Earlier in the month we reported that Volkswagen was testing their new WRC Polo R with Carlos Sainz behind the wheel, and now there’s video from Sainz’s testing sessions along with the official announcement of VW signing Sebastian Ogier as their first driver for the FIA World Rally Championship alongside Julien Ingrassia as his co-driver.

Ogier finished third in the 2011 WRC and looks to play a pivotal role in shaping the Polo R to become a championship caliber race vehicle. The 2.0L turbocharged Polo R cranks out 296-hp and 285 lb-ft of torque and looks right at home as it tears through its testing. Ogier drove for Citroen in 2011 and won’t be back behind the wheel until 2013 with the Polo R. The 2012 season will be dedicated to developing the Polo into a serious contender.

Volkswagen’s WRC entry in the form of a Polo R is out testing a little over a year before its official competition debut. The Polo R recently got its first bout of testing on a 1.5-mile tarmac track out in the vineyards in Trier, Germany.

Behind the wheel during test was Dakar winner Carlos Sainz and Volkswagen board member Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg; both took turns piloting the WRC car for about 60 miles with Timo Gottschalk as co-driver.

The actual car being used for testing won’t be the final version of the Polo R WRC, as Volkswagen is trying to gather as much data as possible to tweak the final race car before the start of the 2013 season. Both drivers said the car felt very good and its first batch of data is very promising for a real serious contender.

Details are light on the Polo R WRC, but it’s assumed that it’ll have around 300-hp to all four wheels. Volkswagen clearly knows they have their work cut out for them to compete against veterans Ford and Citroen in WRC, but they’re clearly taking the initiative in ensuring they have a fighting chance.

Last year, Volkswagen stirred up some excitement by introducing the 2010 Polo GTI at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show, and this year they’re following it up with an announcement of two R-Line packages for the Polo in addition to an Exclusive Edition for the Passat.

The pair of R-Line packages will be available as an option for the Polo Comfortline and the Polo Highline model, with one of the packages concentrating on the exterior while the other outfits the interior with upgrades.

The exterior R-Line package comes with 16- or 17-inch wheels with wider 215-tires, black gloss finish for the front grille, model-specific front and rear bumpers (based on Comfortline or Highline), a rear diffuser, chrome exhaust tips, a roof spoiler, pair of side skirts, fog lamps and LED license plate illumination. For the Comfortline the exterior R-Line package runs around $2,000 based on today’s conversion rates while the Highline will cost a little less than $1,400.

The interior R-Line package costs a tad over $1,175 for the Polo Comfortline and $620 for the Highline and with it comes a pair of sport seats up front – with Alcantara or leather option – black roof lining, sport leather steering wheel, glossy black dashboard trim and aluminum pedals and door sills.

For the Passat, Volkswagen will be offering an Exclusive Edition based on the Highline trim for the sedan at $44,700 and as a station wagon Variant for $46,300. The Exclusive Edition will outfit the Passat with a set of 18-inch wheels while it sits 0.6-inch lower thanks to sportier suspension. On the inside, where most of the changes are, VW accents the Passat with Nappa leather seats in a chocolate brown shade with contrast-colored stitching in Pepper White. The door panels and steering wheel also benefits from leather while special floor mats and a combination of wood and aluminum trim round off the accents.

At any rate, hopefully the R-Line package is just a teaser for the upcoming Polo R model that VW should be adding to its lineup next year.

One of Volkswagen’s premieres set for the LA Auto Show next week is the newly-launched Polo BlueMotion. Now VW has no plans to offer this European model in North America, but the automaker is using the debut to promote its message that diesel is an immediate solution to using less fuel, while continuing to test the U.S. market’s reaction to the sub-compact Polo, which fits in underneath the Golf in VW’s European lineup.

Offered with several different gasoline and diesel engines in Europe, the Polo BlueMotion is the most efficient of the bunch with a 75-hp 1.2-liter turbo-diesel engine that gets a incredible 71.3 mpg! Volkswagen claims that with a 12 gallon fuel tank, this diesel Polo can travel 847 miles.

The Polo is eventually set to reach North America, but not until 2012. And when it does arrive it is expected to be slightly larger with an elongated frame. VW’s biggest issue with importing the Polo is that due to the cost of shipping and manufacturing the vehicle in Europe, it might not be able to compete with sub-compact offerings, like those from Honda and Toyota. The German automaker’s reluctance to bring the Polo over so far does seem odd as Volkswagen practically pioneered the small car segment in the United States in the past. VW also risks fighting an up-hill battle in 2012 as most automakers already have sub-compact models on the markets and those who don’t, like Ford and Mazda, are about to introduce their new small cars (the Fiesta and Mazda2) at the LA Auto Show.

We’ll be sure to bring you any updates on the Polo for North America, with live coverage from the LA Auto Show starting December 2nd.

Volkswagen will debut a new set of ultra-efficient BlueMotion diesels at the Frankfurt Auto Show in just two weeks. Included in the list are the new BlueMotion versions of the Polo, Golf and Passat.

