10 German Cars Not Made In Germany

Cultural stereotypes aside, Germany is known for its advanced technology, engineering prowess and top-quality manufacturing. The land of beer, bratwurst and BMW is especially famed for its automobiles, which are renowned the world over for their driving dynamics and Autobahn-proven performance.

But many of the cars and crossover manufactured by Teutonic firms aren’t actually built in the Fatherland. German companies have factories all around the world, from emerging markets like China and India to Eastern Europe, South Africa and even the good old U.S. of A.

Here’s a list of German vehicles that aren’t necessarily built in Germany.

Like memories of band camp August is dead and buried. Regrettably the eighth month of the year didn’t go quietly; it took summer down with it. Sure, the season’s not officially over but we’re too emotionally devastated about the loss to care. At least new-vehicle sales in the U.S. were strong.

Overall deliveries for the month topped 1.3 million units, a healthy 5 percent increase compared to August 2013. All told dealers delivered about 9.3 million cars and trucks for the first eight months of the year, which is also a 5 percent uptick compared to 2013. There’s nothing to complain about with these figures. But how did individual brands fare? Which ones performed the best and which ones are knocking on death’s door? Let’s explore …

Smart just debuted its new fortwo and forfour city cars at an event in Berlin marking the return of a four-seat car to the brand.

Daimler developed the new generation of cars in conjunction with Renault, retaining the rear-engine setup from previous fortwo models. The forfour and fortwo are based on the same platform, of course with a bigger chassis for the four-passenger version. The new fortwo will begin arriving in U.S. dealerships sometime next year for the 2016 model year. A Mercedes representative said the company hasn’t made a decisions yet about launching the new forfour in this market.

2016 smart fortwo (21).jpgBoth cars wear updated sheet metal with a curvier look pulled from the concept cars smart trotted out at auto shows over the last several years. Important as the updated styling will be in improving the fortwo’s image beside more stylish city cars, extensive mechanical changes the company revealed today will probably play a bigger role in determining how the new fortwo and forfour are received.

Rather than using the automated single-clutch gearbox that the current fortwo uses, smart is implementing a dual-clutch transmission along with a five-speed manual. The powertrain is available with one of two engines: a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated three-cylinder that makes 71 hp 67 lb-ft of torque or a smaller 0.9-liter turbo three-cylinder with 90 hp and roughly 100 lb-ft of torque. After the initial product launch the company will also offer a less powerful 60 hp engine as well, though the company hasn’t said which of those powertrains will be sold here.

The standard equipment list announced today includes LED daytime running lights, cruise control with a variable speed limiter, an exterior temperature thermometer and a monochrome LCD display in the instrument cluster among others.2016 smart fortwo (11).jpg

Smart is also offering touch screen navigation and smartphone integration along with an optional JBL sound system designed specifically for the car that includes a removable subwoofer to save cabin space when necessary.

Aside from adding content, the new car also comes with features meant to make it safer. For example, they all come with a crosswind counteracting feature meant to keep the car from swerving after hitting a strong surprise gust while driving at 50 MPH and above. There is also optional forward collision warning as well as a lane-keeping feature that prevents the car from drifting into another lane. Smart also performed crash tests with larger vehicles; specifically the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and S-Class. Smart said the crash tests far exceeded European requirements although that says nothing about how the car will perform once the IIHS smashes a few of them during its grueling battery of tests.

The next Smart ForTwo and ForFour are scheduled to be revealed later today, but images of the cars meant to showcase their JBL speaker systems are revealing them early.

smart-forfour-leakThe speaker company created a bespoke sound system specifically to fit into the small cabin spaces, but the promotional photos showing the speaker layout also reveal what the car looks like. Designed to save space, the system includes a removable subwoofer and speakers designed to surround the cabin occupants.  Smart’s official debut is supposed to take place today in Berlin when more information will be released.

Smart will re-enter the four-seat vehicle market after having discontinued the previous ForFour in 2006. That car was based on the Mitsubishi Colt, but the upcoming ForFour was developed in conjunction with the Renault Twingo.

Smart has released a new video that showcases the major differences in the next-generation of ForTwo and ForFour.

Over the last few years, Smart has released quite a few concept cars foreshadowing exactly what we will see when the new car is unveiled, likely at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, and this new video offers more clues.

First off, Smart’s new lineup of cars is growing in both length and width, and will now incorporate a two-box design similar to what most sedans use. The Tridion safety cell is also getting larger, with a more pronounced bulge in the back. Hexagons are also an important part of the new car’s design, used throughout the interior and exterior.

The new Smart car shares its platform with the Renault Twingo, and both the ForTwo and ForFour are expected to use a three-cylinder engine which uses direct injection to make 105 hp.

After one of the worst winters in recent memory America’s northern extremities are finally starting to thaw out. In addition to longer days, spring is also bringing warmer temperatures as the sun wakes up from hibernation. But were April car sales as nice? Did better weather get more people in the mood… to buy a car, that is?

All told automakers sold nearly 1.4 million new vehicles in April, an increase of about 8 percent compared to the same month last year. The change was modest but headed in the right direction, and that’s what matters.

For the first four months of 2014 deliveries have topped 5.1 million units. That’s approximately a 3 percent increase compared to the same time period last year. Again that’s small but really there’s nothing to complain about. Here’s a list of top-performing brands along with the companies that didn’t do as well.

