Sorry fans, but the possible successor to the Porsche 550 of the 1950′s is going to stay in the stable for quite a while longer.
CEO Matthias Mueller of Porsche is waiting for the next generation of consumers to see if the sales numbers justify the release of such a vehicle and wont make their move until they do. If you were one of the people waiting for the mid-engine drop top Mueller announced in February of last year for a 2014 release, then you probably want to take up a hobby to pass the time. There really isn’t any telling how long this will take.
On the other hand, if you’re just Porsche-bound and eager for something that isn’t already on the market, there is still the small Cajun SUV to look forward to in the 2013 model year and the 2013 Boxster (pictured above) to fulfill that convertible craving.

Porsche‘s hard at work on their new Cajun, a smaller sibling to its popular Cayenne SUV, based on Audi‘s Q5 platform. The Cajun mule was recently spotted out testing in Northern Sweden, revealing little about its design.
What it does reveal is that Porsche plans to have a wider body than the Q5, noted by the black fender flares spotted on the test mule. Porsche will also surely fine tune the chassis and outfit the Cajun with bigger brakes, wheels and tires. And while the powerplants will come from Audi, Porsche is undoubtedly play with them a tad in order to give it more power output than the Q5 counterparts, as well as be more in-line with what Porsche’s all about – performance.
We can probably expect a hybrid Cajun with Audi’s 2.0L TFSI powerplant with 210-hp combined with a 44-hp electric motor. As of now, the Cajun will be produced in 4-door form but rumor has it that we can expect a sportier coupe version down the line.

It’s becoming somewhat of a broken record among premium German automakers. Now Porsche is the latest to say that it plans to significantly increase sales in the US market by growing its product portfolio.
Last year, Porsche sold some 25,320 vehicles Stateside; by 2018, the firm’s North America CEO; Detlev Von Platen says the company will boost that to some 50,000 vehicles annually.
Porsche is already diversifying its product portfolio, in addition to the new 911 and Panamera GTS (shown) and Hybrid models, it’s got a diesel Cayenne headed to US dealers next year (which is expected to be a volume seller), along with the Cajun “baby” crossover. The company is also in the process of putting together a hiring program, which should add 60 more people to the payroll by 2015 to support the automaker’s growth plans.
For a luxury car manufacturer in America this represents quite a stark contrast to the economic doom and gloom that continues to dominate the headlines, yet Von Platen believes that Porsche NA will achieve it’s growth objectives.
“We expect strong growth in the U.S., which is an established, mature market,” he said. “I hate this doom and gloom attitude. I believe in the U.S.”

Porsche broke ground on an expansion of its Leipzig, Germany factory, that will produce its upcoming Cajun crossover, a smaller model expected to slot below the popular Cayenne SUV.
The $500 million investment will add 1,000 new jobs at the plant, which already produces the Panamera sedan and the Cayenne. The Cajun will ride on the same platform as the Audi Q5 and debut in 2013.
The Porsche Cajun baby SUV is coming and according to a new report a 2-door version will likely follow. Expected to arrive initially as a four-door, built on the same platform as the Audi Q5, Porsche may look to bring to market an even sportier coupe-styled model to compete with vehicles like the Range Rover Evoque.
According to Car & Driver the Cajun’s styling would certainly adapt well to a coupe version with its dimensions being shorter, wider and lower to the ground than the Q5.
Expected to be available exclusively with all-wheel drive, the Cajun will get several engine choices borrowed from Audi including the 2.0 TFSI rated at around 220-hp, to a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 300-hp. Look for an even higher-performance Cajun model eventually with a supercharged version of the 3.0-liter engine making as much as 350-hp. Both diesel and hybrid options are likely too.
We won’t know for sure until much closer to the baby Cayenne’s launch which is expected in 2013 as a 2014 model year vehicle.

