Oh Hollywood has such an imagination, and it appears that Acura can be just as creative as the best of them. The Japanese automaker has been assisting in the upcoming The Avengers film by creating a completely fictional, one-off super car for Iron Man Tony Starks.

This $9.2-million super car was spotted at the Sundance Film Festival sporting a Monroney sticker that you’d be used to seeing at any dealership lot. The vehicle is Pallidium-powered with an 80,000 TOHC 32-valve engine with titanium-forged block and nitrous (Hollywood has to have nitrous) fuel-injection system mated to a nine-speed HYPER-shift transmission. The brake calipers are diamond quartz while the steering wheel has a palm-scan ID.

The list of high-tech features continues on with advanced radar-deflecting capabilities with wave modifier, bulletproof hyper-traction tires, night-vision HUD windshield, and anti-ballistic shielding body panels.

What’s most interesting about all of this is Audi had formerly collaborated heavily with the Iron Man movies, including their own contest back in 2010 but now it’s Acura’s turn in the Hollywood spotlight. How fickle you are Tony, how fickle you are.

Back in April we posted about Audi teaming up with Stark Expo for the Tony Stark Innovation Challenge as a way to help promote Audi’s involvement in Iron Man 2. A winner has finally been announced with Natan Linder receiving the grand prize with his LuminAR invention. An MIT Graduate student, Linder entered the competition with high hopes and an aspiring project that really appeals to us tech-nerds.

The premise of Linder’s invention is a digital bulb with built-in Internet technology to project web content onto any surface. The addition of a robotic lamp arm makes LuminAR the ultimate mobile Internet projector. With the aid of the $15,000 grand prize, Linder plans to fully develop his innovative idea within three to five years. Though he’s a little ambitious in claiming they’ll be as popular as everyday light fixtures, we can see the appeal to the general public for something like this.

“The Tony Stark Innovation Challenge has fulfilled Audi’s goal to provide support to a forward-thinking innovator who can make the world a better place through technology,” said Scott Keogh, CMO of Audi of America. “LuminAR is a progressive product that brings technology closer to the user.”

Remember sneaking a light underneath your bed sheet to play your portable gaming system when you were young? Well, we guess the next generation will just be hanging out on the Web late at night underneath their beds. Wonder if Linder has any plans to ensure certain… entertaining web content will be viewable? We mean YouTube videos of course, get your mind out of the gutter.

Check out the video of Natan Linder’s winning innovation after the break.

Iron Man 2 is due to release in theaters across North America on May 7th and the marketing machine is still spinning its wheels at high rpm. First those in charge introduced The Stark Motor Racing Team and now they have teamed up with Audi to introduce The Tony Stark Innovation Challenge.

In an effort to promote “Better Living through Technology”, this contest calls for the world’s most creative minds to submit in videos up to two minutes long with the following criteria:

  • How to make the world a better place by solving a problem or improving an existing solution
  • Articulate and demonstrate expertise of the “better living through technology” philosophy
  • Have the scalability and adoptability to potentially change the way we live
  • Showcase innovation, adventure, and intelligence worthy of Audi and Tony Stark
  • Entice the social network; viewer ratings will determine top entries

The video submission period opens on April 28th, 2010 at 12:01 a.m. PT and ends on June 9th, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Public voting takes place through the entire video submission period but extends to June 13th, 2010 for all those later entries. The selection of the potential finalist videos will be done right away and set by June 16th, 2010 and then notifications and interviews will be conducted between June 17th, 2010 to June 25th, 2010. The winners will be announced on the week of June 28th, 2010.

So what does the grand prize consist of? Well, Audi promises a four-day trip for two to California to enjoy the Tony Stark lifestyle, but we see no mention of beautiful women such as Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow. To say we’re a little disappointed is an understatement, but the rest of the prizes are pretty impressive – especially considering the goal of this is to help change the world.

  • $15,000 to develop the winning idea
  • A day at the Audi Sports Car Experience driving an Audi R8
  • VIP day with the ICON aircraft team with flight and water testing of the ICON A5 aircraft
  • Helicopter tour of Los Angeles
  • Transportation in a brand new 2011 Audi A8
  • Luxury hotel accommodations, dinners at Los Angeles’ top restaurants
  • Spa treatments, tailored cocktail attire and grooming to perfect his or her Stark style
  • Tour of Audi Design Center in Santa Monica Airport
  • Experience documented and featured on

So for all those with brilliant and original ideas on how to make this world a better place, submit away. We still think if Scarlett Johansson or Gwyneth Paltrow were regularly available to the general public, we’d all have better lifestyles.

In 2008, Iron Man came out with Robert Downey Jr. playing the fitting role of Tony Stark. Previews and trailers have been swarming all over the Internet for Iron Man 2 where Downey will once again assume the role of Iron Man with new friends and villains at his side. One of the trailers show Stark passing time racing in an open-wheel car and taking a hot lap before Whiplash spoilers his fun on the track. It seems as if this scene has sparked some interest with Royal Purple, manufacturer of synthetic oils, to team up with Marvel Studios and cross promote on the new movie. The result is The Stark Motor Racing Team, a brilliant marketing program that now ties a comic book to a movie to reality.

The team is comprised of five different racers from five different demographics, all campaigning Royal Purple, Stark Motor Racing and Iron Man 2 sponsorship decals on their weapons of choice while on the track. Chris Prey will be leading the way in Grand AM Road Racing in his Porsche Boxster 986, while Stephen Verdier will be campaigning his 2008 Subaru STI sideways in the Formula DRIFT series. Speed isn’t reserved for just things with four wheels however, as David Hope and Melissa Paris will be campaigning their motorcycles in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles and AMA Road Racing, respectively. Last but not least, Joey Stathas Jr. will have his hands full in Monster Trucks in his 2009 Chevy. All of these racers will be seen nationwide for 2010 all racing under the Stark Motor Racing Team program. We’ve also spotted Iron Man 2 branding on Royal Purple products.

Hopefully these type of sponsorships will lead to bigger and better things for all forms of motorsports. We feel that this was a real cool opportunity with the movie-makers taking a comic book to the big screen and now marketing gurus taking the movie into reality. Who would have ever thought Stark Motor Racing Team would be a reality?

While Audi has made no secret that it will be releasing a convertible version of its V10-powered R8 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the German luxury car maker has kept the car under wraps. Even the test mules spotted lapping the Nürburgring were well-masked.

Now, thanks to the intrepid reporters at U.K.’s AutoExpress we may just have an accurate idea of what the drop-top 2010 Audi R8 Spider/Cabriolet/Roadster will look like. These spy photos photos were taken during shooting of an upcoming sequel to the popular Iron Man movie.

If you recall from the first flick actor Robert Downey Jr. had an Audi R8 in his stable of cars, and if you look closely at these photos you’ll see Downey behind the wheel.

The car is expected to keep the same 525hp, V10 engine as the new coupe but be slightly slower due to the extra weight added to help stiffen up the roofless chassis. In terms of design changes, we can see that the side blades have been removed, showing a more sculpted side to the car, while the rear clamshell gets some aggressive renting.

The R8 Roadster will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September.
