California EV start-up Coda Automotive launched its first and likely last stab at the electric car market this year.

Last week, CODA Automotive began production on its electric sedan and now the Los Angeles-based automaker has begun selling in their home state of California.
The CODA sedan easily fits five and is based on the Chinese market Hafei Saibao. Priced at $35,200, the EV is competitive especially considering that it offers up to a 125-mile range on a single charge. The first 500 retail vehicles will come with limited-edition features to prove that early adopters have one of the first CODAs to hit the road.
Unlike traditional automakers, CODA is selling their EVs through unique, mall-based showrooms in addition to conventional dealerships. Last year, CODA celebrated the opening of their first dealership in a Los Angeles mall.
Even though pricing has CODA’s vehicles in an entirely different market, we hope that they have better luck in the near future than what Fisker has ran into recently.
While many EV start ups struggle to actually make a series production vehicle, Los Angeles based CODA Automotive has announced that production of it’s 2012 electric sedan is now officially underway.
Indeed the very first example, a silver four-door, rolled off the assembly line yesterday. Not surprisingly, the executive chairman of CODA Holdings, Mac Heller, was ecstatic. “This is an incredibly exciting day for the CODA family and the EV community,” he declared. “Since day one, we’ve been dedicated to designing an electric car that provides the amenities that the American driver has come to expect, such as range, torque, and value.”
The 2012 CODA sedan is an electrified version of the Chinese market Hafei Saibao mid-size sedan, sporting a 31 kW/h lithium ion iron phosphate battery pack, which the company says gives it a range of up to 125 miles on a single charge.
In addition, an onboard 6.6 kW charging capability, is said to deliver a full charge in six hours using level 2 (240-volt) charging apparatus.

Coda Automotive, known for their upcoming sedan electric vehicle, has expanded their business by announcing a new venture called Coda Energy. The spinoff business unit will specialize in building stationary energy storage systems.
All the knowledge gained by Coda while designing and developing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles has lead them directly into the grid storage energy world, which has become quite common amongst battery manufacturers. Both A123 Systems and BYD have been known to design systems for both industries, helping to curb production costs while bringing scalability to their operations. Nissan and General Motors have also announced their intentions to repurpose used EV batteries for grid storage.
Coda Automotive is expected to have their sedan EV on the market sometime soon in California, offering a 150-mile range vehicle for under $40,000 and a 125-mile range vehicle for around $37,250 – both prices before a $7,500 federal tax credit and state incentives. Either way, we are continually impressed by the number of projects that are out there, to store energy.
Never heard of the American car company Coda? We won’t blame you. This electric car upstart is trying to make a name for itself, but has so far run into production delays plus other birthing problems new car companies face.
However, the editor’s at Forbes believe in Coda and that it will soon be among the most successful new companies in America. Forbes has thus included Coda in their annual “100 Most Promising Companies” list.
Coda is also the only car company in this exclusive list, which mostly is comprised of software companies, and has placed a burger joint (Smashburger) at the top.
Forbes says that the reason Coda is on its list is because of “compelling business models, strong management teams, notable customers, strategic partners and precious investment capital.” Even in tough times, Coda has managed to raise money, hire more people and start production, which is a huge accomplishment in these tough economic times.
Coda’s CEO Phil Murtaugh said he is “honored and excited for this recognition.”
If all goes to plan, Coda will start delivering their electric sedan in a few months time. Price start at $39,900 plus a destination charge of $895. However, due to its green credentials, you’ll get a $7500 credit from the Government. The Coda requires six-hours (from 220V) to charge fully and has a range of 150-miles.
Given all the buzz surrounding this year’s LA Auto Show, there was perhaps one thing that was seemingly overlooked; that being the ambitious plans by CODA Automotive to make its electric sedan a seriously viable proposition to the likes of mainstream passenger cars, at least when it comes to driving in So Cal.
The car, which is based on a rather workaday model sourced from China, the Pininfarina styled (yes really) Hafei Saibo, features an electric driveline with a 34 kW lithium-ion iron phosphate battery system and a 6.6 kW onboard charger. This is said to provide a greater range than comparable all-electric vehicles currently on the market (some 150 miles, which CODA says is five-times the distance of the average daily commute), plus reduced charging times. The 6.6 kW unit will take approximately four hours to deliver a 100 mile charge).
In addition, CODA is backing its $39,900 2012 model year sedan (federal tax savings and California rebates knock approximately 10 large off the sticker), with a 100,000 mile, 10-year warranty on the battery pack, currently besting those offered by the likes of Mitsubishi and Nissan.
Furthermore, at the 2011 LA Auto Show, where the company had a number of its CODA sedans on display, it also announced that it’s partnering with GE Energy to market and distribute the GE WattStation EV charging unit alongside the cars at the same retail locations.
The idea is to provide a one-stop shopping experience for would-be CODA buyers as well as boosting the vehicle’s potential market appeal.
“We’re excited to be the first car company in the US to be working with [GE Energy] to support consumers as they enter the EV world,” declared Phil Murtagh, CEO of CODA Holdings.
Luis Ramirez, CEO of GE Energy Industry Solutions, added ” this milestone is another step in GE’s journey to lead the future of global electrification. As demand for the [GE WattStation] continues to exceed our expectations, bringing our products closer to the customer will help accelerate the adoption of EVs.”
The GE WattStation is a Level 2 charging device, designed to shorten the time it takes to re-charge the car, currently one of the biggest obstacles facing all-electric vehicles.

CODA Automotive has opened its first consumer store in the Westfield Century City Shopping Center in Los Angeles, California, hoping to bring an innovative sales experience to their consumers. CODA Automotive is part of CODA Holdings, a California-based developer of advanced Lithium-ion power battery systems that are used to power their CODA sedan. The four-door, five-passenger, CODA EV features 134-hp and 221 lb-ft of torque with a range of around 150-miles.
The new CODA Experience Center stays consistent with the rest of CODA’s green mantra, building its 900 square feet store with eco-friendly materials that’s located near to a multiplex theatre, dining terrace and valet parking. The innovative store features an Electric Vehicle Bar where consumers can be educated on the benefits of electric cars; a Technology Display featuring a full-size replica and explanation of CODA’s battery and propulsion systems; and a Test Drive Check-in Counter that’s a one-stop shop for consumers to sign up for a test-drive.
CODA’s Experience Center isn’t just staffed with those knowledgeable about their EVs, but also how to setup your home for an electric vehicle and CODA also plans to host several events educating all nearby residents on the benefits of electric vehicles.
