Horsepower and torque numbers for the 2015 Ford Mustang were made official yesterday, and now more information on the car’s performance package are out.

Only the EcoBoost turbo four cylinder and V8-powered Mustangs will be available with the package, in either coupe or convertible form. Adding the package will bring a host of changes to make this muscle car handle better at the race track, including revised springs, upgraded engine cooling, new bushings, monotube rear dampers, a beefier rear anti-roll bar and a K-brace under the hood.

To add the package to an EcoBoost Mustang, customers will have to part with $1,995. In addition to everything listed above, each Mustang variant has some unique performance pack features. For the EcoBoost, these are 13.9-inch front rotors stopped be four-piston, aluminum fixed-brake calipers, while in the back the car has single-piston, iron floating calipers with 13.0-inch rotors. A 3.55:1 axle ratio is fitted, sending power out to Pirelli 255/40R19 Y-speed-rated tires fit to 19-inch aluminum wheels finished in Ebony black.

The performance package for the GT has more horsepower to stop, and is therefore stepped up over the EcoBoost package. The $2495 package brings along six-piston Brembo brake calipers clamping 15-inch rotors in the front, while the rears are shared with the EcoBoost. The axle ratio on this car is 3.73:1, and a Torsen differential is used. The front tires are also shared with EcoBoost package, but the rears are 275/40R19 Pirelli rubber. A strut-tower brace and a unique front splitter complete the package.

According to Ford, the 2015 Mustang GT consistently beat a 2013 Mustang Boss 302 during testing, a sure sign that the new Mustang will be a great performer on race day.

2015 Ford Mustang Performance

Ford is hard at work putting the finishing touches on its hotly anticipated 2015 Mustang, which is expected to go on sale this fall. Regrettably we haven’t been offered any time in the driver’s seat but we did get the next best thing: a chance to ride shotgun for a few hot laps.

Ok, being a passenger isn’t all that great. It’s like teasing your dog by dangling a juicy steak a few inches above his nose but never giving him a taste. We were so close to driving the car yet so far at the same time. Still, here’s what we gleaned from our brief experience.

2015-Ford-Mustang-Performance-43.JPG2.3-LITER ECOBOOST

Undoubtedly the most interesting powerplant offered is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. This efficiency-focused powerplant promises a stout 310 ponies and an even more appealing 320 lb-ft of torque.

It sports all latest performance-enhancing goodies like variable camshaft timing, direct fuel injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger for rapid response at low RPM. Meanwhile, features like a forged steel crankshaft, upgraded valve seats, piston cooling jets and a cylinder-head integrated exhaust manifold ensure long-term durability.

But how well does it work in the 2015 Mustang? After a brief ride along it seems like this could really be the car’s volume engine.

From inside the cabin, this powerplant is surprisingly loud during acceleration, and the noises it provides are unexpectedly throaty. But you can’t outsmart physics. There simply aren’t enough power strokes per crankshaft revolution to imbue the EcoBoost Mustang a guttural voice. Engineers have probably done everything they can to make it sound good, but it’s still a four-banger.

SEE ALSO: 2015 Ford Mustang Curb Weights Revealed

It’s the same story outside. The exhaust snarls appropriately for a performance coupe but you’ll never confuse it with the GT version, which is powered by a thundering 5.0-liter V8.

Acceleration provided by the turbo-four is strong and the engine seems to kick pretty hard right off idle. To be a proper pony car this powerplant had to deliver a responsive experience and it appears to be able.

2015-Ford-Mustang-Performance-21.JPG

Underway, a little vibration is noticeable in the car’s floor but it’s only a minor resonance. Curiously there’s no noise tube to amplify the engine’s ruckus; it’s all natural.

As for the chassis squat and dive are well controlled during hard acceleration and even harder barking. The body stays extremely flat through corners, even while traversing Ford’s Dearborn test track, which has several prominent elevation changes.

Talking with one of Ford’s veteran test drivers he said the new independent rear suspension permits you to roll on the throttle much sooner since it lets the car to put the power to the pavement more effectively than the live axle that supports today’s model.

Naturally the brakes are drastically improved as well. They allow you to decelerate later in corners and ought to be much more resistant to fade

2015-Ford-Mustang-Performance-33.JPG5.0-LITER V8

The noise, the torque, the top-end pull! Ford’s Coyote V8 has always been a stunner and it’s been made even better for 2015.