The Daimler brand is giving a good look at its upcoming products by releasing a handful of official photos showing the masked vehicles. Last month, AutoGuide.com’s spy photographers spotted a 2015 Fortwo test mule driving in the snow. The company has apparently since moved to testing what look like cars with a production version of the body.

The svelte covering is giving away fresh details about the next generation’s design including headlights that look like they are being influenced by some of the brand’s recent concpet cars.

Smart is likely to continue ignoring the U.S. market with the Forfour while the 2015 Fortwo will arrive sometime next year after going on sale globally sometime in 2014.

The Smart ForFour will likely not be coming to North American markets, a model that was developed without the U.S. in mind from the get go.

When Smart first began developing the ForFour, the automaker decided not to initially homologate the model for the American market. According to Smart CEO Annette Winkler, “what is needed here costs extra money,” money that might not be justifiable given Smart’s modest sales in North America. Last year, the ForTwo only sold 9,264 units, a seven-percent drop compared to 2012.

Regardless, it’s still an interesting decision considering that Smart’s competitors are releasing new four-seater models for the North American market. Fiat, for example, recently launched its 500L while MINI has expanded its model lineup with larger offerings such as the Countryman.

Spotted just after the Frankfurt Motor Show, our spy photographers grabbed some shots of this test mule for Smart’s upcoming redesigned ForTwo.

If it looks a little big, that’s because it is. What you’re looking at is a test mule, made from the Smart ForFour, which is actually hiding new ForTwo goodies beneath its sheet metal and plastic cladding.

The upcoming Smart ForTwo will in fact use a shortened version of the ForFour platform, which will also be used by the new Renault Twingo. Look closely and you’ll spot the Renault-looking rear end, despite the smart front bumper. All three cars are expected to have a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The vehicles are also expected to use a Renault-sourced three cylinder engine which uses direct injection to make 105-hp.

The folks at Daimler’s smart division revealed a new concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Supposedly their forjoy design study is a forerunner to a next-generation car.

This vehicle was built for folks living in urban areas, but that should be no surprise given the current smart car’s easy park-ability and shopping cart-like dimensions.

The fourjoy’s overall length clocks in at about 138 inches, which is around 11 and a half feet. It’s also roughly 78 inches wide and around five feet tall. The car’s turning circle is less than 30 feet, aiding agility.

Like countless vehicles on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show the fourjoy is electric. It’s powered by a 55 kW magneto-electric motor and 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery.

SEE ALSO: AutoGuide’s 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show Coverage

According to smart that pack takes about seven hours to fully charge using a household outlet. If the driver uses higher-voltage charging stations that time can be cut down to just one hour.

The car’s got some good stuff but it’s also what’s not there mattes. The fourjoy has no roof, it lacks a rear window and doesn’t even have any doors. These omissions help reduce mass and give it an open, airy feel.

The car’s interior was supposedly inspired by modern lounge furniture and it looks the part. The smart fourjoy can seat up to four passengers.

The 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show is just days away and more automakers are teasing what they’re going to be revealing at the event. Getting in on the action, smart released photos of and information about an electric concept they’ll be unveiling in Germany next week.

The fourjoy is a compact design study that’s all electric. It’s powered by a 55 kW motor that supposedly makes it “agile and lively to drive.” A 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides the juice and can be fully charged in about seven hours from a standard household socket, though it’s unclear whether this is on European or American electrical standards. In the old world they generally they run twice the voltage that we do in ‘Murica.

The battery can be fully replenished from high-powered municipal chargers in just one hour.

Like a transport ship dumping zebra muscle-tainted water in the Great Lakes smart’s fourjoy “dispenses with unnecessary ballast.” The car has an open roof, no doors, no rear window and probably no chance of making it into production. But still the open-air design is pretty neat.

SEE ALSO: AutoGuide’s 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show Coverage

Inside the car has lounge-like seating and a flowing, almost organic looking dashboard and center console.

Like the current production smart car this one features short overhangs, integrated tail lamps and wheels pushed out to the corners. But there is a major way in which it differs. The brand’s signature “Tridion” safety cell is crafted of aluminum. It’s been polished to a blinding luster and made an integral part of the vehicle’s design. A pair of electrically-driven skateboards mount to the roof.

It seems unlikely the smart fourjoy will ever find its way to dealerships, but this city-sized concept car is probably a strong hint as to what the next-generation smart will look like.

Once the buzz of the auto industry, the Smart car is now as stale as the week old donuts the finance team left uneaten in the boardroom.

Long overdue, Smart will look to revive its sales next year with two all-new models, which will be previewed at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The first will be a concept for the volume Fortwo model, while the second will be a four-seater hatchback appropriately named the Forfour. Both will share the same basic structure and use a new direct-injection 900cc 3-cylinder engine co-developed with Renault with maximum output set at around 105 hp for turbocharged versions.

Smart-forstars-concept-11

A six-speed manual is planned, though unlikely for North America. Instead, US Smarts will make use of a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic which replaces the much-criticized single-clutch version in the current car.

An electric powertrain will also be offered.

According to a new report the ForFour will be roughly three-feet longer than the current Smart fortwo, showing just how flexible the newly developed structure is.
