True Mustang lovers could never dream of the iconic muscle car without a GT badge and a burly V8 engine. Sure the V6 might have over 300 hp, but, well… it’s not the V8. So imagine what the legions of die-hard ‘Stang fans would say if Ford rolled out an electric Mustang?

Interestingly enough, reports – or rumors – are surfacing that Ford is doing just that. In fact, one source has confirmed that an electric Mustang prototype already exists.

As wild an idea as it seems, it’s really not that unbelievable. Many automakers are investing in all-electric vehicles, with some being variants of their current popular models. Audi‘s E-Tron and BMW‘s i-Series are great examples that electric vehicles could be stylish and sporty, while Tesla paved the way when it came to building an appealing electric sports car.

1970_mustang_boss_302_1.jpg

Even though we recently had the pleasure to review and enjoy Ford’s 2012 Mustang Boss 302, we didn’t lose sight of the classic Boss 302s that put the famed model on the map. Now it’s nice to see a contrasting classic 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302, restored from the frame-up to immaculate form, available for you to purchase.

This classic Boss 302 was originally built in September of 1969 out at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan plant. Over 40 years later, it got a complete restoration by Daniel’s Hot Rods & Body Shop out in Jarretsville, Maryland. It sports a completely original, rust-free body on every panel except its front fenders. After the previous owner found some small inner-patches on the stock fenders, he tracked down NOS replacements and had them installed to showroom alignment.

Then the vehicle got its statement making paint job in Grabber Blue along with a flat black rear deck lid,  spoiler and expertly-applied Boss side stripes. The result? A classic Boss 302 that could rival a brand new 302 in the looks department bumper to bumper.

Under the hood is a numbers-matching small block 302 V8 Winsor powerplant with 290-hp. The fully restored classic has 52,169-miles on the odometer and has an asking price of $89,900. Combine the immaculate exterior and the perfectly-running engine with the pristine black vinyl interior and you’ve got a near-perfect retro resale.

We’re pretty sure this video is more of a testament to the stupidity of some people rather than the shortcomings of Ford‘s V6 Mustang.

First of all, we hardly believe that this individual had the opportunity of driving his Mustang “on a closed road at high speeds”, especially considering the quick glance of the road from the video proves it’s your run-of-the-mill public street. Secondly, there’s a reason why Ford – who has been manufacturing vehicles for over a century – put a speed limiter of 112-mph on their new Mustang V6. Lastly, what were you thinking filming yourself trying to go towards 140-mph while driving the car?

The original poster of the video, who is also the owner of the vehicle, bashes Ford stating that the drivetrain was not designed to handle the power of the engine. No, the drivetrain wasn’t designed for people to remove the speed limiter and try to take their V6 Mustang to 140-mph. There’s a V8 for that.

According to the owner, the broken driveshaft caused write a bit of havoc (as one could expect) to the Mustang. There was a hole in the metal floorpan, major exhaust system and muffler damage, broken transmission shifter, broken parking brake, broken interior plastic trim, etc.

Thankfully the majority of the people commenting on the video gives us hope that not everyone is this silly in believing this is Ford’s fault.

Check out the video after the break.

1969_boss_429_mustang_1.jpg

Up on eBay is an extremely rare 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429, packing just 2,219-miles on the odometer with a starting bid of $185,000. The ’69 Boss 429 is one of just 858 made during a two-year production run.

Powered by a 429-cubic inch NASCAR motor with 375-hp, this Boss 429 Mustang was made into a 1/4-mile drag car and primarily ran races along the the east coast and was a 10.50-second car with a top speed of 118-mph on the quarter mile. The motor was recently rebuilt and everything on the car is 100-percent matching. And despite Ford rating the motor at 375-hp, it was widely believed it produced a lot closer to 500-hp.

Even more remarkable is the fact that this particular car was once featured in a drag racing magazine back in 1970 – some of us weren’t even born yet.

Now this is a 10-second car worth owning, Dom.

13ShelbyGT500_01.jpg

The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 might not have the wedge shape of a European supercar, but its 202 mph top speed puts it in a rareified world of hand-built Italian exotics.

SVT engineer Jamal Hameedi told MustangsDaily that the GT500 recorded a top speed of 202 mph during testing, thanks to the improved power figures and some apparent aerodynamic changes. Hameedi also said that while Ford was doing suspension testing at the famed Nurburgring, they didn’t record any times for the GT500, avoiding the typical Nurburgring bragging rights contest that so many automakers fall prey to.