This is the top-dog engine in the new Mustang, for now at least, and it pulls like a beast. Jab the throttle and the car just rockets ahead. There’s ample twist in the basement and tons of high-RPM horsepower. The way it pulls it seems like it could rev to 20,000 RPM.

Output should clock in at 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Today’s five-oh delivers 420 ponies and 390 units of twist.

Curiously that extra grunt was not provided by any single change; engineers worked the powerplant over thoroughly, making small but meaningful upgrades where necessary.

And one of the most interesting tweaks is the change they made to the engine’s intake ports. They’re essentially copies of the ones used in the Boss 302 Mustang and they’re huge. You can cram at least three fingers into each one. Additionally the cams are basically cribbed from the Boss and feature a massive 13 millimeters of lift.

SEE ALSO: 2015 Ford Mustang Power Numbers Released

The engine’s variable cam timing setup has been tweaked as well. It provides a massive amount of adjustability, anywhere between ZERO valve overlap to more than what’s found in a top-fuel dragster. This is part of what makes the engine idle so smoothly yet pull like a jet engine at high speeds.

2015-Ford-Mustang-Performance-35.JPG

Additionally the 5.0-liter features butterfly valves in the intake runners or “charge motion control valves” in Ford parlance. These little plates partially obstruct the intake ports at lower engine RPM to induce tumble and swirl for enhanced fuel-air mixing. This improves idle quality and fuel economy while cutting emissions. Curiously, this engine makes monster power without direct fuel injection, which is an expensive addition.

2015-Ford-Mustang-Performance-03.JPGODDS AND ENDS

Of course there’s a third engine option in the new Mustang. The entry-level powerplant is a tried-and-true 3.7-liter V6, which we did not get to experience on the test track. In the 2015 car it will deliver an even 300 horses with 280 lb-ft of torque. Power is down by five compared to the outgoing model because the new car’s hood has been lowered by 35 millimeters, which necessitated redesigning the intake manifold.

Both a manual and automatic transmission are offered in the new ‘Stang and each has six forward speeds. Like the V8 engine they’ve been reworked as well.

The stick should be more reliable and provide smoother shifting thanks to redesigned linkage; the auto-box now features paddle shifters and is both stiffer and lighter.

The 2015 Ford Mustang appears to have all the right ingredients. It’s pretty, powerful and appears to drive very well, plus gives customers lots of options when they go to buy. On paper it looks like a smashing success. Now all we have to do is drive one to find out.

We could be seeing a lot more prototype racing from Ford in the near future.

According to a report from Sportscar365, the American automaker is looking to expanding its sports car racing efforts that could bring Ford back to the Le Mans 24 Hours race. The company is currently evaluating a factory GT program along with consideration for an ongoing LMP2 engine supply program. Currently, Ford is supplying its EcoBoost engine used in the TUDOR Championship DP cars (above). Rumor has it that the GTE project is centered around the latest Ford GT production model, which could launch as a 2016 model year.

Ford has owned the sales crown in the half-ton market for a long time and is known for building a utilitarian truck for working men.

The F-150 got a major overhaul in 2004, receiving an entirely new squared-off look that was underpinned by a new fully boxed frame. Two extra inches were added to the sides of the bed, making the entire truck taller and larger. The new frame and suspension improved its ride while reducing cab vibration and noise. Safety ratings also vastly improved for the 2004-2008 trucks.

It’s hard to argue with sales and the F-150 has sold more than the Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram for decades. That reputation of being the sales king adds to the allure of the F-150, as buyers trust that sales numbers represent quality.

If searching for a 2004 F-150, you will find two different body styles, as the previous generation of F-150 was carried over into 2004 as the Heritage Edition to fill in the gap before the new tucks arrived. These trucks were only available in SuperCab or SuperCrew configurations.

Two engines were available at launch in the all-new 04′ F-150: either the 4.6-liter Triton V8 that was carried over from the previous truck producing 231 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque, or an updated version of the 5.4-liter V8 that featured three valves per cylinder rather than the previous engine’s two. The new engine pumped out 15 percent more power, making 300 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a four-speed automatic.

In 2005, a 4.2-liter V6 with a manual transmission option joined the list, making 202 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and a flex fuel capable version of the 5.4-liter V8 was introduced in 2006. Powertrain enhancements continued in 2007 with the 4.6-liter V8 getting a 17-hp bump up to 248.

