Mazda‘s new CX-5 crossover will arrive at dealers next year, expanding the brand’s crossover range to three models.

With a spate of auto shows between now and then, the brand’s smallest ‘ute could debut at any venue from Frankfurt in September all the way to the New York Auto Show the following March.

The car is expected to change little in terms of design from the Minagi concept (above) which was first shown at Geneva this year. It will get the brand’s new 2.0-liter SkyActiv gasoline engine that is expected to be rated at around 150-hp, while Mazda has said the same engine in the Mazda3 will get 40-mpg highway.

In addition, Mazda could offer a new 2.2-liter diesel in the car, as it has made known plans to sell diesel-powered vehicles in North America.

Well ahead of it’s planned debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March, Mazda has announced the debut of the Minagi crossover concept.

The latest vehicle to take the crossover segment further down-market, the Minagi Concept is rumored to wear the CX-5 badge and will compete in a class of cars popularized by the Nissan Juke. At the recent North American International Auto Show, Hyundai showed the CURB concept, which is also set to hit production as tiny crossover, while the Buick is also rumored to be planning the Encore for this segment – although with a focus more on luxury.

Taking styling from the Shinari concept, it’s a bold new vehicle for Mazda and one that’s likely to come with one of the automaker’s new SKY powertrains.
