Americans will finally get a look at the U.S.-spec Porsche Cayenne diesel when it debuts at this year’s New York International Auto Show.
The oil-burner is expected to make either 240-hp like the European Cayenne Diesel, or 225-hp like the TDI Touareg and Q7. It’ll be backed with 406 lb-ft of torque and should get better fuel efficiency than the Cayenne S Hybrid’s 24-mpg highway. Unfortunately it’s also expected that the diesel-powered Cayenne will get under 20-mpg city.
Even though diesel models aren’t as popular in America as they are in Europe, other luxury automakers are testing the water with diesel variants of popular models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLK.
As gas prices consistently rise and consumers look more to efficiency as a critical factor, companies at all levels are realizing the importance of hybrid and diesel options, even in the U.S.

The 100,000th second generation Porsche Cayenne was assembled today in Porsche’s Leipzig, Germany plant and marks steady and clear growth for the German automaker.
The public and auto journalists alike had their doubts about the Cayenne when it was first brought to the North American market in 2003, but the luxury SUV has held its own and has had strong sales since the beginning. In 2011, the second generation Cayenne increased its sales by 15 percent over the 2010 model year selling 29,023 units in the United States.
Along with the 100,000th second generation Cayenne, Porsche is celebrating its 10th year of producing vehicles at the Leipzig site. “Ten years ago the success story of Porsche Leipzig started. What was a greenfield site, today ranks among the most modern car plants in the world. In addition to the Cayenne, Leipzig is also where Porsche produces the very successful Panamera luxury saloon, approximately 70,000 units of which have now rolled off the production line. That is why more than 93,800 vehicles left the Porsche plant in Leipzig in 2011, more than in any year before”, says Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board of Production and Logistics of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.
Mirroring the American numbers, China has also recorded a sharp increase in the purchasing of the luxury SUV. From 2009 to 2010, Cayenne sales increased 14 percent in China and Porsche forecasts that by 2014 China will be its largest market.
The Leipzig plant will be adding a third shift to keep up with demand on the Cayenne, and will no doubt be kept busy by a re-surging auto market worldwide.
The CUV will sell under the 2013 model year, probably with a 2.1-liter diesel engine making 204 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The engine, which is already approved under U.S. emissions standards, is almost a third smaller than what the company offers in the rest of its diesel lineup: the E, S, M, R and GL Class models. The news about Mercedes’ latest diesel decision was confirmed to Automotive News at the recent Detroit Auto Show. The new GLK will come with a host of new features and smoother lines than the previous model (pictured above).
Diesel engines are proving to be a popular choice for German auto manufacturers. Volkswagen has long been known for offering a diesel variant on many of their cars. Porsche, which they own, will also be sending a diesel Cayenne stateside. BMW also already sells a diesel 3-Series and X5.
Thanks to higher compression ratios, cars burning diesel can offer significantly better mileage, and have especially noticeable torque. That means they pull hard from a stop sign or traffic light. The downside is that they have a relatively low top speed and comparatively weak horsepower, though neither of those things are particularly relevant to most daily drivers. The only other problem is that diesel is more expensive than gasoline, lightly offsetting the cost-to-benefit ratio.
Nonetheless, Mercedes is proving that they have faith in the technology and so far that faith seems well founded. They are expecting sales figures for the GLK to reach the “high 30′s” compared to last year’s 24,310 units, according to Mercedes’ U.S. chief Steve Cannon.

Rather, Porsche will confirm that later this year it will begin sales of a diesel version of its top seller, the Cayenne SUV. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the luxury SUV (which is already on sale in other markets) is powered by a 3.0-liter V6, making 245 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, and is capable of a 0-60 time of 7.6 seconds.
Last year Porsche Cayenne sales in the U.S. accounted for 55.6 percent of total sales.

