Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said in the past that self-driving cars would be on the road by 2020, but in a new speech Ghosn rolled back those expectations.

“Self-driving cars,” he said in a speech at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, “remain a long way from commercial reality.”

But Nissan is still working hard to bring autonomous technology to the forefront, and Ghosn laid out the company’s timeline for its self-driving technology. “By the end of 2016, Nissan will make available the next two technologies under its autonomous drive strategy,” said Ghosn. “We are bringing to market a traffic-jam pilot, a technology enabling cars to drive autonomously – and safely – on congested highways. In the same timeframe, we will make fully-automated parking systems available across a wide range of vehicles.”

SEE ALSO: Nissan Promises Self-Driving Cars by 2020

These technologies are part of Nissan’s goal of relieving drivers of mundane tasks while increasing safety, reducing congestion and lowering emissions.

“This will be followed in 2018 by the introduction of multiple-lane controls, allowing cars to autonomously negotiate hazards and change lanes. And before the end of the decade, we will introduce intersection-autonomy, enabling vehicles to negotiate city cross-roads without driver intervention.”

So by 2020, many Nissan vehicles will be able to aid the driver in most situations, but a fully self-driving car is still far off.

Connected cars are also on the rise, and Nissan has plans have at least 1.5 million vehicles connected to enhanced communications, like wi-fi and cloud-based systems, by next year.

Nissan Announces Unprecedented Autonomous Drive Benchmarks

Seeking to steer drivers toward being ready to accept self-driving cars, Nissan will introduce two new technologies in the near future that will assume vehicle control at low speeds.

“By the end of 2016, Nissan will make available the next two technologies under its autonomous drive strategy,” Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said yesterday during a speech to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. “We are bringing to market a traffic-jam pilot, a technology enabling cars to drive autonomously – and safely – on congested highways. In the same timeframe, we will make fully-automated parking systems available across a wide range of vehicles.”

Driverless car technologies are being developed by companies including Google Inc., Audi, Ford and Nissan among others, but progress is slow. In the U.S., individual states need to settle on regulations for autonomous vehicle technology. California, Nevada, Florida and Michigan re currently the only states that allow driverless cars on public roads.

Most recently, California announced a new set of rules for autonomous vehicles to give automakers developing the technology a more specific list of guidelines.

Nissan will only be getting started when it rolls out the low-seed highway and parking automation systems in 2016, Ghosn said.

“This will be followed in 2018 by the introduction of multiple-lane controls, allowing cars to autonomously negotiate hazards and change lanes. And before the end of the decade, we will introduce intersection-autonomy, enabling vehicles to negotiate city cross-roads without driver intervention.”

Nissan’s official goal is to make autonomous vehicles available by 2020, but realizing the target will mean more than persuading lawmakers that the technology is merited. The Japanese brand and others like it will need to sell customers on the idea of buying a car that can steer, accelerate and stop without driver input and that part might be as big a challenge as any other.

“In pursuit of those goals, Nissan must seize the growth opportunities created by major socio-economic trends affecting the world’s car industry,” added Mr. Ghosn.

Part of that battle might start to fight itself as baby boomers transition deeper into senior citizenship while maintaining a desire for independence. Self-driving cars could play a role in making that possible.  The first baby boomer reached age 65 in January, 2011.

Ghosn also said the advent of megacities – cities with populations above 10 million – will drive demand along with an increasing desire among drivers for increased in-car connectivity.

Deltawing Technologies and Nissan are in a heated lawsuit and one company isn’t afraid to make it public.

Don Panoz and his Deltawing Technologies have been in a lawsuit since last December over alleged intellectual property violations on the Nissan Zeod RC. So far, Deltawing Technologies has designed two different ads attacking Nissan, publishing them both in The Tennessean and Automotive News. Both ads allude to how the Zeod RC is quite similar to the DeltaWing racecar and are open letters to Carlos Ghosn and the Japanese automaker.

According to a report from Autoblog, Deltawing Technologies decided to publish the ads after mediation between the two companies broke down earlier this year. Deltawing originally hopped to settle amicably but when a resolution couldn’t be had, the company decided to fight misconceptions with the general public about the program and lawsuit.

The same engineer, Ben Bowlby, designed both cars. “The work he did belongs to Panoz,” said Deltawing spokesperson Gary Fong. “It’s only his [Bowlby's] design if he patented it.”

The lawsuit is still unsettled and the case is currently in the discovery phase according to Fong.

Forget U-Hauls or borrowing a friend’s pickup truck, I reached out to Nissan and was promptly delivered a shiny new NV 2500, using the new entry to the commercial vehicle segment to facilitate my own new adventure.

During a tumultuous week, I learned a few important things – about this new truck’s capabilities, and about moving a family.

The fate of a new small Nissan sports car and the next-generation Cube are still undecided.

Nissan is having a tough time making a business case for the IDx and the Cube according to Pierre Loing, vice-president of product planning for Nissan Americas.

