Easily the most beautiful piece of sheetmetal unveiled at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, the Lexus LF-LC Concept stunned crowds with its technology, style and mystery – hinting at a future super coupe that’s still a few years off.

Created by the brand’s Calty design studio in Southern California, one can’t help but wonder how a vehicle like this moves from concept to reality. To answer that question the Toyota luxury division has commissioned short film that entitled “Resonance of Passion” that is, in and of itself, is a work of art.

Looking to reclaim its spot as America’s number one luxury automaker by sales, Lexus is planning an extensive product rollout in 2012 that will include nine new or updated models, plus three F-Sport cars. On the list are the new GS350 and GS450h, while later in the year we’ll see updated versions of the ES350, IS250 and IS350, as well as the LS460 and LS600h. In addition, an updated LX model arrived in 2012.

Lexus is forecasting a 21 percent sales increase for the year with Lexus GS Mark Templin telling Automotive News, “We will grow more than any other luxury brand this year.”

Beyond refreshing or introducing new versions of current models Lexus will look to add more cars and more versions of existing cars, likely starting with the CT200h hybrid hatchback – of which a higher performance version has long been rumored.

In addition, Lexus is still reportedly planning a new seven-seat crossover as the brand looks to phase out its body-on-frame SUVs with Templin commenting that he expects the brand to have moved almost entirely to car-based platforms for its “trucks” by 2025.

And finally there’s the coupe segment, which Lexus gave an impressive preview of at last week’s Detroit Auto Show, with the LF-LC Concept. A production version of that car could arrive in the medium-term with Lexus Japan’s global product boss Karl Schlicht telling Auto News that if it were to make it to dealerships, expect a price point between $100,000 and $130,000. (See AutGuide’s First Look Video of the LF-LC here).

But the design shown in the LF-LC may foreshadow more coupes than just one, with Templin commenting that he’d like an SC430 replacement, priced around the $70,000 mark. In addition, several rumors have suggested Lexus is also planning a GS Coupe to compete with rival Mercedes and its E-Class two-door.

Amidst all the product add-ons there will likely be one model removed from the Lexus lineup, the slow-selling HS. With sales dropping 73 percent last year to just 2,864 units its not surprising that Toyota Motor Sales USA president Jim Lentz commented that, “It’s a car that doesn’t necessarily fit the long-term needs of the brand in the U.S.”

Easily one of the stars of this year’s Detroit Auto Show, and arguably the best looking, the Lexus LF-LC hybrid coupe concept is a bold look at the future styling direction of the brand, while also hinting at a new model.

With styling cues from the new GS and the LFA supercar, there’s plenty of innovation packed into it – though Lexus is being extremely quiet as to what the powertrain is, apart from commenting that it’s a next-generation hybrid drive system that will deliver both fuel economy and performance.

For more on the LF-LC, watch the video below.

There seems to be a new wave of thinking spreading through Toyota and luxury brand Lexus, which at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, manifested itself in this, the LF-LC Concept.

Starting out as a brief by the Lexus Center in Japan, for the Calty (US) design studio to come up with a futuristic hybrid coupe concept, the LF-LC is without question one of the most stunning pieces of mobile sculpture at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

It’s lines combine trapezoidal shapes with organic curves, the front and rear ensembles taking an exaggerated stance on Lexus current’ design language. Both are dramatic. At the front, an aluminum surround gives the grille an almost 3-dimensional look, flanked by functional air scoops, while outback, the car’s rump resembles a combat jet on take-off, thanks to rear lights with inner illumination that resemble afterburners.

Probably the coolest aspect of all is the glass roof, which features a cantilevered pillar and glass meeting glass, a design aspect you’d more often find on trendy coffee tables, yet it in this application it actually works quite well.

Inside, details run to plenty of leather, suede and brushed metal. There’s also a pair of Liquid Crystal Display 12.3-inch touch screens that control climate and info-entertainment functions, plus further touch screen operation for the windows, seats and mirrors. There’s also a special remote touch screen device that allows the driver to operate controls without changing line of sight or position.

Transmitting power to the rear wheels is a version of the Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, which according to Lexus group vice president and general Manager Mark Templin “promises a rewarding driving experience that is also kinder to the environment.”

Let’s hope we see more stuff like this coming down the pike from Lexus; concept and production machines that really provide both excitement and practicality while remaining relevant to the fast changing automotive landscape. The LF-LC is certainly a very good start.

And if Templin’s remarks are a sign, he boldly declared that the LF-LC is, “a sign of something big” at Lexus.

It’s quite possibly the most exciting debut of this year’s Detroit Auto Show and after a few teaser images, followed by the release of two photos yesterday, we can now share the Lexus LF-LC concept from its many stunning angles.

The 2+2 luxury coupe will be powered by a hybrid drivetrain, though it’s not clear what sort of power it will make. In a brief statement released yesterday, however, Lexus hinted that this most certainly will not be a Prius, stating that the car, ““is envisioned as offering Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive to deliver both driving performance and fuel efficiency.”

Lexus has released new photos of its stunning new concept car, pointing to the future of the brand’s styling as well as a possible new model. The LF-LC hybrid concept adapts the brand’s new grille, as first seen on the 2013 GS, while looking like a luxurious 2+2 version of the LFA supercar.

Lexus has said little about its new super coupe, although badging on the side has revealed that it is a hybrid. In a brief release Lexus says the car, “is envisioned as offering Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive to deliver both driving performance and fuel efficiency.”

Look for full details to come with the car’s official debut planned for the North American International Auto Show next week.

Hours after photos of the upcoming Lexus super coupe concept leaked onto the net, the Toyota luxury brand has released a full photo of the car, confirming it will be called the LF-LC.

“Crafted from a clean sheet of paper at the request of Lexus headquarters in Japan, the LF-LC blends both high technology and organic shapes to connect the driver to the machine,” said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “The clean lines of the vehicle emphasize motion, creating a distinctive look for this futuristic sport coupe.”

As for the design of the car, it was handled at Lexus’ Calty design studio in Newport Beach, Calif., taking obvious style highlights from the new Lexus GS and the LFA supercar.

Of note, this high-resolution photo reveals that the LF-LC is in fact a hybrid.

The LF-LC will be officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 9th.

Photos of the new Lexus concept car have leaked online, revealing a stunning luxury coupe that is certain to put the Japanese luxury brand back in the spotlight. Called the LF-Lc, it can be seen as a successor to the much-maligned SC model.

Styling cues clearly come from both the LFA supercar and the new GS luxury sedan, though there is no word on what the engine will be. Of note, this concept, unlike most past Lexus concepts, does not contain the signature “h” indicating it is a hybrid.

Lexus will reveal full details of the LF-Lc at it’s world premiere in January at the North American International Auto Show.

Lexus-Concept-Detroit-Auto-show-teaser.jpg

In the run-up to the Detroit Auto Show this January, Lexus has teased a new concept car twice, first showing an aggressive exterior, and then a futuristic interior. Now comes word that the vehicle in question may wear the “LF-LC” badge when it is fully uncovered.

That code says almost all of what we need to know about the car, starting with the LF, which stands for Lexus Future, signifying it is in fact a concept. Next is the second L, which if you take a look at other L models in the Lexus lineup, is a sign that this is a true luxury machine – take the Lexus LS for example.

Finally there’s the C, which is a strong indication that this concept car is a coupe (or perhaps even a convertible).

That said, the LF-LC is likely a concept car aimed at showing the next generation Lexus SC. Of note, there’s no “h” used in the nomenclature, suggesting this model won’t be a hybrid – an unusual move for the luxury brand.
