Touted as the most advanced car ever made, Chevrolet announced the official start of production of the Volt electric car today during a press conference at the Hamtramck assembly plant where the car will be built.

General Motors has also announced it will auction off the very first production Volt, with all proceeds going to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation in support of Science, Technology, Match and Engineering.

The bidding for the first production Volt will be held online at Volt.Charitybuzz.com. Now’s your chance to help out a good cause and get a car that’s easy on the environment. Then again, you might just want to stick it in a museum and wait for the value to skyrocket.