Those that don’t know, Megabloks has been making a strong push into the building blocks world dominated by Legos.

They’ve been having success getting into the market by teaming up and designing kits outside of where Legos can be found. Now it looks like Megabloks has struck up a partnership with Need for Speed to produce some collector series toys, and this is our peek at their first creation – Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s / Team NFS Ford Mustang RTR-X.

We originally saw the RTR-X project when it was getting prepped for the 2010 SEMA Show, and a year later, it’s still one of our favorite cars ever built. Now we’ll be keeping our eyes out to get our own 69-piece kit to build our own RTR-X to sit on our desks… you know, since we’ll never own the real thing.

65StangShell.jpg

Vintage car lovers who live in fear of terminal oxidization now have a last resort in the fight against rust. Ford displayed a ’65 Mustang body shell at the 2011 SEMA Show that was stamped from entirely new steel that OE supplier Dynacorn International (producer of bodyshells for Ford) says is far superior to the steel used on the original cars.

Dynacorn’s bodyshells are far from cheap at around $15,000 a pop, but it’s hard to argue with the value of having an entirely new, high-grade steel bodyshell for one’s muscle car project. Furthermore, the bodyshell can be combined with a full suite of Ford performance parts to create what is technically a brand-new Mustang that can be configured like a ’64.5, ’65 or ’66 Mustang. Aside from the philosophical conundrum of whether this is technically a “new” or “vintage” car, those who opt for this route will have to register their vehicle as a kit car, a lengthy and involved process in many jurisdictions.

Nonetheless, we think that the reproduction bodies are a very cool idea that can save one a lot of time and effort on the road to a high quality muscle car project.

sema_ford_mustang_2.jpg

At least four different companies will be bringing their vision of the ultimate custom Ford Mustang to this year’s SEMA Show. Ford released some info and images of four Mustang projects that will be showcased in the Blue Oval booth this year, but our sources say that these won’t be the only ones. Nonetheless, the four that Ford deemed worthy of revealing to the public are from Forgiato Wheels, Creations n’ Chrome, MRT Performance and H&R Springs.

Starting with Forgiato’s creation, the wheel manufacturer looked to build a Mustang that clearly focused on their manufacturing of custom rollers for various vehicles. They chose to show off a three-piece staggered 21- and 22-inch setup on their Mustang while a TS Designs wide body matched to a 3dCarbon Boy Racer body kit is sure to set it apart from the crowd. Finished off with a matte pearl silver paint job courtesy of PPG and this Mustang looks to be a clear winner. Oh, and the obligatory Vortech supercharger can be seen under the hood.

Next up is a Spectra Chrome Boy Racer Red Mustang courtesy of Creations n’ Chrome. Accented by a carbon fiber hood, roof and trunk from Autosport Dynamics, this Mustang will clearly be the flashiest of the bunch. A custom chromoly roll cage was also fabricated by the folks at Creations n’ Chrome while a set of 18-inch HRE Wheels will further set off the car. Again, another Vortech supercharger can be seen under the hood while some race-inspired interior modifications will have to be seen at the show.

Third on the list is a ProCharger supercharger-equipped Mustang from MRT Performance. Further performance modifications include an MRT stainless steel MaxFlow h-pipe and half-back exhaust system while a set of H&R coilovers gives this Mustang enhanced handling capabilities. MRT then looked to the outside by giving it a custom hood and paint accents while the interior received a pair of Sparco race seats.

Last but not least, the folks over at H&R will be bringing an Edelbrock E-Force supercharged Mustang to the show, fully equipped with H&R Springs’ Coil RSS sport suspension. In addition, H&R also threw on their sway bars (front and rear) and Triple C adjustment bolts. This Mustang will have an unmistakable rumble thanks to a Flowmaster stainless steel exhaust while the exterior will feature a full body kit from Street Scene Equipment and custom paint by Tri-Star Enterprise.

Along with these four Mustangs, Ford will also display a selection of Fiesta and Focus models, along with several Explorer and F-Series trucks.

The glory days of the muscle car era may be long over, but die-hard fans of V8 powered American iron don’t have to spend countless hours restoring oxidized hulks of decades-old metal anymore.

Ford will be showing off a brand new ’65 Mustang bodyshell – yes you read that right – at the 2011 SEMA Show starting Monday, October 31st. Dynacorn International, an independent contractor used by Ford to stamp body shells, also creates brand new bodies for Ford Mustangs Chevrolet Camaro and Chevelle models as well as Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Pickups.

