MX-5-Mazda-Rally

Follow along with team AutoGuide as they look to improve upon their 3rd place finish in last year’s Mazda Adventure Rally. This year, the duo of Mike Schlee and Sami Haj-Assaad are off on another adventure. But to where? And driving what?

Welcome back to AutoGuide’s exploits at the Mazda Adventure Rally. We rejoin team Eunos Cosmo (Sami and Mike) in the final stretch as they look to improve their third place ranking and win $10,000 for their charity, Camp Sunshine.

Telluride, Colorado and Sundance, Utah, the two extremes of our trip today, sit just over 330 miles apart. That is, if you take the easiest, quickest and most painless route there. Today, however, Mike and I will do the exact opposite of that, as we look to stay in the top three of the Mazda Adventure Rally.

Welcome back to AutoGuide’s exploits at the Mazda Adventure Rally. We rejoin team Eunos Cosmo (Sami and Mike) as they hunt for big screen landmarks, highway signs and a trip to an historically hallowed ground. Do they still have a chance at first place? We’ll know soon.

Despite the dizzying altitude, wild roads, gusty winds and the sheer worry of not knowing what you’re doing all the time, the thing that wears on me the most this morning is realizing that despite our best efforts we’re just in third place.

AG-Team-Day2

Welcome back to AutoGuide’s exploits at the Mazda Adventure Rally. We rejoin team Eunos Cosmo (Sami and Mike) after their first full day of driving. After arriving first at checkpoint one, where do they stand now?

While feeling proud of our results in the first section, we fueled up, (the car and ourselves) to hit the road and conquer challenge number two for the day. The challenge involves us hitting the roads between Buena Vista and Ridgeway, and finding the biggest difference in altitude on our route.

Checkpoint

Welcome back to AutoGuide’s exploits at the Mazda Adventure Rally. We rejoin team Eunos Cosmo (Sami and Mike) after they’ve completed the half-way point on the first day of driving.

We made a bee-line out of boulder Colorado and as per our challenge had our eyes on six landmarks, a risky move, as we were warned that five is the average, but Mike and I certainly don’t consider ourselves the average rally team. To help put us in the lead, we targeted the most landmarks that are on the continental divide, netting us bonus points.

Welcome back to AutoGuide’s exploits at the Mazda Adventure Rally. We rejoin team Eunos Cosmo (Sami and Mike) as they prepare to embark on the very first day of driving.

Before sending us off to bed last night, Mazda gave us our objectives for today. Finally, some time to prepare. Mike and I slaved over the reading material, searching for some sort of competitive edge while other teams glossed over the rules and maps before dinner.

Welcome back to AutoGuide’s exploits at the Mazda Adventure Rally. With much of the even still shrouded in mystery, we check back in with Mike and Sami before a busy day of driving tomorrow.

Arriving at the hotel was a simple task. It was one of the only pieces of information Mike and I had prior to setting off. And we didn’t even need to know how to get there as Mazda took care of shuttling us from the airport to our accommodations.

My boss called me a keener once for arriving to an event far earlier than anyone else, but today, being early is literally the only thing I can do to prepare.

Sitting in the gate two- hours prior to my flight taking off is not crazy. It’s being prepared. I’m here early in case there was traffic, or delays, or the usual security nonsense at the way into the airport.

Equipped with a ticket, but no explanation, I’m a little nervous. Mazda essentially said, “you’re going here, for this period of time,” with no details on where exactly we’re going, where we’re staying or what roads what to expect… It’s all a bit chaotic, and I’m worried about being at the mercy of chaos.
