There are automakers and then there are automakers. There are the Chevrolets and Toyotas of the world that offer huge model ranges and sell thousands upon thousands of vehicles each year and then there are specialty boutique brands.
10. Porsche 918 Spyder: $845,000
The list of the Top 10 most expensive new cars is even more shocking that you might expect. Released by Forbes, you can forget the Ferrari 458 or the $300,000 Lamborghini Aventador because even at the low end of the scale these models start at right around the one million mark.
In 10th place, at $845,000 is Porsche’s upcoming flagship, the 918 Spyder. When it does arrive later this year, it will come powered by a high-revving V8 engine making more than 500 hp, mated to a plug-in hybrid system that adds over 218 hp. Porsche claims a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds, with an incredible 78 mpg rating.
If you own a small volume, exotic car company that is working hard to build its pedigree and customer base, there is perhaps no better place than Dubai to launch your new product.
While in recent years, this popular tourist spot of the United Arab Emirates might have gone through its own fair share of financial problems, there are still plenty of rich residents who can indulge themselves with the latest and fastest cars money can buy.
So it should come as no surprise that SSC (Shelby Super Cars) has decided to launch their new car, the Tuatara, at the Dubai Motor Show.
The Tuatara, which is named after a very fast lizard, has been shown to the public before, but that show car was just a body on a rolling chassis. The car SSC is showing in Dubai is the real deal, and thus gives us the first glimpse of its actual interior.
Thankfully the interior keeps the theme of its outrageous exterior. There are plenty of heads-up display screens to keep both the driver and passenger well informed about their progress, while the design looks something out of Star Wars.
You also now get a starter button that initiates a countdown of red lights before firing up that massive 6.8-liter, twin-turbo V8, which produces a barely believable 1350-hp.
SSC claims that the Tuatara is capable of hitting 275-mph, a claim they will have to verify at some point. To prove their car is not just a straight line missile, SSC will also take this car to the Nurburgring to see how it stacks up against other supercars from around the world. Amid all the historic autos on display at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Concept Lawn is a look at modern works of vehicular art – not all of them concepts either.
Vehicles on display at this year’s event included the the Infiniti Etheria concept, the SSC Tuatara concept and the Lotus Evora GTE Road Car Concept. The SSC car represents the next generation of the Ultimate Aero and will look to take back the title of the world’s fastest production car from Bugatti. As for the Lotus, it’s essentially a look at a possible street-legal track machine, merging the Evora road car and the GTE Le Mans race car together. Yet another concept was the Lexus LF-Gh – a design study that lead to the Pebble Beach reveal of the new 2013 Lexus GS350.
Looking very much like it belongs there, the Shelby Supercars (SSC) Tuatara has been shown for the first time in North America on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
With SSC’s previous model, the Ultimate Aero TT, having been highly criticized for its kit-car looks, the American supercar maker hired the talents of Jason Castriota (formerly of Pininfarina) to design what SSC claims will be the world’s fastest car. Powered by a 7.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the car will reportedly make as much as 1,350-hp. With a curb weight of 2,654 lbs it should hit 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 275 mph.
SSC’s previous supercar hit a top speed of 257-mph, taking the title of the world’s fastest production car from the Bugatti Veyron. Bugatti has since reclaimed the title, however, with a 267-mph run.

So much teasing has been going on with Shelby Supercars’ Ultimate Aero II, and now we’re getting the clearest shots of the vehicle from various angles. Along with the photos released by Top Gear, we get some more specs on the upcoming Ultimate Aero II supercar.
The vehicle will sport a 6.8-liter V8 twin-turbocharged powerplant, throwing down 1,350-hp with a top speed of 275 mph. All the exhilarating power can be felt all the way to 9,000 rpm. Its price? Just a touch under $1,000,000, with SSC listing the MSRP as $970,000.
