He’s the only man so far to have won motorsport world championships on both two and four wheels. Now, John Surtees is set to be reunited with two of the machines that made it possible on Sunday, August 21st at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
From 1956-60 Surtees proved a force to be reckoned with in Motorcycle Grand Prix racing; having earned a factory ride with MV Agusta, he rode to seven world championships and in 1958-59 won every single race he entered in the 350 and 500cc categories.
In 1960, he switched from two wheels to four, earning a drive with Team Lotus for the final four F1 races of the season. It all came together in 1963 when he was hired by Enzo Ferrari to drive for his team. The following year, in a hotly contested champinship battle against Graeme Hill, Surtees won the F1 championship, making history in the process.
Surtees later went on to field his own cars in Formula 1, finally retiring from the circuit in 1973. The two vehicles on display at Pebble Beach will be one of the MV Agustas on which he dominated Moto GP in the late 1950s, as well as the championship winning 1964 Ferrari 158 Formula 1 racer.
