After a series of lukewarm SS models in the past undermined the public’s impression of the moniker (Malibu Maxx SS, anyone?), Chevrolet now vows to reserve the SS badge for high performance models only. It will not be stamped onto the performance trim Chevrolet Sonic.

“It would take a lot more air going through that engine for an SS, and there is no SS in the works,” says Lead Development Engineer for the 2012 Sonic, John Buttermore. Nonetheless, Buttermore promised a number of performance packages that will be available in 2013 that will enhance the driving experience of the 1.4-liter turbo, six-speed manual Sonic.

Currently Chevy offers a selection of Z-Spec accessories for the Sonic so owners can customize their rides.

At the annual Worthersee Tour GTI Meet next week, Volkswagen will unveil a wide-body GTI Excessive edition concept. The car will feature a flared fenders and a complete areo kit, as well as a wider track. In addition a new spring and shock setup will take the place of the standard setup, while larger brakes will be found inside 19-inch wheels fitted with semi-click tires. The car’s 2.0T engine will remain untouched, with the exception of a light weight exhaust system. At this point the car is still just a concept and we expect it to stay that way, with VW often showing wild and wacky concepts (like the Bentley W12 powered GTI from a few years back) at the Worthersee Tour. Some of the car’s modifications, however, are expected to be offered as dealer upgrades.

Unfortunately the car is being kept under wraps until next week with the photo above showing another model VW will display – which is set for production. Titled the VW Golf GTI Adidas edition it gets a set of 18-inch wheels, rear LED lights from the Golf R, as well as special interior and exterior Adidas theemed details. Set to go on sale in June, just 4,410 Adidas editions are set to be offered.
