According to Hyundai America’s CEO John Krafcik, the Korean automaker is planning to bring a battery-powered electric vehicle to the American market in the near future.

Hyundai has just revealed its first ever electric car, the BlueOn, based on the small i10 hatchback. Able to travel up to 87 miles on a single charge it’s capable of a top speed of 80 mph.

The initial plan is to roll out several units to government agencies later this year before offering the vehicle to the general public in 2012. Hyundai won’t say which markets the car will go on sale in, but it does intend to build as many as 2,500 in the first year.

Between now ans then Hyundai will work to set up a charging infrastructure in South Korea where the government has announced plans to replace up to 20 percent of the gasoline-powered vehicles on the road with electric ones.
