Kate Middleton’s 2001 Volkswagen Golf with 62,000 miles on it, sold for a whopping $74,500 as the Sunday bidding closed on the eBay auction site.
Five bidders fought over the Golf for the last 10 days, and ten minutes before the end of the auction, one person shelled out 48,100 pounds ( $78,383 USD) for the used vehicle. The book value of the 10-year-old Golf is about $5,700 and a brand new Golf sells for $24,000.
Kate Middleton bought the Golf in 2001 while attending the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and she owned it until 2007 Kate passed the car onto her brother James, who later sold it to 21 year old Sonny Brazil.
“I do believe this will be the best piece of royal history anyone could have,” said Sonny Brazil. Brazil originally said he would include a pair of silver cufflinks found in the car, but has since changed his mind and decided to return them to the Middleton family.

You couldn’t ask for a better time to sell Kate Middleton’s car than right now, just after her royal wedding. The current owner of the indigo blue, three-door 2001 Volkswagen Golf, Sonny Brazil, who lives close to the Middleton’s home in Berkshire, England is auctioning off the car via Ebay. Brazil, 21, bought the car for $2,300 (£1,400) in 2009 after Kate, 29, gave the Golf to her brother James.
The car currently has 62,000 miles on the odometer of which Middleton put on 60,000. Kate had the mirror replaced in 2003 and one of the front headlights fixed in 2006. According to an auction house in Dorset, England, the VW is valued at an estimated $48,000, with the starting bid set at $32,000. Along with the car, Brazil will include a pair of sterling silver cufflinks he found inside the car. ”They might have been William’s or they could have belonged to James,” he says. ”It’s amazing to think I only paid about £1,400 for the car,” Brazil said. “And now it’s worth far more than that.”
As a bachelor, Prince William was noted for his Audi S4 sedan, equipped with a 4.2L V8 and a stealthy grey paint job. But now that William is a married man, it might be time for something a bit tamer, and the Royal Family’s relationship with Audi means that the future King of England has his pick of the Audi lineup.
William seems to have opted for a sleek A5 Sportback, finished in the same grey as his S4. While the A5 may be more stylish than the car it replaces (especially with the S-Line appearance kit), it likely lacks the performance chops to keep pace with William’s S4.

Prince William chose an environmentally friendly way to show off his new bride by leaving Buckingham Palace in his father’s vintage Aston Martin DB6 MK II.
While Prince Charles is a noted gearhead, he’s also extremely passionate about environmental causes, and has had the Aston retrofitted to run on E85 made from “wine wastage”. Prince Charles has owned the car since 1969, but is also known to drive an Audi A8 and an Audi Allroad station wagon.
