As the official F1 safety car, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT has been seeing quite a bit of track time in this year’s FIA Formula One World Championship. With a good chance that it’ll make an appearance at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, the German automaker has outfitted it with several changes.

To date, the F1 safety car has already been sent out onto the track six times this season with over 85 miles driven under safety car conditions. Since 2008, the safety car has been deployed in every Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix race, so there’s a good chance it’ll be in action again this weekend.

With that in mind, the AMG team has increased its power to 591-hp, optimized its shifting times, and outfitted it with the new AMG Ride Control performance suspension. It’s undoubtedly the best safety car driver Bernd Mayländer could ask to get behind the wheel of.

The SLS AMG was first introduced as the official safety car for F1 back in 2010, before it was replaced by the new AMG GT model at the Hockenheim Grand Prix earlier this year. Since then, AMG has fine tuned its safety car to excel even more when it has to take the track.

“The new SLS AMG GT is the best Safety Car I have driven. The combination of increased performance, optimised transmission shift times and the new AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension takes the driving dynamics of the gullwing model to an even higher level. I have now been driving the different Safety Cars since 2000, and with each new vehicle I notice a significant enhancement over the previous model. This is where the pursuit of high performance and precision, which is so typical of Mercedes-AMG, is clearly evident again,” Mayländer recently said.

F1 driver David Coulthard has become quite the spokesperson for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG model, recently catching a 178-mph golf ball in an SLS AMG Roadster model. Now Coulthard has taken the new SLS AMG GT out onto the Nürburgring GP track to see how it performs.

The German automaker’s flagship model was updated with a new GT variant featuring 583 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque out of its 6.3-liter V8 powerplant. Changes to the suspension and the increased performance allows the SLS AMG GT to deliver faster lap times, and that’s what Coulthard was out to prove.

Coulthard provides some very interesting and insightful commentary on the SLS AMG GT throughout the video, but unfortunately it takes second place to just how awesome the SLS AMG GT sounds.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT was revealed earlier this month, updating the flagship Mercedes supercar thanks to knowledge gained from campaigning its GT3 race car.

20 extra horsepower was added to the SLS AMG GT, bringing its total to 583-hp along with new suspension components and a retuned ECU. As a result, the 6.2-liter V8 now has a more natural exhaust note, while the throttle response has been tweaked thanks to throttle calibration changes. On the interior, Mercedes offers new leather options to its buyers.

So what does that all result in? Well, besides a street car with race-inspired components, the SLS AMG GT walks the walk by taking on the famed Nordschleife just barely under 7:30. That’s around five seconds quicker than its predecessor model, which demonstrates just how much improved the mid-cycle refreshed SLS AMG is.

The SLS AMG GT will start hitting dealerships in November, and the MSRP is expected to rise around $5,000 for each model. That means the coupe will run around $195,000 while the Roadster variant will be close to $200,000.