With the new bodyshell (which costs around $15,000) and Ford’s authorized parts dealer network, one could basically build an all-new vintage Mustang, configured as an original 1964.5, a 1965 or 1966 model. Such a car would be subject to various kit car laws, and would have to be assigned a special VIN number by one’s local government, but for the hobbyist that wants the absolute best muscle car going, there’s really no better option.

tjin_edition_sema_cars_1.jpg

Our friends over at Tjin Edition gave us some teasers today on a pair of Ford vehicles that they’re currently building for the upcoming SEMA Show. This year, Tjin Edition has teamed up with Ford to build out a Mustang GT 5.0 and an Explorer, with the Mustang being a follow up to last year’s Ford Fiesta UTI Sweepstakes car. That means the 2012 Tjin Edition Ford Mustang will be built in collaboration with UTI and given away later next year.

The Tjin Edition 2012 Ford Explorer will feature a custom Dupont paint job by LR Auto Body, set off by a set of 24-inch iForged Concave wheels wrapped with Falken rubber. Eibach Suspension will give it a lower stance while bigger Baer brakes gives the Explorer improved braking performance and rotors that won’t look minuscule behind the massive 24-inch wheels. On the inside, Tjin Edition outfits the Explorer with black leather interior and a pair of Recaro child seats, while a Thule bike rack will sit up top.

The giveaway Mustang will also sport a bright orange Dupont paint job by LR Auto Body, 20-inch Forgestar wheels, Baer big brakes and a ton of extra performance thanks to a Paxton Supercharger. Needless to say the Mustang will also get a custom interior. More details on the Mustang’s giveaway will be released at SEMA.

Tjin Edition also teased to us that these aren’t the only two vehicles they’ll be working on for SEMA. Rumor has it there will be a couple of GM creations and a collaboration on a Honda project.

The high revving 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 is known strictly for its energized 5.0-liter V8 and its adjustable suspension because it was built as a track car. It was built to go fast and handle well in the corners but one aspect of the car that could use some work is the no-frills interior.

Several owners have been complaining that the interior could use some more technology. It looks as though they may be getting their wish, as a leaked list of features includes the SYNC system. The Boss will also be getting a 4.2-inch LCD message center that will likely be the same one currently used in the Explorer and F-150. The Boss will also get HID headlights, although it is unclear whether they will be standard or an option, but what has been confirmed is that the graphics package will be available, similar to that of the 1970 Boss 302.

Here’s a perk that those lucky Ford Mustang Boss 302 owners get: a free track day with Ford Racing at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. And now that dates have been announced and the phone lines now open for registration, those owners should better clear their calendars.

The two-day experience begins with a private dinner and tour at the track’s Larry H. Miller Total Performance Museum, where owners will bone up on their knowledge of Boss heritage. The next day consists of classroom sessions with instructors, then a chance to practice vehicle techniques behind the wheel of their Mustangs. After lunch comes exercises around the entire track with instructors and then by themselves. Upon completion, owners get a special graduation pack and the bragging rights of their entire neighborhood.

Fifteen sessions are now available, starting now until the end of the year. Dates and registration are available on the Boss Track Attack website or by calling 435-27-SPEED. Participants can also stay an extra day or bring a guest, which reminds me: my own schedule’s clear for the rest of the year, as a matter of fact. Hint, hint.

We reported on Ford’s investigation and potential recall of its 2011 and 2012 V6-engined Mustangs, which have developed problems with the 6-speed manual transmission. Now here’s what they’re actually like, as recorded by Ford customers.

The videos show an inability to grasp second or third gear with the clutch depressed. At speeds, the gears grind in 2nd and 3rd when the driver lets off the gas. When downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, the gear fails to grab at all. More dangerously, the transmission sometimes locks out upon acceleration at 70 mph, causing the rear end to lose traction. The 6-speed transmissions are all made by Getrag, which has supplied Ford for years.

V8 Mustang transmissions have a skip-shift feature, forcing drivers to shift into 4th on low acceleration to save gas. But these are V6-engined cars that don’t carry the feature, and some of these cars have had their transmissions replaced once before. Some of these transmissions are bolted to new cars with just 5,000 miles; Ford has refused to honor the warranty the second time around, citing “abuse.” Lots of frustrated owners are sharing their stories—enough for Ford to conduct an investigation of their own, they hope. Click the jump to see more wanton acts of transmission “abuse.”