Based on the recently revealed pair of concept cars, the IDx would be a small rear-wheel drive sports car that would compete with the sub-$30,000 Scion FR-S. “It’s not easy to do, (and) if you do something like this and you manage to do a vehicle at (a low) price, what else would you do on this platform? Because frankly to do a platform for 50,000 or 60,000 (units) a year – it’s not worth it,” Loing told Ward’s Auto.

SEE ALSO: Nissan Details 2015 Lineup

The car hasn’t been canned yet though, with Loing saying that its fate will have to be discussed further, though it won’t here until after 2016 if it does come to fruition.

A business case for the Nissan Cube small hatchback has also been hard to find for the company. The Cube was left absent from a recent unveiling of Nissan’s 2015 model year lineup, although the company has confirmed a brand-new Cube model will be unveiled for Japan in 2016.

The Cube never performed all that great on the market, and sales seriously dropped off in 2013, so whether or not that new model will return to the US remains to to be seen. “We have a model-year ’14 (in the U.S.); there will be an announcement on ’15 to come,” said Loing.

Nissan recently announced changes to its 2015 lineup, with multiple vehicles receiving its D-Step Shift logic technology.

But what exactly is D-Step Shift logic? The technology will be integrated into every CVT-equipped Nissan model for the 2015 model year and its goal is to make the CVT sound and feel less like a CVT. Having been offered on the 2013 four-cylinder Altima and the redesigned 2014 Rogue, D-Step Shift logic can be found on the 2015 Versa, Versa Note, Sentra, Altima V6, Pathfinder and Quest models.

SEE ALSO: Which Continuously-Variable Transmissions Are the Best?

The technology helps create the sensation that a CVT is shifting gears like a traditional automatic transmission even though it isn’t. Of all the automakers in the world, the Nissan  leads the way with CVT use and is hoping D-Step Shift logic not only helps respond to critics of the technology, but help cut down on mistaken complaints that the transmission is failing when it feels as if it isn’t changing gears.

The software changes in the D-Step Shift logic technology causes the CVT to jump ahead slightly in the gear ratios around 4,000 RPMs and helps create a subtle momentary drop in driving force to give it a sense of a gear change.

Sales are also to blame for the discontinuation of both vehicles, with the Cube only selling 10 percent of the model’s peak volume last year. In 2012, the Murano CrossCabriolet peaked with sales of 3,278 units, while in 2013 the model sold just half that number.

A replacement for either vehicles has not been announced by Nissan.

Owners of the all-electric Nissan Leaf currently have access to 2,600 free charging stations across the US, and the company says that number is set to grow.

As part of its “no charge to charge” program, Nissan has announced that it will support the installation of 500 new quick chargers in key Leaf markets across the US, mostly at Nissan dealerships and participating businesses. The program lets Leaf owners take advantage of five different charging networks, ChargePoint, Blink, CarCharging, Aerovironment and NRG eVgo, by using an ‘EZ-Charge’ card.

A quick charging station can provide 80 percent of a charge to a Leaf in about 30 minutes. Currently, Nissan Leaf owners can access charging stations in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Nashville, Phoenix, Dallas, Houton and Washington D.C. In the next year, Nissan will spread quick chargers to at least 15 additional US markets.

To find eligible chargers, customers can visit EZ-Charge.com

Things didn’t get better in 2012 with the Cube’s sales getting cut almost in half at 7,667 units in the U.S. and 318 in Canada. Last year, Nissan saw only 5,461 Cubes sold in the U.S. and 183 in Canada. So far this year, the company has moved 2,294 off dealership lots in the U.S. and a mere 14 in Canada.

Nissan officially confirmed plans today to reveal the all-new 2016 Titan pickup truck in roughly six months during the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

A company spokesman confirmed that the truck will be revealed during the massive auto show. With the upcoming Titan, Nissan is seeking to improve its position in the highly-competitive half-ton truck segment. Part of that plan includes an optional 5.0-liter Cummins diesel V8 expected to offer roughly 300 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan announced its plan in August, 2013 shorlty after poaching luring Ram truck boss Fred Diaz from Chrysler. Further details on the truck are still hazy, but company is expected to offer a six-cylinder starting with the new generation in 2016 as well. Nissan will offer the new truck with a broader range of engines and options to better compete with the rest of the market unlike  the current Titan, which is sold exclusively with a V8.

Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz have officially announced plans for a new manufacturing plant in Mexico.

The companies will be splitting the $1.4-billion cost in half and the new manufacturing plant will be built adjacent to Nissan’s existing plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Both automakers will manufacture vehicles at the new plant based on a shared platform and an estimated 300,000 units will leave the plant annually. In addition, the new plant will add an estimated 5,700 jobs once it hits full production in 2021.

“The Infiniti and Mercedes vehicle will share production and manufacturing but the cars will retain their own independent designs and unique look and feel,” said the two automakers in a statement. “The goal is to increase economies of scale while also maximizing the brand distinctions of the two iconic marques.”

Specific models being built at the new plant were not disclosed, but it will likely be the next-generation Mercedes-Benz A- and B-Class along with the new entry-level Infiniti model previewed in the Q30 concept. The first model to be produced will sport an Infiniti badge in 2017 with Mercedes following in 2018.
