group shot for website 2 (2)

Yesterday we took eight fun-to-drive performance vehicles under $30,000 and put them through their paces on the street.

After much deliberation, we chose the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST as the king of the street. Despite a somewhat harsh ride, nothing else matches the raw, hilariously fun driving experience behind the wheel.

AutoGuide-Under-30000-performance-car-shootout

Sporty cars are not dead. Rumors of their demise are premature. Thrill-packed machinery litters the automotive landscape, available to suit nearly every budget.

When it comes to motoring fun, one of the most intriguing segments is the under $30,000 price bracket, where several enticing choices can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ford is hard at work putting the finishing touches on its hotly anticipated 2015 Mustang, which is expected to go on sale this fall. Regrettably we haven’t been offered any time in the driver’s seat but we did get the next best thing: a chance to ride shotgun for a few hot laps.

Sportiness is no Ghostly Apparition with the Wraith

2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith

Rolls-Royce is one of the most famous automakers in the world. This storied British brand is best known for building obscenely lavish cars, motoring vehicles that scream “expensive,” but in a well-mannered, genteel way.

2014-Rolls-Royce-Wraith-05.jpgModels like the Ghost sedan and Phantom flagship practically define the luxury segment. They’re decked out with features and materials not found in lesser vehicles, even from premium brands. But traditionally Rollers are all about comfort; “waftability” is something engineered right into these models from day one. They’re designed to transport passengers in total comfort and serenity.

In the past if you wanted a sporty luxury car you’d have to shop somewhere else. The folks at Mercedes-Benz would happily sell you an AMG-amplified model, or BMW would gladly entice you with their M cars. But sporty and Rolls-Royce were mutually exclusive, until now.

Ask AutoGuide No. 41

Ask AutoGuide is our community outreach program. Drivers in need of car-buying assistance call on us and we respond with a helping hand, a kind word or a stern warning; if they’re lost we can provide a map and some direction. Usually we recommend sensible sedans, handy hatchbacks or miserly mini-models, but this week we get to have a little fun.

BMW’s 3 Series Coupe is fading away. It’s soon to be replaced by the all-new 2014 4 Series, a car that’s powered by either a four- or six-cylinder turbo. But what about drivers that want even more performance than what’s provided by these base engines? There’s no need to call Scooby Doo and company because the Concept M4 Coupe is a pretty obvious clue as to what’s in the works.

Ask-AutoGuide-No-19-Main-Art

Our regular Ask AutoGuide feature is all about helping distressed shoppers find the perfect vehicle, be it a cavernous crossover, a sensible sedan or something else entirely. Patrons send us a list of what they need and we get to work separating gold nuggets from gravel to generate a list of recommendations. But this week things are a little different. James forwarded us a message asking for guidance choosing between two different vehicles. Making things easy for us he’s done all the hard work, now all we have to do is share our opinion.

Retro Ride: 1993 Mazda RX-7 Review

Is this car still legendary, or just past its prime?

 |  Jun 18 2013, 1:22 PM

1993-Mazda-RX-7-09.png

The 1990s was a great time for Japanese sports cars. Pretty much every manufacturer was building a world class performance machine including Mazda, with the third generation RX-7. But that was twenty years ago and what may have been great then, might not be any good today. So, we have gotten our hands on a pristine, low mileage 1993 Mazda RX-7 to see if it was all hype, or the real deal.

The 1990s is a decade known for things like flannel shirts, grunge music, Barney the purple dinosaur and Napster. But for those who live and breathe high octane fuel, the ‘90s was also a great time for performance vehicles. With the world economy in fine shape, manufacturers everywhere were producing some impressive machinery. This is the decade that gave birth to the Dodge Viper, McLaren F1 and Lamborghini Diablo.

Ah to be young again. AutoGuide’s nationally recognized, board-certified Oracles remember their youth vividly… it was terrible. People often say age is just a number and you’re only as old as you feel, unfortunately they were born wearing elastic-waist jeans and Science Olympiad fanny packs. Gingivitis arrived when they were in middle school.