Galpin Auto Sports, also known as GAS, has been building some of the industry’s wildest Ford Mustangs since it opened shop. The tuner’s newest project is a collaboration with specialty manufacturer SPX, and will be a 1969 Mustang Boss 429-inspired ‘Stang featuring 700-hp, Candy Apple Red Pearl paint, a custom one-off metal widebody and Forgiato three-piece wheels. The completed project will be auctioned off at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona with the proceeds benefiting St. Jude Hospital to fight cancer.

With everything going towards a good cause, the fortunate one to win the Mustang will get themselves one hell of a machine. The 5.0L V8 will be a whole new monster thanks to Ford Racing’s supercharger, camshafts from Comp Cams and a Bassani exhaust system. All 700-hp will feel nice and snappy through the transmission thanks to a Hurst short-throw shifter while the Eibach lowering springs give the Mustang better handling and a nicer stance. Speaking of stance, GAS will be outfitting the one-off custom with a staggered set of 21-inch (front) and 22-inch (rear) Forgiato wheels, wrapped with Pirelli P-Zero rubber. Peeking behind each custom three-piece wheel will be a set of Wilwood 14-inch rotors, with 6-piston calipers in the front and 4-piston calipers in the rear.

On the outside, the Candy Apple Red Pearl PPG paint will be accented by the previously mentioned one-off metal widebody. A Roush billet aluminum grille will give the front end a bolder look while the original 1969 Boss 429 hood scoop pays homage to a true classic. For the rear, a Boss 302 Laguna Seca rear spoiler will be added.

Once it’s completed the car will tour several shows across the country, including the 2011 SEMA Show.

Both the new Ford Mustang and the new VW Jetta are facing possible recalls as a result of ongoing investigations by safety officials.

The Mustangs in question are those from the 2011 and 2012 model year equipped with a manual transmission, with reports from owners stating an inability to shift into gears while merging into high speed traffic or while turning left across oncoming traffic. A total of 32 complaints have gone through NHTSA on the Mustang.

On the Volkswagen Jettas equipped with TDI, seven complaints have been filed alleging a leak from the fuel line to the fuel injector. NHTSA has also received one complaint from a VW Golf equipped with the 2.0L TDI. Incidents are being reported between 2,470 to 7,764 miles and could impact 40,000 Jetta TDI vehicles.

Both of these cases may or may not result in recalls.

Sales of convertibles are lowering like a power hardtop, with an over 50% decline in just four years.

Convertibles have never been the most popular of vehicles, owing to people eschewing fresh sunshine for such plebeian concerns such as seats and storage room. But in 2006, convertible sales still managed to account for 2% of car sales in America, with 350,000 drivers showing off their bald spots.

But by 2010, the decline of open-roofed cars sunk to 1.2% of the current car market. The stars of the convertible show are the Chevrolet Camaro, with 12.4% of convertible sales, and the Ford Mustang, following behind at 11%. And no surprise, either: no matter how bad any recession gets, the two pony cars will always have lasting appeal.

2010 Formula Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. takes his dog and pony show to the Middle East: drifting Saudi Arabia in his Ford Mustang.

At the Al Reem Circuit, he puts on a show that would make Ken Block proud. Titled Drifting In The K.S.A, Gittin was given permission to do basically anything around the racetrack, which he takes full advantage of: he first tackles the course grounds in a Boss 302 before bringing out his Monster-liveried Falken Mustang in a cloud of tire smoke.

“Everyone I met, from Princes, to other professional drivers, to swarms of fans, treated me with amazing hospitality and kindness.” Said Gittin. “It was an incredible experience that I will never forget and I look forward to coming back to the K.S.A!”

ford_mustang_with_v12_aston_martin_vanquish_engine_1.jpeg

Arguably the most exotic engine that Ford has ever built is the V12 for the Aston Martin Vanquish. Now there’s a chance to own that very engine under the hood of a genuine Ford product with this 2005 Ford Mustang featuring a rorty 5.9-liter V12 powerplant. The vehicle was originally built by Western Motorsports for SEMA in 2006 and still has less than 1,250 miles on the odometer.

For $79,900, you’ll get yourself a 600-hp V12-powered Ford Mustang with a 6-speed Tremec T-56 transmission mated to the engine. Bolted to the motor is a set of custom 6-2-1 headers that expel exhaust fumes through a Magnaflow 3-inch exhaust.