And in its battle to take back the production car speed record – which now belongs to Bugatti’s Veyron Supersport – the Ultimate Aero II weighs in at a scant 2,600 lbs. This is mostly due to its excessive use of carbon fiber throughout the body and even the world’s first one-piece carbon fiber wheels (they weigh in at just under 13 lbs a piece). The result? A power-to-weight ratio that is almost double that of the Bugatti Veyron.
Now we just anxiously await to see this supercar launch from 0 mph to 275 mph before our blistering eyes… via YouTube of course.

GALLERY: SSC Ultimate Aero II
Earlier this week, we were all giddy with the idea that Shelby Supercars is producing the Ultimate Aero II in order to claim back its fastest production car world record. Now they’ve given Top Gear (of course) a first look at the entire vehicle from bumper to bumper, and teased the world with a fine shot of the Ultimate Aero II’s rear end.
And what a fine and futuristic-looking rear end it is. Clearly the styling designed by Jason Castriota (currently designing for Saab) is cutting edge and its menacingly low stance screams supercar. We’re definitely bigger fans of the front than the rear, but we also can understand the direction they’re going with the vehicle. Our only major complaint is the funky taillight design that vaguely reminds us of a Dodge Challenger. Oh, and we keep thinking that a blinking LED will just strip across the center ala KITT.
We just can’t wait to see this thing in action, and we’re going to have to (gulp) get ourselves a copy of that Top Gear!
If there was ever a scenario to prove that competition brings out the best in people, this is it. Shelby Supercars’ (SSC) has teased the world with its Ultimate Aero II, the successor to the Ultimate Aero TT. You see, the Ultimate Aero TT used to be the fastest production car in the world holding a 256 mph record. That is until Bugatti took their Veyron Super Sport and hit an astonishing 267.81 mph record.
And instead of SSC fine-tuning and tweaking their Ultimate Aero TT to take back the record, they decided to just build something bigger, better, badder and faster – hoping to leave Bugatti in the dust for quite a while. The car doesn’t officially launch for another few days, but it was unveiled to a select few out in Monterey. They captured the unveiling on video, but never actually display the vehicle, just the over-the-top reactions from its attendees.
But now there’s at least a video that reveals its edgy design (a massive improvement over the current kit-car styled SSC) that only has one thing on its mind: to take back the production car speed record. And even though the general public doesn’t really reap the rewards of this competition between Bugatti and SSC – since we don’t quite have a chance to go over 250 mph on a daily basis – there’s a bit of giddiness knowing these two superpowers are willing to battle it out.
When Bugatti unveiled the new Veyron Super Sport by announcing it had reclaimed the record as the world’s fastest production vehicle, the former record holder, Shelby Supercars (SSC), welcomed the challenge. Announcing that it would seek to top that record, SSC has also announced it will debut a new car (or at lest a new design) in order to do so.
SSC has now released the first teaser image of the upcoming successor to the Ultimate Aero, designed by none other than Jason Castriota who is known for having penned the famous Pininfarina P4/5 for James Glickenhaus.
Accompanying the photo are the words “The next generation is coming soon…” and, “Because life begins at 250.”
Set to debut in September, we expect the record setting attempt won’t be for quite a while after that, but we’ll be sure to keep on top of this story to see how long the Veyron Super Sport’s record stays intact.
SSC, or Shelby Super Cars, is looking to take back the title of producing the world’s fastest car, after Bugatti recently posted a 267.81 mph time with its new 1,200-hp SuperSport model. In a statement SSC congratulated Bugatti, commenting that, “When the Ultimate Aero broke the record in 2007, we knew it was just a matter of time until it was broken by someone else.”
The upstart American automaker then goes on to announce plans to challenge Bugatti stating that, “We’ve been working on a new project to debut before the end of the summer. Not much can be said at this time except that we’ll be upping the ante on all fronts.
It’s not clear if SSC plans to introduce a new model, or more likely a modified version of the current model. SSC has signed-on Jason Castriota, the man who designed the Pininfarina P4/5, as a new aerodynamic designer.