In an effort to align both brands more closely under the VW umbrella, as well as save on engineering and R&D costs, Audi will supply Porsche with it’s spicy twin-turbo V6 diesel engine.
Designed for installation in Porsche’s new baby SUV, the Cajun, said diesel is a potent piece, churning out 309 hp and a staggering 479 lb-ft of torque in Euro trim.
On the Audi side, the new diesel engine will also be installed in the facelifted Q5, along with versions of the A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and Q7. There’s also been speculation that a version of this new diesel might also find its way into a range of new S models, though Audi’s head of engineering, Axel Eisner, would only confirm that it had been approved for ‘regular’ production models. He also hinted that Audi is also working on a four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel.
The move comes as a bit of a quid pro quo for Audi, since SEAT’s Exeo flagship is a re-badged Audi A4, and with SEAT’s flagging sales presenting an issue for Volkswagen’s overall profitability, the excess production capacity could be put to good use building a product that will surely be a hit. The move will also add between 700 and 1,200 jobs in a region that has been hit hard by the global recession.
The Q3 will share a platform with the upcoming Porsche Cajun, but the P-Car will be built at a separate facility in Leipzig, Germany.
Porsche has confirmed the Cajun compact crossover will head into production, hitting the market in 2013. The news comes as part of an announcement by the German automaker that it has selected its Leipzig plant to assemble the new vehicle alongside the Cayenne and Panamera.
Also of note, Porsche uses the ‘Cajun’ name in its official press release, suggesting that will be the official title given to what will no doubt be the most performance-oriented crossover in its segment.
Based on the same underpinnings as the Audi Q5, reports have suggested the car will be powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine making 300-hp.
The Porsche Cayenne was built to save the German sports car maker, selling in high volume and at high profits. Now a rumored smaller SUV, known as the Cajun, is likely to repeat it’s big brother’s successes.
Porsche has approved plans to bring this new model to market, based on the Audi Q5 platform and according to some reports it will be powered by a new twin-turbo V6 making somewhere around 350-hp. And thanks to the artistic expert of one forum member at TeamSpeed.com, we have a glimpse at how this new model may look.
Confirmation won’t come soon, however, with the baby Cayenne not set to debut for at least a few more years.

With Porsche sales having recovered on par with pre-recession levels in the United States, Porsche’s CEO Matthias Mueller said that the brand is looking at adding production facilities in the United States or China so that the brand can meet its target of 200,000 sales by 2018.
“We will consider this year whether to start production in Asia or North America,” Mueller said to German magazine Focus. Porsche’s German plants are judged to be to small to handle this sort of capacity. With the Boxster previous built at a factory in Finland, Mueller said that building Porsches in China or America would not betray the brand’s heritage.
Porsche is eyeing production of its ucoming Cajun SUV in China. The company will also open up a test track for customers near Shanghai’s Formula 1 track, and expand its Chinese dealer network from 35 stores to a total of 100 sometime in the future.
Porsche‘s supervisory board has given the go-ahead for a new “efficient and sporty model” to be dubbed “Cajun”.
Referencing the Cayenne (seen above), the official Porsche news release dubbed the Cajun as an “entry-level” model, similar to the Boxster in terms of positioning, and stressed that the vehicle will be light weight and agile. No further details were given, but we’re glad to see the industry’s worst-kept secret become official.

Rumors of a baby Cayenne have been around for several years now and have always been realistic, with the certainty that the new model could ride on the same platform that underpins the current Audi Q5. Rumored to be called the Cajun, we’re now hearing initial rumors of its powerplant.
According to a report by Motor Trend, while the Porsche Cajun will be much smaller than its big brother, it won’t be a performance slouch (what Porsche is?), sporting a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 under the hood. The V6 is actually a downsized version of the current 3.6-liter direct-injection unit found in the base Cayenne and Panamera. With smaller displacement, direct-injection, and turbocharging the new 3.0-liter should make a big step forward in reducing overall fuel consumption at Porsche – especially as the Cajun will no doubt be a volume seller for the brand.
This isn’t Porsche’s only move towards cutting fuel economy either, with the next-generation Boxer rumored to get a turbocharged 4-cylinder.
Power for the new engine should be rated at around 350-hp, when the Cajun launches in 2013, with the same engine then being used in the Panamera shortly after that.
Another important note, Porsche may offer the Cajun as both a 2-door and 4-door model in a bid to compete with the new Range Rover Evoque.
Porsche employees are now banned from going on Facebook for fear of corporate espionage. A Bloomberg report states that Porsche brass are worried that foreign intelligence services are intercepting messages sent via Facebook. Sites such as Ebay were also banned at company computers.
The Bloomberg report was sparse on information, but spying by foreign governments on private companies isn’t unheard of. Maybe some hostile government wants to see if the long rumored baby SUV really will be named the “Cajun”.
In a recent interview with Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn not only gave credibility to reports that Porsche is planning a new smaller SUV model; he even hinted at the name. Commenting that the new model would be used to increase Porsche’s sales numbers, Winterkorn used the name Cajun to describe the baby Cayenne.
Details about the upcoming volume model are scarce, but it’s certain to ride on a version of the Audi Q5 platform. Possible engine choices include a smaller version of the 3.6-liter V6 currently found in the base-model Cayenne and Panamera, while a more likely possibility is some sort of 4-cylinder (perhaps forced induction) powerplant that could also be used in an entry-level Boxster as well as Porsche’s planned smaller Boxster model.
Almost too obvious is the VW-brand 2.0T engine, but Porsche execs have commented in the past that they’d like to stay away from sharing VW/Audi engine technology in Porsches.
VW’s goal for the Porsche brand is to almost double overall sales, pushing total annual output to roughly 150,000 units using volume sales models.