First up is the ultra-efficient BlueMotion Polo sub-compact, which is powered by a 75hp 1.2-liter diesel engine. Improving even on the already impressive Polo TDI that gets 56 mpg, this new car gets 71.3 mpg! Equipped with a 12 gallon (45 liter) tank the BlueMotion Polo has a theoretical travel distance of 847 miles (1,363 kilometers).

Next is the BlueMotion Golf, which gets 61.9 mpg, while still producing 105hp and 185 ft-lbs of torque, allowing it to hit 62 mph in 11. 3seconds and top out at 120 mph (190 km/h) on the German autobahn.

Finally, there’s the BlueMotion Passat, a mid-sized car that gets 53.5 mpg. It might not get up to speed very quickly, taking 12.5 seconds to 62 mph thanks to the same 105-hp engine as found in the Golf, but with a large 18.5 gallon (70 liter) tank it can travel 989 miles (1,591 km) at a time, which Volkswagen says equates to just seven fill-ups per year.

We’ll be sure to bring you more on VW’s new BlueMotion models from the Frankfurt Auto Show, starting September 15th.

Official release after the jump:

The World’s Most Fuel-Efficient Cars in their Classes:
BlueMotion premieres of the Polo, Golf and Passat at IAA 2009

Polo BlueMotion: 3.3 litres and 87 g/km CO2 are the new global benchmarks!

Golf BlueMotion: 3.8 litres and 99 g/km CO2 revolutionize the compact class!

Passat BlueMotion: 4.4 litres and 114 g/km CO2 unbeatable among big cars!

Wolfsburg, 02 September 2009 – What would be technically feasible if money were no object? What is the maximum fuel economy that a truly affordable car could attain? And how clean would its emissions be? Are there cars that can be purchased today that are already eco-friendly for the world of tomorrow? Is it possible for a car optimised for fuel efficiency to be just as uncompromisingly practical in everyday driving? These questions are becoming increasingly important to more and more people. On September 15, at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Volkswagen will be showing what is feasible when the best available yet affordable technologies of our times are sensibly combined – in the new generation of the Polo BlueMotion, Golf BlueMotion and Passat BlueMotion. All three Volkswagens are the world’s most fuel-efficient models in their respective size classes; all three are celebrating world premieres as production versions at the IAA; and all three can be ordered later this fall.
Polo with 3.3 litre fuel economy: The new Polo BlueMotion (55 kW / 75 PS) – with an average fuel consumption of just 3.3 litres diesel (equivalent to 87 g/km CO2!) per 100 kilometres – is advancing to become the “3-liter fuel economy car” of the modern era and the most fuel efficient five-seater in the world. Compared to a conventional Polo TDI with 75 PS, CO2 emissions were reduced 20 percent, and fuel consumption was reduced by 0.9 litre per 100 kilometres – thanks to BlueMotionTechnologies that include a new high-tech 1.2-liter TDI. They make the commute to work, vacation trip and long weekend affordable again. A person driving a Polo BlueMotion from Berlin to the IAA in Frankfurt, for example, can cover the 545 kilometre route for just 19 Euros* in fuel costs. Refueling becomes an afterthought, since the 45 litre tank of the Polo BlueMotion leverages a theoretical range of 1,363 kilometres. One more example related to costs: According to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics, the average German car driver drives a total of 11,000 kilometres per year. For Polo BlueMotion drivers this means that they can cruise the entire year on just eight fuel fill-ups and 377 Euros* in fuel costs. The Polo BlueMotion, which can move at 173 km/h if necessary, makes its market debut in 2010.

Golf with 3.8 litre fuel economy: Motoring at a cost level practically as pleasing as that of the Polo is the new Golf BlueMotion (77 kW / 105 PS). Thanks to its fuel consumption of just 3.8 litres diesel (99 g/km CO2), it is the world’s most fuel-efficient car in its class. Its theoretical range is 1,447 kilometres (55 litre tank). Average annual fuel costs: just 439 Euros or about 37 Euros* per month

The most fuel-efficient Golf of all times is powered by a new, quiet common rail turbo-diesel. Like all TDIs, this engine does not lack in power by any measure. Just the opposite is true: The 105 PS sixteen-valve, four-cylinder engine generates its maximum torque of 250 Newton-Meters at a low 2,000 rpm. Equipped with these key performance parameters, the engine accelerates the Golf BlueMotion to 100 km/h in just 11.3 seconds. Its top speed: 190 km/h. The new Golf BlueMotion will first arrive at European dealers in late fall of this year.

Passat with 4.4 litre fuel economy: The driving range of the new Passat BlueMotion may just be record-setting. With an average fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres diesel (114 g/km CO2) per 100 kilometres, it can cover 1,591 kilometres on one fill-up of its 70 litre tank! That adds up to just seven fill-ups per year. Cost point: 502 Euros*. There is no other car of this size on the road today that is more fuel-efficient. Advance orders start in early October, and the new Passat BlueMotion will be at dealers one month later – as a saloon and an estate car. The Passat shares its 77 kW / 105 PS common rail TDI with the Golf BlueMotion. A look at the Passat’s superior performance data reveals the tremendous potential of this engine and the aerodynamic properties of the Passat: 193 km/h top speed and 12.5 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.