The final drive ratios offered on the big V8 included 3.31:1,  3.55:1,  3.73:1 and 4.10:1. On the smaller V8, you could get a 3.55:1  or a 3.73:1.

2006-Ford-F-150-2.jpg

Trim Packages

Five different trim packages were available: the XL, STX,  XLT, off-road specific FX4 and luxurious Lariat. In 2005, the luxurious south-western themed King Ranch joined the ranks, while in 2006 the Harley Davidson Edition was brought into the fleet. 2007 brought along some slight style tweaks to both the XLT and Lariat.

The F-150 came as a two-door regular cab, a super cab model with two small rear-hinged back doors and a super crew model with four full-sized doors. A straight-wall styleside bed or a flareside bed that includes sculpted sheet metal around the wheel wells were both available on the F-150. With them, three different lengths could be had, 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet or eight feet.

2006-Ford-F-150-Interior.jpgTop 3 Reasons to Buy

1. Solid handling thanks to new frame.

2. Luxury trim packages (King Ranch, Lariat, Harley).

3. A multitude of configurations with three different engines, three bed lengths, two bed styles and three cab styles.

Top 3 Problem Areas

2006-Ford-F-150-5.jpg

1. Cam phaser issues on 5.4-liter Triton V8.

2. Window issues on earlier trucks.

3. Spark plug issues.

Before you Buy

There are a few different recalls to watch for with the 2004 through 2008 F-150. The first only affects the Heritage edition 2004 trucks and is for corroding fuel tank straps that can cause the tank to fall off or the fuel lines to become disconnected. The next recall affects the 2004 through 2006 trucks, and is to fix the driver side front airbag which can inadvertently deploy.

Premature brake wear on the 2005 and 2006 F-150 prompted a recall as well, while insufficient grease applied to the windshield wiper motor output shaft caused a second recall on the 2006 truck.

The most common problem reported has to do with the windows on early model year trucks, mainly from 2004 and 2005. The power window regulators fail, causing the window glass to fall inside the door.

The cam phaser issue is widespread and usually manifests itself as a clicking, chugging or knocking sound from the engine. If this problem is found, it is best to have the cam phaser replaced. Many Ford dealers advised customers to do nothing about the problem, which often resulted in complete engine failure.

As for the spark plugs, they commonly break when being removed. Once broken, extracting the remaining bits can be very hard to get out, and costs at a dealership will skyrocket because of this.

Overall, it seems best to avoid the Triton 5.4-liter V8 in the F-150, as it was riddled with issues that cost customers big bucks.

2006-Ford-F-150-2

Best Bang For Your Buck

Ford has long been known for the its luxury trucks and special editions, making the King Ranch or Harley Davidson Edition particularly good choices because there is nothing truly competitive to them from that same era. These trucks pack many of the amenities still available today, like a backup camera, leather seats and rear-seat entertainment. However, the XL and XLT models will be the most common, and are likely to be the cheapest used F-150s you can find.

As a general rule of thumb, try to avoid the 2004 and 2005 F-150, and focus on finding a 2006 through 2008. These later model trucks seem to have a lot less complaints and issues than the early trucks did.

For each competition, the company will partner with local authorities and experts to address different issues at the respective location. Each contest will be judged by a panel of Ford executives involved in research mobility solutions in addition to local experts.

Those in the U.S. will want to check out the Los Angeles Parking Lots 2.0 Challenge that hopes to take parking into the 21st century by rethinking and repurposing outdoor surface parking lots in order to increase their variety of uses and aesthetic value. The submission period for the LA challenge will run from July 15 to October 14, with winners announced in November.

The challenges in Mumbai, Lisbon and Los Angeles will offer prizes totaling $30,000 for each challenge, with a grand prize of $15,000 for the winner of each. In the Argentina challenge, the winner will receive a scholarship for an Entrepreneur Postgraduate at an Argentine university and a trip to the U.S. to meet Ford mobility engineers as well as attending the Detroit Auto Show. The prizes for the remaining challenges will be announced at a future date.

“Reaching out to local stakeholders lets Ford more effectively address the diverse mobility challenges around the world,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford’s chief technical officer and vice president, Research and Innovation. “Launching our Innovate Mobility Challenge Series in eight different regions will bring global and local players together in the pursuit of one goal, which is a smarter and more efficient transportation network for the future.”

