Debuting for the first time at the Geneva Auto Show, the Land Rover Range_e Range Rover is a plug-in hybrid concept based on the popular luxury SUV. Making use of both a hybrid powertrain and a 3.0-liter diesel V6, Land Rover Global Brand Director John Edwards has confirmed the Range_e will see production in the next two years.
Enabling a pure electric drive of up to 20 miles Edwards said the test mules have reached as much as 3.3 l/100 km – equivalent to 85-mpg – in testing. That number will be lower in U.S. gallons, and lower still on the more stringent U.S. EPA standards. Still, even anything close to 50-mpg would be more than double the current gasoline models.