Suspension modifications include a set of coilovers from KW Suspension while the vehicle features a set of iForged Essen wheels with a staggered fitment – 19×9-inch in the front, 19×12-inch in the rear. The iForged wheels are wrapped with Micheline Pilot Sport rubber. Peering behind the mesh wheels is a Baer Extreme big-brake upgrade, featuring 14-inch rotors and 6-piston calipers.

For exterior modifications, the Mustang has been repainted with BASF’s R-M Carrizma Candy Blue paint and also features a Classic Design glassback roof, Colecraft’s billet custom fender and hood vents and WMS’ custom aluminum grill. Interior upgrades include a set of Cobra Missano Leather and Alcantara seats while AiM supplies the Mustang with their Strada dash and datalogger.

Where would the Ford Mustang be without its legions of aftermarket supporters? There’d be no Shelby, for starters. And there would be a shortage of Fox-bodies doing burnouts with straight pipes in the K-Mart parking lot.

But Ford’s latest technical service bulletin aims to put a damper on all this modifying—at least for warranty purposes. It’s not for any potential mechanical issues; rather, tweaking the 5.0-liter engine could “cause damage to the powertrain and/or void the factory powertrain warranty…attempting to increase the engine output via recalibrating the PCM may result in poor drivability, DTCs, or component failures.”

These aftermarket modifications could alter the fuel and spark settings, damage the pistons, and throw off the knock sensor, which Ford technicians have been told to watch out for. They will also see if there have been any aftermarket parts installed, such as exhausts, superchargers, nitrous systems, and intakes, though fuzzy dice and 8-ball shift knobs are still fair game—for now.

“Customization is a big part of the Mustang ownership experience,” said a Ford spokesman. This is designed to alert people to the possible damage and warranty ‘voiding’ one can incur if they modify their vehicles beyond factory specifications.”

Though Mustang enthusiasts shouldn’t be too despondent over the potential loss of their warranty/nuking of their engines: after all, they said the same thing about another cult-status sports car, a vehicle whose popularity and success couldn’t have happened without its endlessly modded counterparts. That car was the Nissan GT-R. And while true-blue Mustang enthusiasts might not get along with GT-R drivers, they can both take heart in knowing that both cars have both survived against such warnings and corporate hand-wringing. You’ll take our cold-air intakes from our cold, dead hands!

Shelby American may pair up with Hertz to offer a “rent-a-racer” program that offers upgraded Mustang GTs for enthusiast-oriented consumers. The Shelby Mustang would be offered in two traditional configurations: black and gold or white and gold. The Mustang would be powered by the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine cranking out 412-hp coupled with an automatic transmission.

The companies teamed up in 1966 to produce 1,000 copies of the performance mustang and did so again, forty years later with the GT-H. Currently, Hertz offers the Mustang GT as part of the “Adrenaline” collection, but a Shelby variant hasn’t been available recently.

Shelby has not finalized the potential 2012 program so we will have to see what happens!

Going to the highest bidder this year at the Young Eagles Auction will be this one-of-a-kind Blue Angels 2011 Ford Mustang GT. For the past four years, Ford Motor Company has worked in collaboration with the EAA Young Eagles Program to build a one-of-one aviation-themed vehicle for auction. This year, they’ll be honoring the Centennial of Naval Aviation by drawing inspiration from the Blue Angels for their Mustang GT.

Famous for their in-air antics, the Blue Angels aviation demonstration team clearly had heavy influences on this unique Mustang. The exterior features a unique blue-chrome finish, accented by yellow gloss accents and the infamous Blue Angels logo and crest scripted across the side. Under the hood is a 5.0L V8 supercharged powerplant that pushes out 500-hp. In addition, Ford also outfitted the Mustang with their handling package, performance exhaust, racetrack brake components and a fancy set of mesh wheels.

Ford is looking to increase its popularity in the Japanese market with a special edition Mustang V6 Sport Appearance. Production for this special edition Japanese Mustang will be limited to 50 units total, 25 going to the coupe and 25 for the convertible. The Sport Appearance Mustang mainly consists of accessories, leaving the 3.7L V6 power plant untouched at 309-hp and 279 ft-lbs of torque.

The V6 Sport Appearance will be available in two special colors, Performance White and Grabber Blue. Both of the colors come with special pin stripes on the side and on the hood scoop. In addition, a rear trunk spoiler is added to give the Mustang a sportier appearance (we’re not making this up) while the 18-inch chrome wheels find their way home with 235/50/18 rubber. On the inside, the special edition Mustang will sport leather interior.

Based on today’s conversation rates, the special edition coupe will run $54,250 while the convertible is $63,000.
