The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is something of a dark horse in the pickup truck world these days. Currently, it is the only half-ton pickup truck available with a diesel engine. That won’t be true too much longer, but for now Chrysler has the market cornered.
Diesel-powered light duty vehicles (in other words, the sorts of cars and trucks most people buy) are gaining popularity but still make up a sliver of the U.S. automobile market. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI was number two on this week’s list and that underscores the point that oil burners are on the rise.
But the 2014 Mazda3 came in close behind both of those two. Its larger sibling, the Mazda6, will eventually be offered here with a diesel engine although Mazda has delayed bringing that engine to market in the U.S. and Canada twice.
Behind all those, the Audi Allroad was fourth most popularly searched this week. The beefier jacked up version of the A4 comes with increased ground clearance and the company’s venerable quattro all-wheel drive system.
Bringing up the rear, the Subaru Outback was also a big hit this week. Subaru’s sport utility wagon will enter its fifth generation for the 2015 model year and will be sold exclusively with a CVT at that time. Both the four- an six-cylinder options remain.