It’s becoming somewhat of a broken record among premium German automakers. Now Porsche is the latest to say that it plans to significantly increase sales in the US market by growing its product portfolio.
Last year, Porsche sold some 25,320 vehicles Stateside; by 2018, the firm’s North America CEO; Detlev Von Platen says the company will boost that to some 50,000 vehicles annually.
Porsche is already diversifying its product portfolio, in addition to the new 911 and Panamera GTS (shown) and Hybrid models, it’s got a diesel Cayenne headed to US dealers next year (which is expected to be a volume seller), along with the Cajun “baby” crossover. The company is also in the process of putting together a hiring program, which should add 60 more people to the payroll by 2015 to support the automaker’s growth plans.
For a luxury car manufacturer in America this represents quite a stark contrast to the economic doom and gloom that continues to dominate the headlines, yet Von Platen believes that Porsche NA will achieve it’s growth objectives.
“We expect strong growth in the U.S., which is an established, mature market,” he said. “I hate this doom and gloom attitude. I believe in the U.S.”

TechArt has revealed their tuning kit for the new-generation Porsche Cayenne Diesel, increasing horsepower output from 240-hp to 280-hp. The power increase comes courtesy from their Techtronic power kit line, (part number TA 058/D1) which is essentially an intelligent engine management system that puts power boost at the push of a button. In addition to the Techtronic power kit, TechArt offers a sport exhuast system for the Cayenne Diesel.
Torque is increased from 405 lb-ft to to 457 lb-ft helping give the Cayenne Diesel’s 0-62 mph time to 7.2 seconds and a new top speed of 145-mph. As with all Techtronic units, this TechArt tuning program is backed by a warranty on engine and transmission.
No pricing was announced for the tuning package.

Porsche continues to debate whether it will sell diesel models in the U.S. According to recent reports, if the go-ahead is given, diesel models would not only include the Cayenne SUV, but also the new Panamera sedan.
An announcement could come as early as this March, when Porsche will debut the Panamera Hybrid and Diesel at the Geneva Auto Show.
Stating that the German sports car maker is preparing to make a final decision soon, Porsche marketing boss Bernhard Maier stated that, “We are discussing internally if we should introduce the Cayenne diesel in the U.S. this year. Also a Panamera diesel is an option.”
Currently Porsche offers the Cayenne Diesel in Europe with a 3.0-liter V6 with 240-hp and a 0-62 mph time of 7.8 seconds thanks to an 8-speed auto-box. The Panamera Diesel would be offered with a similar powerplant. The Cayenne S Hybrid is sold in Europe, North America and other markets. It is powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a 47-hp electric motor, making 380-hp and 427 lb-ft of torque
According to Maier, Cayenne diesel and hybrid models make up 30 percent of Cayenne sales globally and Porsche expects that number to grow in 2011.

Porsche is reportedly considering bringing a diesel version of the second-generation Cayenne to North America. News comes from Porsche Canada PR manager Laurance Yap, who even admitted that Porsche Canada is pushing Germany to at least bring the Cayenne Diesel there.
Diesels have long had a stronger following north of the border with Volkswagen seeing considerable sales success in the area. Diesel luxury SUVs are also popular with Mercedes-Benz Canada reporting that over 70 percent of all its SUVs sold are equipped with diesel engines.
The move would also make sense as both BMW and Audi also offer diesel options of the X5 and Q7.
In Europe the Cayenne Diesel comes with a 3.0-liter V6 with 240-hp, an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 0-62 mph time of 7.8 seconds.
Along with the eagerly anticipated GT3, Porsche will debut the new Cayenne Diesel at the Geneva Auto Show in March.
Powered by a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, the Cayenne Diesel makes 240hp and a significant 405 ft-lbs of torque at just 2000 rpm. Porsche says the engine can propel the Cayenne Diesel to 62 mph in a reasonable 8.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 133 mph.
The Cayenne Diesel will come standard with Porsche’s Tiptronic S transmission – sorry, no PDK here.
Fuel consumption is rated at 30.4 mpg on average, for a total fuel-tank range of 620 miles.
With all that powerful diesel-generated torque we expect the towing abilities to be significant, however, Porsche has yet to release that statistic.
Outside the Cayenne Diesel looks the same as a standard Cayenne, including the rear Cayenne badge. (It appears as though any reference to the diesel engine will be absent).
Other features of the Cayenne Diesel include Porsche Traction Management (PTM) to ideally distribute power between the front and rear wheels. Finally, Porsche’s Stability Management (PSM) system has received tweaks to work more fluidly with the diesel powerplant.
The Cayenne Diesel is currently not scheduled for sale in North America.
