion ZR1 rubber. The interior is traditional ’68 Camaro but has received some custom accents from M&M Hot Rod Interiors and Marquez Design. There is even some good ‘ol Kenwood speakers with Alpine amplifiers to give the Camaro a more sonorous cabin when you’re not enjoying the tone of the exhaust.

A pair of Chevrolet Impala taxi cabs were seized and their drivers are facing “stunt driving” charges out in Toronto, Ontario Canada when they were caught street racing on Canada’s longest street, Younge Street. Those charged with stunt driving will have their license seized for seven days and face a fine between $2,000 to $10,000.

The motives behind why both drivers decided to race it out is unknown, but sections of Younge Street have been known to be street racing spots in the past. Maybe both of them were just reliving the past or settling a grudge, either way we don’t think either of them owe the other a 10 second car.

GM has a long road ahead of them to rebuild consumer confidence in the Chevrolet Volt after months of negative press surrounding the fire risk of their extended-range electric vehicle.

The advertising campaign will focus on just how safe the Volt is and will include full-page ads in 19 different US newspapers including The New York Times, along with television ads. The launch of the ad campaign coincides with GM CEO Alan Akerson testifying to Congress that a recent Volt fire that took place after a NHTSA crash test would never occur in real-world situations.

NHTSA said late last week after its two-month investigation that the Volt does not pose any more of a fire risk than any other conventional vehicle. Unfortunately, damage clearly has been done as GM North America President Mark Reuss admitted that Volt sales took a huge hit in January. GM will be restarting production on the Volt in February at its Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant and expects to build it with “very reasonable” volume. Their immediate focus however, is to rebuild the reputation surrounding the Chevy Volt as quickly as possible.

2012_chevrolet_sonic.jpg

Beginning with the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet plans to apply eco-impact labels on all of its brand-new vehicles by 2013. As the first of any automaker to present its cars in this manner, Chevrolet’s Ecologic label allows customers to assess environmental impacts associated with any particular Chevrolet vehicle in all stages of its product life.

First, “Before the Road” presents the environmental impact of the vehicle’s manufacturing and assembly. Next, “On the Road” notes fuel-saving features such as cylinder shut-off systems, aerodynamics, and low-resistance tires. Finally, “After the Road” reveals how much of the vehicle can be recycled at the end of its useful life.

With these Ecologic labels, GM makes itself more attractive to environmentally conscious consumers. According to GM North America President Mark Reuss, “Customers want companies to be honest and transparent about their environmental efforts and sustainability goals, and rightly so. Putting an Ecologic label on each Chevrolet is just one more way for us to share our environmental progress.”

The numbers and data on the Ecologic labels are determined by independent, third-party sustainability agency Two Tomorrows, a company that provides environmental audit and assurance services to companies.

GM has announced “Chevy Happy Grad” as the winner of their Route 66 Super Bowl Ad contest, created by 26-year old Zach Borst of Long Island. The winning ad will be aired during Super Bowl XLVI and had already received over 32-million views between December 22 and January 14.

The best part about this ad is how easy it is to relate to it, considering we’ve all probably received gifts we never wanted, or mistakenly thought a certain gift was ours. The ad was filmed on location out in Long Island near Borst’s home and beat out 400 submitted scripts and 198 films from 32 different countries.

“We asked filmmakers to depict life’s journey and how Chevrolet is there along the way,” said General Motors Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick. “When I saw Zach’s spot, I had to laugh, because the situation is something many families can relate to – expectation and reality. ‘Happy Grad’ clearly shows the passion that Chevrolet elicits.”

Borst has been producing films since his childhood and has founded Goat Farm Films, his own production company based out of New York.

GM continued flexing their marketing prowess with a new promotion for the Chevy Sonic, creating the world’s largest claw game on Hollywood Boulevard out in Los Angeles.

