When several Renault execs were accused of selling the French automaker’s electric car secrets to the Chinese, it made headlines around the world. Last week came reports that the story might have been a hoax – and that now appears to be the case with a Renault security agent having been arrested.

The individual, who’s name has not been released, it charged with “organized fraud” for having invented the industrial espionage story. The arrest was made when the security agent attempted to board a flight to Africa at Charles de Gaulle airport.

Doubts arose recently when no evidence, including allegations of payoffs, could be determined.

The three Renault execs were never formally charged, but were placed on probation while under investigation.
