Volkswagen revealed the new 2012 Passat the night before the 2011 Detroit Auto Show but we’ve now got the first live photos of the Tennessee-produced mid-sized sedan.

As reported yesterday, the 2012 Volkswagen Passat will be available with three drivetrains, a 170 hp 2.5l five-cylinder engine (with five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, a 140 hp 2.0l TDI Clean Diesel engine (with an estimated fuel economy of 43 mpg) and a 3.6l VR6 featuring 280 hp and an estimated 28 mpg. The Passat VR6 will also come standard with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The Passat will be available in three trims, S, SE and SEL, all with safety features such as Intelligent Crash Response Systems, a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS with braking assistant, and six airbags. Manual transmission models will also get hill climb assist.

The long awaited 2012 Volkswagen Passat has finally been revealed a day ahead of its world premiere at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, looking very much like the recently released 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, sporting the same corporate face and profile in a larger package.

Built at VW’s new Tennesse facility, the Passat’s 191 inche length makes the car larger than a Toyota Camry by 2 inches, a radical departure from the more compact Passats of yesteryear.

Trim levels S, SE and SEL will be offered, with power coming from the corporate 2.5L 5-cylinder engine making 170 horsepower, the 2.0L TDI diesel making 140 horsepower and Volkswagen’s beloved VR6 engine, producing 280 horsepower. The VR6 (and, we presume, the TDI) will come with a DSG dual clutch gearbox, allowing it to run to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds while returning 28 mpg on the highway.

Starting at under $20,000, the Passat is aiming to break out of its niche as a quirky European alternative and finally be taken seriously as a Tier 1 mid-size sedan. The car may have never sold in big numbers, but its superlative interior, interesting powertrains and European street cred were always respected. Hopefully VWs attempt to bring the car hasn’t come at the expense of character.

Jeep may bill its all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee as an off-roader, but the SUV has just been named the ‘Urban Truck of the Year’ by Decisive Media, which publishes, among other things, a magazine named Decisive Auto.

Lyndon Bell, Editor-in-chief of Decisive Auto, declared that “the Jeep’s over-the-road dynamics easily rival that of its competitors’ less capable crossover vehicles. Meanwhile, the Jeep is also perfectly proficient at traversing any terrain. Luxurious interior appointments – along with the fact that drivers aren’t penalized into accepting a lower trim level if they opt for the more fuel-efficient engine – speaks volumes to the way Jeep’s engineers and product planners incorporated 21st century realities into America’s most iconic SUV.” He summed up by saying the [new] Grand Cherokee is “new and improved in every way, while faithfully capturing the spirit of its predecessor.”

Judging of the ‘Urban Car of the Year’ award, was undertaken by Decisive Auto’s on-staff Editors as well as a panel of 15 independent automotive journalists. The award  will be officially presented at the 15th Annual Urban Wheels Awards on January 9th 2011, during the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit.

Mike Manley, President of Chrysler’s Jeep division in response to the announcement, went on record, stating Jeep is pleased that this panel of influential journalists has recognized that the new Grand Cherokee delivers the perfect blend of on-road refinement, superb craftsmanship, world-class design, improved fuel economy, innovative features, and legendary real-world capability.” Score one for the proper off-roaders!

In the car category, the new Chevy Cruze was given the 2011 Urban Car of the Year Award.

Recently a report circulated online claiming that the Hyundai Veloster would debut at the LA Auto Show. The folks in Hyundai’s PR department denied the claims and went so far as to say another “very important” model would be the focal point of their LA Show press conference. (That vehicle is believed to be the new Elantra).

The latest report, from the Detroit Free Press, is claiming (without a source) that the new compact coupe will arrive a month later at the Detroit show. Perhaps, however, this news story is just a way to fish out the real truth. After all, if Hyundai denies this one we can almost be sure the debut is coming in Paris.

It’s long been believed that the upcoming Paris Auto Show would be the venue for the new model, which will slot in below the spot formerly filled by the Tiburon. The Veloster is expected to be powered by a direct-injection 1.6-liter engine making 138-hp and delivering as much as 40-mpg on the highway.