The five-story 3D projection of a claw game was created on the side of The Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California and even won itself a spot in the Guiness World Book of Records for being the world’s largest claw game. Passer-bys were able to line up for a chance to use a human-sized joystick to direct the claw – which was essentially a huge projection on the side of the building – and had a chance to win prizes. The top prize of course was a brand new 2012 Chevy Sonic, but other prizes included a $4,000 vacation and a Burton snowboard.

After a half a decade of build-up, sales of the Chevrolet Volt are not going as planned. With a targeted goal of moving 10,000 units in its first full year on sale GM moved 7,671, leading to speculation that the American auto giant won’t be able to meet its lofty forecast for 60,000 sales in 2012.

Further casting doubt upon the success of the Volt is the fact that the rival Nissan Leaf (a fully electric vehicle), met its 10,000 unit sales target, despite the fact that (as GM’s Volt commercials accurately point out), the Volt is better suited to the needs of vastly more American consumers.

With a now-resolved crisis over the cars that could catch fire, GM is facing another roadblock, it’s dealers. According to a new report by Automotive News, Chevy dealers across the country are rejecting mass-allocations of Volts. In New York City GM offered 104 Volts to its 14 local dealers last month. Dealers only took 31.

Even dealers that have had no problem selling their Volt inventory in the past are now being cautions. Brett Hedrick, of Hedrick’s Chevrolet in Clovis, Calif., said he’s turned down offers by GM the past two months.

The news of low dealer orders has been confirmed by GM PR rep Rob Peterson, citing the misinformation surrounding the car’s recent safety concerns. Still, according to GM North America President Mark Reuss, supply, rather than demand, is the automaker’s biggest problem.

1955_chevy_bel_air_1.jpg

With so many classic cars out there that one could collect, it’s sometimes difficult to pick out the right one for you. Each model clearly has their own dedicated fans and followers, but sometimes collectors are looking for a vintage machine that can boast rare qualities not seen in other vehicles. We believe this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad is one of those vintage machines.

This first-generation Chevy Bel Air Nomad is a true classic in its stock form, but its previous owner decided to take it to a whole new level, investing over $127,000 into it. The refinished black body has been bolted onto a state-of-the-art pro touring chassis, while a small-block V8 has been combined with an immaculate and custom interior  to create one incredible ’55 Nomad pro-tourer.

In 2009, the owner of the Bel Air decided to take the vehicle to Willet Motorsports in Orlando Park, Illinois in order to do a complete frame-off build that consisted of modern updates and hours and hours of bodywork. The completely straight panel exterior has received a two-stage jet black paint job before it was sent off to Precision Street Rods & Machines in Northridge, California for some fine tuning.

Under the hood is a 350-cubic inch Chevy powerplant that’s been outfitted with plenty of show and go parts. Chrome components can be seen along with its Edelbrock Durashine Performer 4-barrel carburetors. Alternating the jet black paint shade of the exterior are Chevy Orange contrasts, given the engine bay plenty of life.

The Bel Air rolls on a set of Billet Specialty Legacy wheels with a pair of 18-inchers up front and 20-inchers in the rear. On the inside, a completely custom interior features warm beige leather and new-generation Autogauge gauges. An Alpine CD player almost seems out of place in this retro resale, but it’s a nice touch bringing some modern technology to a true American classic.

The sale will come with a full stack of restoration photos, paperwork and manuals for the vehicle’s aftermarket components, some recent maintenance receipts, a reproduction owner’s manual, a toy replica, a Chevrolet Nomad Association jacket and a high-quality car cover.

Oh yeah, the asking price is $99,000 while the Bel Air only sports 6,147-miles on the odometer. What are you waiting for?

Check out a video after the break highlighting the Bel Air Nomad.

Chevrolet has a lot to celebrate after an impressive 2011, having moved 4.76-million vehicles around the world, setting a global sales record. The US was Chevy’s largest market for 2011 with 1,775,812 vehicles sold, a rise of 13-percent from their 2010 figures.

