A violent accident occurred in Harelbek, Belgium today. Michael Cornette, a journalist of the Belgian newspaper Krant van West-Vlaanderen, was instantly killed while riding as a passenger in an Ariel Atom 3 when it careened off the road and struck a grain silo.

The super lightweight sports car was piloted by 30 year-old Mattieu Desmet, who is currently placed in an induced coma and suffering severe damages to his kidney. The Ariel belonged to Matthew Harris and was loaned for a road test feature to be prepared in anticipation of the upcoming Brussels Motor Show later this month.

Sources have said that excessive speed is the cause of the accident and that the force of the impact was so strong that the silo shifted 10 inches.

Michael Cornette has been a part of Krant van West-Vlaanderen since 1999, and wrote lifestyle articles for the paper. Cornette is survived by his wife and son.
