2013 Scion FR-S Review AI3U0262

In what is an obvious shot at its closest rival, Scion has announced pricing for it’s new rear-drive sports car, starting at $50 less than the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

The spiritual successor to the Toyota AE86, the rear-wheel drive Scion FR-S will start at just $24,200 for the six-speed manual transmission model. Those who prefer not to shift gears themselves can opt for the six-speed automatic for $1,100 more, or a total of $25,300.

Standard on all FR-S models will be a 200 hp 2.0-liter direct-injection 4-cylinder with a limited slip differential. With an ultra-low center of gravity, the FR-S also delivers a 53/47 weight balance.

Other standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels with 215/45/17 tires, a dual-exhaust system, LED taillights, a tilt and telescopic leather steering wheel, FR-S branded floor mats, a 300-watt eight-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB Pioneer audio system and Bluetooth. Seven colors will be available: Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Argento, Ultramarine, Firestorm and Whiteout.

Available at dealers this June, the FR-S pricing excludes an additional $730 destination fee.

When it hits Scion dealers in June, the 2013 FR-S will be priced from $24,200 according to a leaked dealer document. That puts it just $50 under the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Included in that price will be the 200 hp 2.0-liter direct-injection boxer 4-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Those wishing for the surprisingly good six-speed automatic will have to add $1,100 more for a total of $25,300.

The FR-S will be available in seven colors: Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Argento, Ultramarine, Firestorm and Whiteout.

It’s still unofficial, but a source inside Scion’s Canada division has let slip to AutoGuide that when the FR-S goes on sale later this year it will start at $27,500.

Initially commenting that the price would be somewhere between the $27,000 and $30,000 mark the insider, who wishes to remain anonymous, eventually gave the the $27,500 figure for the monospec model. By comparison, the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe starts at $26,499 in Canada, a difference of $1,001.

It’s not possible to simply convert the figures to U.S. dollars, but this info does give a strong hint at American pricing, focusing more on the difference between the two than the actual numbers. With the Genesis Coupe priced at $24,250 here, look for at least a $1,000 increase, putting the MSRP at just over the $25,000 mark.