The government agency is looking into the 2004 through 2007 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Marauder after receiving five complaints, one of which includes an injury. The problem is a heat shield which can dislodge and obstruct the steering shaft, causing the steering to stiffen or lock up.

In one case, a 2004 Crown Victoria rolled over after the driver said that the steering locked up. In other complaints, drivers claim that the steering becomes very stiff and hard to operate.

Ford has already recalled many of these vehicles that operate in States that use road salt over seizing of the lower intermediate shaft.

Ford says it will cooperate with the investigation. If a systemic problem is found, another recall will be issued.

Following Ford’s announcement about reduced fuel economy ratings, the average mileage of new vehicles being purchased sank in June.

According to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), the average fuel economy of new cars purchased last month was 25.5 MPG, which is a 0.1 MPG drop from May when the industry hit an all-time high.

UMTRI didn’t attribute the decline to Ford but acknowledged in a press release that the decrease did account for the company’s recent announcement. Ford’s adjustment would matter to the overall rating, but wouldn’t be a major determining factor in the shift either.

Despite the drop, average fuel economy is still significantly higher than in October, 2007 when UMTRI began gathering data. In general, new cars are rated to return an average of 5.4 MPG more as of last month than when the study began. Greenhouse gas emissions are also down by 20 percent since 2007.

Last month, Ford announced that it would downgrade advertised fuel economy on six of its vehicles including the C-Max and Fusion hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

Ford Saves Water

Clean, safe water is a precious resource that’s easy to take for granted until you don’t have access to it. In recent years Ford has worked to dramatically reduce the amount of H2O consumed during vehicle development and production at its global facilities

Underscoring this push is an uncomfortable truth: about one in seven people around the world live without access to fresh drinking water.

While speaking at the company’s annual Trend Conference Todd Walton, manager of their environmental quality office said, “Ford has made significant progress in water conservation.” He pointed out that since the year 2000 they’ve reduced consumption by 62 percent. That equates to a savings of roughly 10.6 billion gallons.

The first steps Ford took to save water were enacted at their stamping and assembly plant in Cuautitlán, Mexico, which is located in a desert area. As a result of their efforts consumption was reduced by 58 percent between 2000 and 2013.

The company is doing similar things at other facilities around the world. For instance they re-purpose all non-potable water at their plant in Chennai, Ind. “We recycle 100 percent of the waste water,” Walton said. They even collect rain during monsoon season to use it during dry spells.

To further this conservation effort Ford is planning on involving companies it does business. “Let’s share best practices with suppliers,” said Walton. If they can cut the amount of water consumed during the manufacture of vehicle components the savings can become even greater.

Years of pushing to conserve water has helped Ford top Interbrand’s Best Global Green Brands 2014 list; the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker was number one, beating stiff competition from companies like Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

To expedite testing, eliminate driver fatigue and ultimately improve vehicle quality, Ford is turning to robotic technology as a way to put its products through their paces.

Ford-Robotic-Transit-Van-10.JPGProving grounds bring to mind high-speed driving, rugged off-road courses and vehicle components failing in spectacular fashion. But the reality of durability testing is probably much more mundane. Drivers have to evaluate things like fuel consumption, low-speed handling and towing capabilities, to say nothing of going lap, after lap, after lap over punishing road surfaces that rattle the teeth out of your skull.

In fact some of the testing done today is simply too severe for humans to withstand. To eliminate repetitive-stress injuries engineers at Ford have essentially managed to replace test drivers with servos, sensors and high-end electronics.

The company’s robotic driving technology allows individuals to remotely pilot vehicles over some of the most punishing terrain imaginable without leaving the comfort of their desks.

Routes are pre-programmed into the cars or trucks undergoing evaluation and they follow these circuits until engineers are satisfied with the results. Vehicles are tracked by both cameras and GPS, which is accurate to plus or minus 1 inch.

The “driver” keeps an eye on the vehicles being tested and can remotely start or stop them as necessary; they don’t even have to be on site to perform these duties. The Transit van Ford demonstrated this technology in was being piloted by someone about 30 miles away. Additionally one person can “drive” up to eight vehicles at once.

Robotic testing allows the company to accelerate development times without sacrificing quality; it also helps them create even more challenging durability tests.

So far Ford has netted a 17 percent improvement in drive time by using this remote-control technology. To date it’s been used on numerous vehicles including the new Transit van, Lincoln Navigator and Ford F-150; it can be used on anything that has an automatic transmission.