In China, Chevy was able to sell 595,068 vehicles which marks a 9.5-percent increase from its previous year’s total. Other markets worldwide also posted significant growth with Vietnam experiencing a 79-percent increase, Russia with a 49-percent increase, Turkey with 30-percent and Germany with 21-percent.

Much of Chevy’s worldwide success can be attributed to its new Cruze, Sonic and Spark compacts. Popular crossovers and trucks worldwide include the Orlando and Colorado – both of which were designed for varied driving conditions and customer preferences all over the world.

The Cruze was Chevy’s best selling model for 2011, selling 670,000 worldwide. Since its introduction in 2009, the Cruze has sold more than 1.13-million.

“Without doubt the new Chevrolet portfolio has been a catalyst for our success around the world,” said Tim Lee, president of GM International Operations. “The launch of the Chevrolet brand in South Korea along with tremendous growth in China and across the rest of our international operations is proof that Chevrolet is becoming a first choice for customers around the globe.”

Chevrolet will continue to expand globally as currently more than 60-percent of its sales are outside the US market. Chevy looks forward to growing in other markets including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Uzbekistan, India and Columbia.

Prius v Five 65

Earlier this month a new reports noted that Chevrolet Volt sales were more successful in its first year than the sales numbers of the Toyota Prius hybrid on its first year back in 2000. What little optimism Chevrolet might have had on the Volt’s sales performance were quickly silenced when data revealed that Toyota dealt a quick knockout as its new Prius v wagon (also in its first year) out sold the Volt. And it did so with just 10 weeks on sale.

Official numbers for Chevrolet Volt’s 2011 sales are 7,671 units delivered. Toyota managed to sell 8,399 hybrid wagons, which did not arrive to U.S. dealerships and showrooms until the last week of October.

President of Toyota U.S. Sales Jim Lentz says, “Prius v is off to a great start.” For 2012, Toyota aims to deliver 220,000 Prii to U.S. customers, a 60 percent increase from 2011. Toyota’s offensive includes offerings of the original Prius, the Pruis v wagon, and the Prius c subcompact that arrives in March.

Shoving small block engines into short bed, half-ton trucks is nothing new. But a supercharged LS9 from a Corvette ZR1 into a Chevrolet Silverado pickup? Now that’s something worth checking out.

Aside from the side exit exhaust on the truck – which is a pretty common modification on Silverados – absolutely nothing else has been done to it on the exterior, giving no hint as to what waits underneath the hood. The video shows off the acceleration of the truck as well as a dyno pull, whipping down 510-hp and 504 lb-ft of torque. That’s at least 205-hp and 169 lb-ft of torque over the most powerful factory powerplant Chevy offers in their four-wheel-drive Silverado.

2001_corvette_z06_commemorative_1.jpg

When the Chevy Corvette celebrated its 50th birthday back in 2003, many enthusiasts were hoping for a special edition model to be released. Chevrolet for the most part failed to deliver, only offering a version with custom paint and an emblem package. The aftermarket decided to take things into their own hands, coming up with a limited edition appearance package that commemorated the 50th anniversary.

Developed by Advanced Automotive Technologies out in Rochester Mills, Michigan, a 1953 Commemorative Edition appearance package features retro C1 styling with a then-new generation C5 Vette – in this case, a 2001 model. Only seven total C5 Z06s got converted, and this is one of them. In total, only 200 of the 1953 Commemorative Edition packages made it onto C5s worldwide.

Packed with 405-hp, this very hard-to-find creation sports only 8,049-miles on the odometer and has an asking price of $69,900. Other than the retro-styled appearance package, most everything is what you’d expect on a C5 Z06, so no huge surprises under the hood or inside the cabin except that it’s all immaculate. Nonetheless, the aesthetics are what makes this car so unique, with it completely torn down to everything but its doors and roofs for the remake.

The fiberglass panels for the 1953CE kit were aligned to factory perfection before the entire body got resprayed Torch Red. To complete the transformation, new lights and red metal accents were added to the car. The result is a retro-style Vette with modern technology under the hood and a modern body to preserve it for many years to come.