TDI + Start-Stop + Regeneration: The BlueMotionTechnologies aboard the three super-economizers make up a comprehensive package of extremely diverse high-tech components and detailed solutions. Building the foundation for the extremely low fuel consumption and emission values of these cars are their new common rail TDI engines with modified engine management software and reduced idling speed. Power transfer is handled by five-speed gearboxes with longer gear ratios. A gear-shift indicator integrated in the instruments ensures that the BlueMotion models are always driven at the gear stage that is optimal for fuel economy.

Other BlueMotion features include energy recovery (regenerative braking), a Start-Stop system (automatic engine shutoff, such as at red lights), tyres optimized for low rolling resistance, especially lightweight low-drag wheels, improved fine tuning of body aerodynamics and a lower chassis (Polo and Golf). In addition, the new BlueMotion models are distinguished from other versions of their respective model lines by stylish modifications and a customized interior. For the first time, Volkswagen – and this represents a clear reversal of market trends – is giving its BlueMotion models dynamic styling features that bridge the gap between sustainability and sporty appeal. The Golf and Passat, for example, are making their appearance with bumpers and side skirts from the avant-garde R-Line; the Polo meanwhile is distinguished by such features as completely new radiator grille styling and special alloy wheels. The Polo and Passat Estate also have an independent rear tailgate spoiler.

Pricing is not left out of the equation by any means, and it is consistent with our declared goal of offering very advanced eco-friendly cars at affordable prices. And BlueMotion is certainly affordable.

We’ve known for some time now that Volkswagen is planning to build a new mid-size sedan, but as details of the German automaker’s future product lineup emerge, it appears as though VW isn’t just interest in taking on the Camry, but the entire Toyota lineup.

Volkswagen has the potential to overtake Toyota as the world’s largest automaker, but first it must crack the North American market. The new mid-sized sedan will be the first step in that direction, but after it will come a competitor for the Highlander.

Apparently Volkswagen is finally ready to abandon its European philosophy and sell Americans what they want – big cars. “U.S. customers look at size and engine displacement. They won’t pay an extra dollar for a Passat over a Camry just because of its finesse and attention to detail,” said a VW representative to the staff at Car & Driver.

So what we can expect from the upcoming sedan is essentially just a larger and less expensive version of the Passat, with what will most likely be a more progressive (CC-esque) design. The VW rep’s comments about engine displacement also draws into question previous reports that the upcoming sedan will be powered by VW’s 2.0 TFSI and 2.5-liter engines.

The release date for the upcoming Volkswagen family sedan has also been moved up to 2011, most likely to take advantage of the struggling U.S. automakers.

It, as well as the Highlander-competitor, will both be assembled in the Unites States at Volkswagen’s new Chattanooga, Tennessee facility.

The new bigger-is-better philosophy at Volkswagen will also spill over to the Polo. Apparently it will still hit our shores but not until 2012 and in a larger format than in Europe and as a sedan.

According to C&D, VW’s future vehicles for the U.S. include the BlueSport Roadster (which has been temporarily placed on hold) as well as a second generation of the hugely unsuccessful Phaeton.

In an exclusive interview with Automotive News, Volkswagen North America CEO Stefan Jacoby let slip precious few details about the secret new sedan that is slated for production. But he did admit its existence, even saying that the final design of the vehicle had been agreed upon in just the past few weeks in Wolfsburg.

Whether it will look anything like the sketches that leaked out in February (pictured above), has not been confirmed.

What else we do know is that the vehicle will use VW’s 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter engines and will cost a very-reasonable $20,000.

The vehicle is slated to be produced in VW NA’s new Chattanooga, Tennessee plant with sales beginning in the Spring of 2012.

As for what else will be built at the plant, there is the possibility of a VW version of the upcoming Audi Q3 – although that may no longer be likely after VW announced a “project” had been put on hold in the U.S. after it decided to award the SEAT facility in Spain the contract to build the Q3.

Most likely to be built at the new facility are the two new Polo models that Jacoby has already confirmed are coming. With the current Euro-spec Polo deemed too small for the U.S. market, VW plans to bring a sedan and hatchback version of the Polo, but not until 2011. And where better to build a North American spec vehicle than in North America.

Ulrich Hackenberg, the head of development at VW has announced that the German automaker will bring the sub-sub-compact Polo to the U.S. market.

In Europe the Polo slots in between the tiny Fox (formerly Lupo) and the VW Golf – the smallest model currently offered in North America. It would compete in an ever increasing category of small, fuel-efficient cars, which include the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Chevy Aveo and Suzuki Swift.

VW has set for itself a lofty sales goal of 800,00 vehicles annually in the United States and plans to achieve this within the next ten years. A new, more affordable model must certainly be a part of that growth plan as 800,000 units is almost triple what VW currently sells in the U.S

The move would also provide a way for VW to continue to push it’s diesel mandate in America with models like the Polo 1.9 TDI.

Volkswagen is expected to introduce the 2010 Polo at the Geneva Auto Show in March with the potential of a U.S.-Spec version debuting at the New York Auto Show in April.
